Always enjoyed them, haven’t seen them in a while so delighted to spot them again on the alibi channel.

They are true to the books and full of detail and satisfyingly long at about 2.5 hours.

Enjoy @Oblomov22 !

The ITV version is dreadful with extra characters, confusing plots and completely different murderers. The least unchanged is the 4.50 from Paddington I think but even then they included a sex assault scene Hmm To be fair I didn't watch them all, gave up after they started inserted miss Marple everywhere and made Tuppence an alcoholic.

I met Joan Hickson sometimes. She used to do the flowers in my friends church. She was a formidable person, rather more forceful than the Marple character but very dignified.

interestingly she had quite riotous life as a young actress. She shared a flat with Elizabeth David, the cookery writer.

Not only is Joan Hickson the perfect Miss Marple, but the sets and costumes are perfect. Even the music and sly drawings are spot on.

And the casting. Whenever I read the books now, I always see and hear the actors who played the parts. Dolly Bantry will forever sound like Gwen Watford in my head.

The books do provide terrific roles for actors of all ages.

The costumes are awesome. I sometimes wish we all dressed like they did in the 1950s with tea dresses and makeup on even if you are just staying in, and the men always in suits. And the impeccable manners (murder aside which is obviously rude). It’s all very soothing.

Oblomov22 · 07/06/2022 21:41

I agree, everything is perfect, the costumes, the casting, everything.

It's like Anne of Green Gables, casting, everything. Just perfect.

I thought I was the only one that thought this 😀

I've found it!!!!
HERE approx 13 mins in, 45 mins in and 48 mins in!!

Biscuitsareme · 09/06/2022 18:42

Agree, she's the perfect miss Marple. My favourite episode is A Murder is Announced, with so many great female roles. Samantha Bond is in it too iirc.

Just rewatched Nemesis on the back of this thread.

Liz frazer was amazing as nora brents mother. Very short but powerful performance.

MissMarpleRocks · 11/06/2022 21:15

Did someone call? No other Marple will do.

My favourite is A Caribbean Mystery “mind like a bacon slicer” love that line.

The whole series is like a comfort blanket even if it’s a murderous one 😂

I've had the box set for years but if they every come on TV I have to watch them - I have Britbox too.

I like all of them - Betram's Hotel, 4.50 from Paddington, The mirror cracked, Body in the Library, but my least favourite was They Do It with Mirrors.

Which episode is it where it ends with her saying "More tea vicar?" Grin

Is that The Body in the Library?

I can't remember - will have to dig out my dvds when I get time.

It’s at the end of ‘The mirror cracked’ isn’t it?

i watched the filming of Nemesis when I was in London . Still remember it.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 12/06/2022 16:36

I love them too. Joan Hickson is so slight and wrinkly, like a little mouse in her sensible cardigans and tweed skirts. And everything looks slightly drab. And there's a great air of menace. Fabulous theme tune too. I always found the accompanying illustrations quite creepy with the two sneering women outside a shop, and the glamourous woman staring out her bedroom window.

mogtheexcellent · 12/06/2022 21:23

The artist who did the drawings in the opening credits died a year or so ago. His daughter posted it on twitter.

There was a lot of love for the pictures until then i thought i was the only one.

Wheelyweddingwipedout · 22/06/2022 03:40

Joan Hickson narrating this book is sheer perfection The thirteen problems

Joan Hickson was Miss Marple and none of the other very good actors who played the part could hold a candle to her. In fact I think they were very brave to take the role on.

Wandawhochanged · 23/06/2022 12:50

Not a purist and liked the Julia McKensy ones for their own sake.

Was Nemesis a bit too involved with the coach courier imitating an air stewardess?

riotlady · 23/06/2022 13:58

Joan Hickson was the best Miss Marple! I used to love watching them at my grandmas when I was off school poorly.

I didn’t like Geraldine Mcewan at all but Julia Mckenzie was ok.
