Always enjoyed them, haven’t seen them in a while so delighted to spot them again on the alibi channel.

They are true to the books and full of detail and satisfyingly long at about 2.5 hours.

She is my favourite Miss Marple. Probably because she is so familiar as she would have been the one on TV when DM used to watch them when I was younger. I just googled & she died the year I got married.
there is a series I keep spotting when channel hopping at the moment with Geraldine McEwan as MM and I just can’t watch it as she just isn’t my idea of the character at all compared to Joan Hickson.
Glad you are enjoying the series, I will look out for them.

Gliblet · 04/06/2022 18:54

She absolutely nailed the role, even though I like the storylines of some of the Geraldine McEwan and Julia McKenzie episodes Joan Hickson will always be the 'real' Miss Marple for me (see also David Suchet = Poirot 😁)

newtb · 04/06/2022 18:57

Agatha Christie herself wanted Joan Hickson to play thé rôle, but when she was older. Margaret Rutherford was too bombastic, and Géraldine McEwan too wadpish, somehow.
Agree about David Suchet as Poirot.

Wheelyweddingwipedout · 04/06/2022 20:51

Yes absolutely David Suchet as Poirot

I love these Miss Marples because they remain true to the books. It always seems wrong when new adaptations are produced because Agatha Christie truly was a genius that I think can’t be improved upon

I have the box set. They are perfect Sunday afternoon chill viewing. Joan Hicks will always be Miss Marple for me.

EarringsandLipstick · 04/06/2022 20:56

Yes, love Joan Hicks!

ChatterMonkey · 04/06/2022 20:56

Yes!!

As a child my mum had the whole joan hickson series on video, and we used to take turns as a family picking which one to watch. Every single time it was my turn i picked sleeping murder to watch, it was my absolute favourite, but used to cause issues as we had watched it as my last pick, which was probably only a couple of weeks before🤣

Know them all so well, but would re-watch them all now if i had the chance! Are they on any on demand service?

CMOTDibbler · 04/06/2022 20:58

Me too. Joan Hickson captures that unassuming, sharp eyed Miss Marple look perfectly

AnneShirleysNewDress · 04/06/2022 21:04

She's definitely the best although I also like Geraldine McEwan. I couldn't get on with Julia McKenzie though, she was too unmarple.

Joan Hickson 🤦🏻‍♀️

VaddaABeetch · 04/06/2022 21:07

i love Joan Hickson as Miss Marple…the pretending to be a dotty old lady when she has a razor sharp mind.

JohannSebastianBach · 04/06/2022 21:07

@ChatterMonkey Oh yes I loved Sleeping Murder!

Remember it well!

user1474315215 · 04/06/2022 21:10

Joan Hickson is perfect as Miss Marple!

Yes - sleeping murder with Joan Hickson was beautifully done. Properly chilling and I loved how they didn’t cut any detail and allowed it to unfold over 2.5 hours

They are all on britbox. My favourite is Nemesis. The creepy old lady in that is superb (not joan hickson, she is far from creepy). Also love body in the library, 4.50 from.paddington and of course sleeping murder (2nd fave).

Wheelyweddingwipedout · 04/06/2022 21:13

@ChatterMonkey sorry forgot to answer your question. I’ve never found them on streaming service so if anyone knows, please tell us!

We love the David Suchet Poirot series. We watched the Peter Ustinov Death on the Nile today (very star studded) but he just wasn’t Poirot to me.

I remember Joan Hickson as Miss Marple being on tv when I was a child but I haven’t watched them for years. Will have to look out. Thank you.

Wheelyweddingwipedout · 04/06/2022 21:15

Thanks @mogtheexcellent

They’re fab. I had the box set. Joan Hickson is perfect

onemouseplace · 04/06/2022 21:17

Joan Hickson is the definitive Miss Marple for me. Sleeping Murder is one of my favourites as well, but it used to genuinely terrify me when I was younger.

anchorbuttercakes · 04/06/2022 21:17

Me too! Nemesis my fav closely followed by 4.50 from Paddington . Perfect telly

mum2jakie · 04/06/2022 21:21

Alibi is a Freeview channel showing the series regularly. Love Miss Marple and Poirot

Yes looking back im amazed that 6ish yr old me loved it so much 🤣

Although the bit towards the end (i know we all know it but dont want to spoil anything!) I was always too scared to actually watch!

4.50 from paddington was probably my second favourite. And then the one with the typewriter poison pen letters? Cant remember the name of it though!

Wheelyweddingwipedout · 04/06/2022 21:40

@ChatterMonkey the poison pen letters were in ‘the moving finger’
