I can't see another thread.
I've watched 3 episodes, very enjoyable, quite slow, love the music.

God I’m on episode 5 as I keep thinking ‘this has got to get better’. It’s SO dull and the characters are so unlikeable and boring.
Please tell me there’s an exciting twist coming up!

You think the twist in The Usual Suspects and The sixth sense were good, well you ain't seen nothing yet!

(I may be lying)

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 23/05/2022 22:12

😂

NovelFarmer · 24/05/2022 03:55

I thought the show was simply perfect.
I absolutely love Frances and Bobbi (and the actresses who play them).
Now that I’ve finished the series I’m genuinely gutted, nothing else I watch will be this exquisite.

PartyPlan · 24/05/2022 04:22

I loathed Frances and Bobbi. So pleased someone liked them! 😂

NeverTalksToStrangers · 24/05/2022 04:41

I think Joe Alwyn is great in it actually, that is how rich people from dublin often talk. He's definitely a bit too young looking though, despite being a similar age. He has a very boyish face but he's playing him the way he's written. I'm not sure I like the girl playing Francis. It's maybe just my age but i hate the styling. I get that a lot of younger people dress in that kinda frumpy way now though. I've seen her dressed immaculately some of the promotional interviews etc and she looks incredible.

The book is awkward and slow, not much happens and the characters are quite unlikable. That's kinda Sally Rooney's thing. I'm still enjoying it though.

Sparklingbrook · 24/05/2022 07:08

I thought Joe Alwyn was fine in it but people are moaning he's too old and bitching about the accent.
I hated the way Frances was 'styled' but I'm not a fan of those trousers that are a weird length. Grin

There was a gushy live chat on Instagram between Daisy Edgar Jones, Alison Oliver and Sasha Lane yesterday. I haven't seen all of it.

Watapalava · 24/05/2022 07:11

Seen it all and it was ok

agree characters not likeable

it seemed a cheap win really coming in the back of normal people but that was refreshing whereas this feels like a copy of the same thing

I agree that in parts it was just Normal People in feel and mood. I wonder how the viewing figures are comparing?
At this point 2 weeks after Normal People was aired the paps were chasing Paul Mescal around while he was jogging and going to the shops, and the world had gone wild over 'Connell's chain'.

There's media interest in this too but a lot of that is curiosity around Joe (and Taylor). This is his first big publicity lead role.

I'm enjoying it but i knew what to expect and knew it would be slow. I think part of the problem with it is that it's just not a very likely story. Affairs happen but rarely this way. Famous female writers don't pick up stray 21 year old 'spoken word' performers in bars and invite them into their homes. On top of this, the characters don't look like they'd be together.

Whilst parts of normal people made me roll my eyes, it was slightly more believable (even if I wouldn't call the characters normal).

Sparklingbrook · 24/05/2022 08:09

NP had me rolling my eyes and yelling at the screen at all the 'well that would never happen' moments, but I guess it's called 'fiction' for a reason and i'm like that with a lot of films. Grin

DoubleCarbs4Life · 24/05/2022 09:11

Episode 7 and I’m determined to get to the end, but I can’t work out if this is genuinely shit or I’m just not the target audience.

I find the acting atrocious. Joe A is particularly wooden. And the dialogue is ultra cringey at times. And the characters are just so fucking annoying! Grrr…😆

But ultimately I’m just not interested in self absorbed, uni student relationship BS, so the whole premise is wrong for me and I’m probably too old for this.

Full disclosure - I didnt enjoy Normal People either. But I’ve not read any Sally Rooney, so maybe all these angsty sexual relationships play out better in writing. They don’t make good telly, that’s for sure.

NovelFarmer · 24/05/2022 22:55

I liked Frances’ styling. I liked that she was not overtly beautiful but as the series goes on it becomes apparent.

Normal People was hard to watch because of some of the sex scenes. I found them disturbing.

NovelFarmer · 24/05/2022 22:57

And I think Frances doesn’t make too much of an effort with her appearance because she thinks what’s the point. She doesn’t see that’s she’s beautiful.

BundtCake · 25/05/2022 14:13

I’m so confused. I’m watching but nothing is happening???

ForAFriend123 · 25/05/2022 14:27

Well that's a good few hours I'll never get back.
Dull storyline, unlikable, narcissistic characters.

Shame as quite enjoyed NP

The sex scenes in NP were awful! I'm relieved they have glossed over them in CWF.

DoubleCarbs4Life · 25/05/2022 17:56

I got to the end. It was dire.

In my defence I’ve been off sick for a few days and was very bored.

Howeverdoyouneedme · 26/05/2022 21:59

Just finished it. I liked it. I like the slow, almost dreary, dreamy nature of it.

I preferred CWF to NP as a book actually.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 27/05/2022 00:14

Just noticed there's a discussion group programme about CWF where they dissect the programme. I might watch it for the laugh as I'm not convinced there's much to discuss apart from the dire ending!

darisdet · 27/05/2022 01:10

On the other thread (TV prog) think I said that I wondered why they appeared to have started Conversations at a different time point to the book and radio play. Of course I'd mixed it up with Beautiful People. I think there are some similarities.

I started listening to the podcast on Sounds. Didn't finish the first episode.

darisdet · 27/05/2022 01:13

The other thread was put in AIBU - to think that Sally Rooney and her mates must be bloody boring company.

Too true!

AuntTwacky · 27/05/2022 01:18

I've watched it all but didn't enjoy. They really stretched it out to 12 eps and literally nothing really happened. Couldn't stand Joe A he didn't suit the part at all. How many times did Frances get asked if she's ok?!

Sparklingbrook · 27/05/2022 06:48

I felt that with both NP and CWF that 12 episodes was a bit much. Six hours of not a lot happening and then a 'guess the ending' for yourself both times.

In what way? Iirc it's one of the reasons I liked it as it was a bit more normal than Hollywood swinging from the chandeliers .
