Always enjoyed them, haven’t seen them in a while so delighted to spot them again on the alibi channel.

They are true to the books and full of detail and satisfyingly long at about 2.5 hours.

Got the Joan Hickson Marple in DVD for my birthday last year! Just love het!!

chocolateoranges33 · 04/06/2022 22:09

I also have the boxset! Joan Hickson is the perfect MM & the title music is so fitting too. I've watched all the other MM adaptations but they don't come close to Joan Hickson!

Smidge001 · 04/06/2022 22:30

She is the best Miss Marple ever Smile

redastherose · 05/06/2022 18:40

Definitely the best Miss Marple she will always be the only one for me to perfectly capture the Miss Marple from the books. I have the full set on DVD my daughters bought it for me and it is a favourite present and frequently rewatched.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 05/06/2022 18:45

Not only is Joan Hickson the perfect Miss Marple, but the sets and costumes are perfect. Even the music and sly drawings are spot on.

I think The Body in the Library is my favourite. I never meet someone called Ruby without hearing Joan Hickson say "Poor Ruby" with a little sigh.

Jackiebrambles · 05/06/2022 19:01

I totally agree. She is Miss Marple! Thanks for the heads up I'll series link on Alibi.

Me too! Nemesis my fav closely followed by 4.50 from Paddington . Perfect telly

Nemesis my favourite too, an acquaintance of mine recently called their daughter the name of one of the main female characters and it's just all I can think of!

Oblomov22 · 05/06/2022 19:07

She is perfect,as the character.

Gliblet · 04/06/2022 18:54

She absolutely nailed the role, even though I like the storylines of some of the Geraldine McEwan and Julia McKenzie episodes Joan Hickson will always be the 'real' Miss Marple for me (see also David Suchet = Poirot 😁)

Spot on.

Yes, the name Verity always strikes me as a sad one because of Nemesis.

I had the great honour and pleasure to meet Joan when they filmed The Moving Finger in the kitchen of my childhood home...

She was exactly as she appears in the programme very smiley and fluffy.. They didn't change much in the kitchen before filming... A different lamp and they put the attempted murder victim in a different cooker to ours. It was on You Tube but can't find it now... Its the scene after Megan finds the body and they are sitting in the kitchen and the scene where the stepfather carries her over his shoulder and put her head in the gas cooker!!

Oblomov22 · 05/06/2022 19:54

Where can I get it now please?
Sky? Netflix? Where?

MarpleFan · 05/06/2022 19:58

As you can tell from my user name - massive fan! I have BritBox almost specifically so I can watch them over and over.

Alibi is a Freeview channel showing the series regularly. Love Miss Marple and Poirot

Alibi is a paid for channel available on Sky or Virgin.

Drama channel sometimes shows them (ch 20 freeview). It used to be called alibi or connected to the alibi channel in some way 10 years ago.

What a fantastic claim to fame! I want to watch now....

CrossPurposes · 05/06/2022 21:07

The versions shown on Drama (I'm guessing the same for Alibi too) are cut for the time slot (eg Nemesis was missing a lot set on the coach) so I do recommend Britbox.

Oh thank you for sharing that honour @Elderflower14 . I’m so happy for you that you met her.

You’re right @CrossPurposes it sucks!

@Elderflower14 that is so cool!

There is only one Miss Marple ❤️
I too have the boxset DVDs, fond memories from watching the films in my childhood. There’s a Facebook group dedicated to Joan Hickson as the best Marple ❤️

TheOGCCL · 05/06/2022 22:01

Another one with the boxset, it's in a pretend book and I have to keep something to watch them on!

Joan Hickson is Miss Marple so much more than any of the others. It's like Agatha had her in mind. Pretty dismayed by the ITV series. Kind of jokey and full of celebrity cameos. The BBC series is just so beautifully done, costumes, direction, perfect theme tune, a real air of menace and they go on for hours - think originally broadcast as a series. Can't date either as already in the past.

Pricklesinperil · 05/06/2022 22:15

What pp’s said about Joan being Agatha Christie’s choice is spot on. The below taken from Joan’s obituary in The Independent:

In 1946, Agatha Christie had written the actress a letter after seeing her during a West End production of Appointment with Fear in which Hickson acted the part of "a little spinster lady, saying, "I hope that one day you will play my dear Miss Marple." Her wish was not carried out for another 38 years.

Oblomov22 · 06/06/2022 21:22

Thank you all. I have just gone onto sky alibi 109, and it has 3 series to download. I'm thrilled.
