Sewing Bee, Bake off, Pottery Throwdown, Interior Design Masters, Masterchef... What's your 'skillful competition' show of choice?

As above really!

I like them all although don't watch Pottery Throwdown as much anymore. Love Masterchef but I think the best programme is probably Sewing Bee. I'm not sure why, it just always seems to capture something really special about the contestants.

What's your favourite, and why? Oh I don't sew, throw pots, design or cook/bake much. Are you influenced by actually sharing the relevant skills?

Oh I love the interiors ones too. Just like I used to love Changing Rooms back in the day

SBAM · 29/04/2022 22:56

I love sewing bee (maybe because I sew? I find it a good way of participating in my hobby when I don’t have the space or mental energy to sew myself.) and repair shop because I’m in awe of their talents.
i used to love bake off but it got a bit same-y and I didn’t watch when it left the bbc.
the woodwork one I got bored after a few episodes. I find master chef too fussy, plus I think it’s harder to judge food on just it’s appearance.

FuzzyPuffling · 30/04/2022 07:41

I love Sewing Bee and Throw Down and have quite got into the miniatures one. I have no interest in cooking, but enjoy Bake Off.

I think it's to do with the quality and personality of the judges, so Keith and Rich, Prue and Paul and Esme and Patrick are all fab. However, the jewellery one ( which I wanted to love) and more especially the woodwork one were blighted for me by snarky, rather mean judges.

lugeforlife · 30/04/2022 07:48

I watch with dds who are early teens so it's a bit of a nice bonding thing.

Bake off - old fav
Interior design masters - we like but get a bit bored. I often fall asleep tbh and dd1 wakes me up for the judging
Sewing bee - love! Dd2 especially
Throw down - dd1 not a fan and we do get annoyed with keef crying.

Repair shop - dd2 and dh enjoy but we don't watch regularly
Glow up - dd1 is entranced. I enjoy dd2 no
Jewellery one - do enjoy but don't like presenter who I can't remember

Limer · 30/04/2022 07:48

I love all of them, but Sky Arts Portrait Artist of the Year and Landscape Artist of the Year both have me watching in jaw-dropping astonishment at the talent of the competitors. The judges are wonderful too.

IDontDrinkTea · 30/04/2022 07:48

I love the sewing bee and pottery throw down. Used to be a big bake off fan but have gone off it in recent years. I do still enjoy Glow Up, but it’s more like face paint than makeup a lot of the time.

Watched the woodwork and didn’t quite get into it like I thought I would. Katherine Ryan was a bit too much of a host for the jewellery one. I also quite enjoy legomasters

Reading this back it’s quite remarkable how much I’ve watched 😂

lugeforlife · 30/04/2022 07:52

Katherine Ryan! I find her a bit arch and snidey.

I like it when my presenters and judges bond and support. Esme and Patrick and Michelle from idm are my favourites.

Didn't get on with the miniatures one, I didn't agree with the judges. Woodworking a bit dull and the flower one I lasted one episode. Not in to make up so didn't bother with that one.
We love pottery throw down (though loved the temporary host much more than McSweeney and don't know why they didn't let her finish the last series out). Sewing Bee we love too snd glad they have a new host.
Our favourite is probably Masterchef, though we always wish we could taste the food! and we really got into Masterchef Australia which seemed to have a gazillion episodes. The American version is awful though. Bake off also great and think all the hosts have been far better than Sue and Mel ever were.

I'm not into makeup at all and never wear it but I love glow up. I think it's because it's not just plain makeup - in someways it's more like creating artwork using a face as a canvas.

FeltCarrot · 30/04/2022 08:06

I just love anything where people make things, makes me think I have a chance of doing the same! 😀
Sewing Bee…I can make my own designer wardrobe
interior Design Masters…I can completely renovate my house
Great Big Tiny Design Challenge…I will get dd’s dolls house out of the loft
Repair Shop…if only I’d kept that broken plate/clock/headless doll, I could fix it.

squashyhat · 01/05/2022 10:58

There is an American series on Netflix about glassblowing called Blown Away. Some of the contestants are annoying but it's fascinating to watch.

Chiefofstaff · 01/05/2022 13:27

The only one I couldn’t get into was the jewellery one and I’m totally bored with Masterchefand don’t watch anymore and am heading that way with Bake off, but I love the rest - especially Sewing Bee, Making The Cut, Next in Fashion, Glow Up and Pottery. I’m absolutely hopeless at anything involving artistry or craft skills but really enjoy watching others creating amazing things. I’m not sold on the Miniatures but finding it watchable.

This!

Stichintime · 02/05/2022 00:53

Love Glow up, The Drop and Sewing bee. Also liked the jewellery one. Never watch the cooking ones and wanted to like the miniatures one, but couldn't get into it. It just seemed so dull.

negomi90 · 02/05/2022 01:18

Blown away because its cool.
Sewing bee, because its both obtainable and not obtainable - but its the only hobby of the lot I actually do in real life.

RubaiyatOfAnyone · 02/05/2022 01:36

Just binged all of old Project Runway on youtube.

completely different vibe to sewing bee but compulsive viewing and in many cases SO talented.

Punkypinky · 02/05/2022 01:53

Another vote for the sky arts portrait artist/ landscape artist/ photographer of the year shows.

Used to love project runway.

Also not sure if robot wars counts but I find it fascinating how they engineer the robots and then I feel quite emotional sometimes watching them get mullered.

LocalHobo · 02/05/2022 02:05

My favourites are My Kitchen Rules Australia and Professional Bake Off.

happygolurkey · 02/05/2022 20:47

Sewing Bee and Pottery Throwdown. I feel like you genuinely get a chance to learn about different techniques/skills on those two and you actually get to see what they're doing. I was looking forward to the woodwork one but I only watched one episode. It was really disappointing. They hardly showed you the participants working on the pieces or explained much of what they were doing.

i've never watched any of the cookery ones. they just don't appeal

buzzy1 · 02/05/2022 23:14

Next in Fashion was enjoyable, although there’s only been one series on Netflix. Love pottery throw down and interior design but need to fast forward the boring bits.

RoyKentsChestHair · 02/05/2022 23:22

BlueRaincoat1 · 29/04/2022 22:07

I might try Glow Up, I'm not fussed about make up so thought it wouldn't be for me.

I’m not into make up either but a lot of the challenges are more like art painted onto a face than general make up as such, so you don’t really need to be into make up to enjoy it. I’ve watched all the UK series and just started the Irish series.

I watch all of them, I love baking so they’re always good, and I’m enjoying the Great Big Tiny Design challenge at the moment on Channel 4, making dolls house interiors. It’s inspired me to have a go at one myself.

My fave of all though is Portrait Artist of the Year. I’m an artist and love painting portraits but struggle to get the likeness all the time, so it’s quite heartening to see how many other artists struggle with it too, and to see that the judges don’t necessarily go for the one that is the best likeness, especially if it’s been done using an iPad etc rather than from life.

RoyKentsChestHair · 02/05/2022 23:24

Also loved Blown Away, the glass one and Forged in Fire, same format as Bake Off etc but with swords and knives!

TheSillyMastiff · 02/05/2022 23:32

Forged in Fire is mine. Absolutely love it, not only do you get to watch them make a bladed weapon, you then get to watch it be put to the test and destroyed 🤣

Also....the presenter is easy on the eye in my opinion 😳😏

Nat6999 · 02/05/2022 23:44

I like portrait artist, Watercolour Challenge, Sewing Bee & Lego Masters.

YilingMatriarch · 03/05/2022 02:40

TGB Pottery Challenge & Sewing Bee are my current favourites. They still retain the charm of GBBO pre jumping the shark in Season 7 (Candace), after Nadiya's season GBBO became a bit too aware of itself for my taste. I still watch, but more out of habit than any investment.

I was one of the few that adored the Big Allotment Challenge 2014/15 it was niche enough to have hobbyists and not necessarily wannabe stars. I think if it had of been made either earlier to crest the GBBO initial wave or pre/post lockdown it might have faired better. Jim Buttress was a cuddly curmudgeon who knew his tomatoes, but Thane Prince was very Marmite.

I like MasterChef the Professionals, but Greta British Menu has been in steady decline since Prue left, and has Jumped the Shark this season becoming almost a shade of its former self. Chefs seem underwhelming (except Wales), and some Judges seem to actively dislike others. Shame really.

BlueRaincoat1 · 03/05/2022 12:42

I wish I had Sky to watch Portrait/Landscape artist if the year, I saw a few episodes at my mums house a couple of years ago and loved it. I don't think there's an equivalent outside of Sky which is a shame.

Will definitely give Glow Up a go, might also have a look at Project Runway.
