I should say its a sobering thought that they are going home to fight

dropthevipers · 15/05/2022 00:24

Thanks everyone for a blessed break from fucking gender woo woo.

Peregrina · 15/05/2022 00:24

It would only have been 39 countries voting for Ukraine, because you can't vote for your own country - so if they did get 460 points they got 12 from 38 countries and points from the 39th.

Ukraine may have peace. They may host it. The winners may not live to perform next year.

Well done UK. Such a good song and so well performed.

RishiRich · 15/05/2022 00:25

I voted for Ukraine, Greece and Estonia. I'm glad Spain didn't win. As amazing as their bums are, it would've felt like pervy men deciding it.

I'm very pleased that Ukraine won and that the UK did so well. 🇺🇦🇬🇧

MrsJackGrealish · 15/05/2022 00:25

I've realised Belarus were absent. Didnt know they got a 3 year ban.

Selkiesarereal · 15/05/2022 00:25

Eurovision has always been political and tonight it was for the right reason, as Europe sent a message to the Ukrainian’s that we are supporting you and that is much more important than winning. Plus, I liked their song!

IQuiteLikeCricket · 15/05/2022 00:25

Even if it wasn't just for the song, I don't think it was about pity or sympathy, but about support for Ukraine and showing them the whole of Europe, and beyond, is standing behind them. That's a wonderful thing.

The UK coming second to that is fabulous. Sam did good. I was thrilled with the first 4pts, coming second was unthinkable earlier tonight.

KimikosNightmare · 15/05/2022 00:26

TooBigForMyBoots · 15/05/2022 00:13

Ukraine didnt get a sympathy or pity vote.Hmm They got the love and support vote.💞💞💞

Brilliant result tonight. Eurovision doing what it does best.😁😁😁❤

Well said.

RishiRich · 15/05/2022 00:26

KimikosNightmare · 15/05/2022 00:22

No we absolutely did not lose to a sympathy vote. We won a show of European solidarity.

Quite. It's a good thing.

Bythehairywartsonmywitchychin · 15/05/2022 00:26

Come on. Everyone with an ounce of common sense knows it’s more than a singing contest and a bit of fun. It’s the same every year, songs are decent and some are a pile of shite, but some get better votes even though they are shite due to political shite.

cynicbuthappy · 15/05/2022 00:26

Ukraine won the public vote because the public showed their support to a country under attack. This is completely understandable and I’m really happy that we came second.
It’s also important to note that the winners will be on the frontline by Monday. They may not survive.

IdisagreeMrHochhauser · 15/05/2022 00:26

BBC News saying voting irregularities being investigated. Wonder if that's telephone systems being jammed?

DyingForACuppa · 15/05/2022 00:26

Proud of my fellow UK citizens for giving Ukraine the 12.

Impressed we did so well.

Amused by the moaning that it's all 'political', any time you ask people to vote they will make their own choices for their own reasons.

Portugal giving Spain 12pts then Spain not reciprocating? 😀

Normando91 · 15/05/2022 00:27

RedToothBrush · 15/05/2022 00:10

I don't buy that.

If there hadn't been the Ukraine thing and they got lots of votes out of sympathy, if there hadn't been a war where would the points for them have gone?

Its not as simple as just saying that it cost us.

Exactly this. We only got 100 odd votes in the public voting. Spain or Sweden could have easily beaten us.

That being said. I’m absolutely buzzing with the entire night and the results. Ukraine deserved it- and not just because of what is happening, their song was genuinely brilliant! Second place is the best result we could have hoped for and Sam should be so damn proud, he is an incredible talent and I can’t wait to see where he goes from here!

LAHallucinations · 15/05/2022 00:29

We'll never know who would have won in normal circumstances, so can we not call the UK the 'real winners'. We only beat Spain by seven points and Sweden by 28 points. Redistribute Ukraine's 631 points and the outcome could have been very different.

Ukraine and the UK in the top two (in whichever order) was the dream outcome for me, so I'm very happy tonight!

ImJustMadAboutSaffron · 15/05/2022 00:29

ChloeHel · 15/05/2022 00:20

I’m going to say it we all know Ukraine didn’t win based on their song…even the crowd look subdued. Disappointing. But well done Sam Ryder - you would have one in other circumstances. We will probably never come that close ever again 😂

All in all I found this Eurovision to be one of the most boring ones I’ve watched in the last 15 years. They really, really need to sort out the voting system, most of my party were asleep on the sofa halfway through! It’s much too long!

Seen on Twitter "it's like coming second to Lia Thomas in a female swimming gala". Now deleted and probably rightly so.

NotQuiteUsual · 15/05/2022 00:30

So we won the judges vote and overall came second after Ukraine. Fucking result or what? Absolutely buzzing.

AngeloMysterioso · 15/05/2022 00:30

Oscarthedog · 15/05/2022 00:11

Every year we get nul points and we people accuse us of sending a crap song. Today's vote shows that it was always political. And I'm sure Vlad doesn't give a crap that Ukraine won so not sure what the vote was supposed to achieve.

Both things are true. It is political and we usually enter a crap song. Personally I agree that the whole reason the contest was started was to encourage unity and togetherness in Europe and celebrate music, and that’s exactly what was achieved tonight. I’m chuffed to bits that Ukraine won it, and chuffed to bits that we came 2nd

AbleCable · 15/05/2022 00:31

scruffanddodge · 15/05/2022 00:16

The public vote is their top 10 songs which are awarded points 1-8, 10 and 12.

if 40 countries voted their top song as Ukraine the max they could have been awarded is 480 points. They got 460 or so which means every county pretty much gave them 12 points.

A country can't vote for itself, so I think the max achievable is 39x12 - 468.
Which makes their getting 460 even more amazing!! A unity vote if ever there was one!!

DressingGownofDoom · 15/05/2022 00:31

JackieWeaver101 · 15/05/2022 00:15

I think Australia was the only country not to vote for the UK.

At least, the UK received 12 points from Germany and France.

And from Ukraine, which is nice. It's all good in Eurovision land.

MissDollyMix · 15/05/2022 00:32

Really pleased for Ukraine. Sam Ryder did an excellent job for the U.K. Very good all round. I really hope that we will be watching Eurovision from Kiev next year.
