Sewing Bee, Bake off, Pottery Throwdown, Interior Design Masters, Masterchef... What's your 'skillful competition' show of choice?

As above really!

I like them all although don't watch Pottery Throwdown as much anymore. Love Masterchef but I think the best programme is probably Sewing Bee. I'm not sure why, it just always seems to capture something really special about the contestants.

What's your favourite, and why? Oh I don't sew, throw pots, design or cook/bake much. Are you influenced by actually sharing the relevant skills?

I like ones where you think 'oh aren't they clever and I wish I could do that.'

So sewing bee and bake off and pottery.

Masterchef does nothing for me, the jewelry one was OK, the current dollshouse one I just think 'wh?y' and the woodworking one was just too big.

TokyoSushi · 29/04/2022 14:47

Sewing Bee, Bake Off & Pottery Showdown for me, I absolutely love them all.

I really don't like cooking programmes though (I know Bake Off kind of is) so not Masterchef, Great British Menu or anything like that.

I suppose I'd say my genre is twee! I'd love to Bake, Sew, do Pottery etc, but quite frankly, I'm too lazy!

BlueRaincoat1 · 29/04/2022 14:53

Great British Menu is awful! I used to like it, just in the early days. But any time I dip into it now it seems terrible. I think the quality of contestant isnt very high...

Didn't get on with the miniatures one, I didn't agree with the judges. Woodworking a bit dull and the flower one I lasted one episode. Not in to make up so didn't bother with that one.
We love pottery throw down (though loved the temporary host much more than McSweeney and don't know why they didn't let her finish the last series out). Sewing Bee we love too snd glad they have a new host.
Our favourite is probably Masterchef, though we always wish we could taste the food! and we really got into Masterchef Australia which seemed to have a gazillion episodes. The American version is awful though. Bake off also great and think all the hosts have been far better than Sue and Mel ever were.

TeenPlusCat · 29/04/2022 14:55

We enjoyed the Australia Legomasters too, but not the American version.

BlueRaincoat1 · 29/04/2022 15:04

Miniatures, woodworking and floristry ones have all passed me by somehow, I don't know them...

Is there a painting competion show? I remember seeing one hosted by Mariella Fostrup a few years ago I think, but haven't seen anything recently.

I love Sewing Bee and the Throwdown. Don't mind Bake Off although I think it's past its best. Quite liked the jewellery one.

Can live without the rest.

NormalForNuneaton · 29/04/2022 20:59

I'm bored of the cookery ones like Masterchef now, although I'll watch Bake Off if it's on.

I love Patrick Grant Sewing Bee and Pottery Throwdown so watch those every episode. I think it's because I'd love to be good at sewing and pottery.

DP liked the woodwork one.

ToffeeNotCoffee · 29/04/2022 21:03

I'm surprised I like sewing bee so much. Same for pottery throw down. Love Repair Shop.

Masterchef has gone stale and I'm losing interest in Bake Off.

I didn't get into the miniatures programme or the jewellery or wood work.

BlueRaincoat1 · 29/04/2022 21:39

Sewing Bee and Pottery Throwdown seem to be the most popular so far...
Sewing Bee is lovely, and I'm enjoying Sarah Pascoe as the new presenter, she was quite funny and warm.

Sewing Bee - it's just such a lovely calming programme to me. Plus I love sewing although I don't have time to do much. If I had no job i could happily spend all my time sewing.

JasperJohnsPaintbrush · 29/04/2022 21:48

Junior bakeoff is delightful and has some wonderful contestants, who's skills make me want to hide behind a cushion due to the fact that my highest ever success has been a victoria sponge.
Love pottery throwdown too as I love dibbling in the old clay myself, and portrait artist of the year is another favourite.

Talented people everywhere!!

TheDogsMother · 29/04/2022 21:48

Love Masterchef, Sewing Bee and Bake Off. I can't really get into Throw Down. It's a little different in format as there is obviously the firing time but it's the main man's weeping which puts me off.

SilverGlassHare · 29/04/2022 21:49

Sewing Bee, and Pottery Throwdown (though I liked that better when it was on BBC as they did three challenges because they didn’t need to leave space for ads). I love Bake Off too but it’s getting a bit samey.

I liked the jewellery one but the host was embarrassing. There’s a chocolate/dessert one on Netflix that I enjoyed because the format was much more cooperative but the stakes were higher - the winner got a scholarship or something, but no-one was eliminated until the end. I had great hopes of the woodwork one but was a bit disappointed as I didn’t really like any of the things they made.

Basically, I need to be able to covet whatever they’re making for it to be really entertaining.

strelitzialady · 29/04/2022 21:59

I love Glow Up, although not really interested in make up generally!

Hollytreenew · 29/04/2022 22:05

I like Bake off, throw down, sewing bee and glow up. Just started watching the miniatures one (great big tiny design challenge, something along those lines) and it is quite good, not as good as the others but still entertaining. I also like design masters and I did enjoy the jewellery one.

Just looked at the list and realised that I like a lot of them! Although I don’t really watch the food ones. Used to Masterched years ago sporadically and another cooking one but don’t really now. I agree with an above poster about wanting to eat the food!

BlueRaincoat1 · 29/04/2022 22:07

I might try Glow Up, I'm not fussed about make up so thought it wouldn't be for me.

Love Pottery Throwdown. Love Sewing Bee. Still hanging in with GBBO but don’t like it as much now.

I am here to recommend to you: The American Barbecue Showdown (on Netflix). We watched it and loved it. ‘You don’t need no teeth to eat this beef’.

Hollytreenew · 29/04/2022 22:12

@BlueRaincoat1 I’m not into make up and don’t really wear it but I really enjoyed Glow up. Might as well give it a go! The people on there are very skilled are create lots of different looks, that is what amazed me.

strelitzialady · 29/04/2022 22:13

Glow Up is a mix of regular make up and special effects/artistry.

particularly recommend season 2 when Ophelia Liu won it - she was so good!

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 29/04/2022 22:15

I like sewing bee, glow up, bake off and interior design masters. Also Lego ones, all of them. I absolutely love the jewellery one because it's so fascinating to see how they actually make jewellery and mind blowing to my tiny mind that people can actually make this stuff.

DramaAlpaca · 29/04/2022 22:30

I love them all!

greyinganddecaying · 29/04/2022 22:38

My favourite is "Is It Cake?"

It's genius

😂 Spoiler alert much?! (I've seen it so it just made me laugh!)

I love throw down, bee and glow up despite not having a love of make up.

I don't like the cookery ones. Busman's holiday- I'm a chef.
