Hearing it (for the first time) I actually really like the Ukrainian entry!

ObjectionHearsay · 15/05/2022 00:16

So chuffed for us, left hand side of the board, but not just, that second place!!!

Well done to Ukraine. Wonder who they will nominate to host.

BBC budget man still shitting himself hoping Zelensky isn't dialing BoJo right now 🤣

That's one expensive light bill lol

scruffanddodge · 15/05/2022 00:16

The public vote is their top 10 songs which are awarded points 1-8, 10 and 12.

if 40 countries voted their top song as Ukraine the max they could have been awarded is 480 points. They got 460 or so which means every county pretty much gave them 12 points.

We all know Ukraine have done so well because of the war. It would have been nice if all the songs could get votes on merit not sympsthy. Otherwise what's the point?

Oh fgs, this year is an exception. The Ukrainian song probably deserved a middle to upper ranking on merit but if Europe and European ideals count for anything their win is deserved.

ChitChatChatter · 15/05/2022 00:17

Funny how we go from 'we'd be so happy to get anything more than nul points' to 'we came second and we wuz robbed!!!

It's a song contes but it's been political since time immemorial. At least it's been used constructively this time, to show support for Ukraine. Be happy that you have the luxury of sitting comfortably at home and happily whingeing about how unfair it all is. Things could be worse.

It's almost certainly going to be us.

Thank you @RedToothBrush for the thread. Missed the entire show save for the scores and still enjoyed the thread! 🏆

Thanks. That’s an incredible show of support for Ukraine across Europe.

Ukraine didnt get a sympathy or pity vote.Hmm They got the love and support vote.💞💞💞

Brilliant result tonight. Eurovision doing what it does best.😁😁😁❤

I agree it was the unity vote

minou123 · 15/05/2022 00:19

Can I just say, before I collapse in bed, thank you for the 3 brilliant threads.

As always MN posters are brilliant, funny and clever. You've been brilliant to chat to tonight.

Unmumsnetty hugs all round 🤗

Calafsidentity · 15/05/2022 00:20

Great result and maybe UK will end up hosting if Ukraine can't, but let's hope circumstances change, the war is over, and they can!

BobbinHood · 15/05/2022 00:20

The Ukrainian song was better on the second listen! Would have been a PR disaster to have been the ones to have pipped Ukraine to the post anyway.

RedToothBrush · 15/05/2022 00:20

Jellykat · 15/05/2022 00:15

'I'll always find my way home, even if all roads are destroyed'
I read the song was written before the war started.. if so, thats some weird shit.

Not really.

There has been a dispute over parts of the Donbas since 2014. There had been an ongoing conflict.

I’m going to say it we all know Ukraine didn’t win based on their song…even the crowd look subdued. Disappointing. But well done Sam Ryder - you would have one in other circumstances. We will probably never come that close ever again 😂

All in all I found this Eurovision to be one of the most boring ones I’ve watched in the last 15 years. They really, really need to sort out the voting system, most of my party were asleep on the sofa halfway through! It’s much too long!

Katya213 · 15/05/2022 00:21

I’m really happy and proud of the result! 1st and 2nd..amazing!!

NotMushroomInEre · 15/05/2022 00:21

@ChitChatChatter spot on

Binglebong · 15/05/2022 00:21

There were a couple didn't give us any point, but not many.

What has Serbia done? Don't want to disrupt a happy thread but Ukraine has been taking up the news so very missed it.

JaninaDuszejko · 15/05/2022 00:21

That was the perfect outcome wasn't it. Ukraine winning and we came second. So poignant to think the Kalush Orchestra will now be going home to fight. Assume we'll be hosting next year.

CrunchyCarrot · 15/05/2022 00:21

Second is the new first! I'm so pleased for the UK, Sam did us proud.

Yes, thanks so much everyone for making this thread so enjoyable!

Antarcticant · 15/05/2022 00:21

The European show of solidarity for Ukraine is more important than the kudos of winning.

And no one can say how the voting would have gone if, for example, Ukraine hadn't entered - those 400+ public votes they got could've gone anywhere. We were only a few points above Spain and Sweden - if Ukraine's votes had been spread amongst the other entrants, we mightn't even have been second.

SoggyPaper · 15/05/2022 00:21

I suspect we will be hosting it next year too. That would make sense.

I don’t think anyone genuinely thinks ‘we woz robbed’. Ukraine winning was a foregone conclusion (for all the right reasons). Having come 2nd is an incredible result for the uk.

Binglebong · 15/05/2022 00:22

I really hope Ukraine feels the love.

ChloeHel · 15/05/2022 00:22

*won

I am that tired I can’t even spell correctly 😂

KimikosNightmare · 15/05/2022 00:22

Shmithecat2 · 15/05/2022 00:06

I'm pleased for Ukraine BUT annoyed at the same time. We won in reality, lost to a sympathy vote.

No we absolutely did not lose to a sympathy vote. We won a show of European solidarity.

Its a sobering thought isnt it?
