Anyone watching/watched Top Boy on Netflix?

It's a bit bleak/depressing/violent at times due to the subject matter (East London drug trade), but I love the characters, especially Jaq and Sully. The acting and story lines are superb.

I know it's a totally different genre, but it leaves Bridgeton dead in the water IMHO.

Anyone else?

Btw I saw Ashleigh Walters jogging up a hill during lockdown and I must have done a middle aged fan girl double-take as he gave me a little nod and I’m still dining out on it on an anonymous forum 2 years later! BlushBlushGrin

I've watched them all again in order and it's just the best series.

In total agreement about the series's building in terms of plot and richness of character.

Rewatching the first 2 series's, I'd forgotten so much of the brutality of Sully, Dushane and Dris. And the end of series 4 was a real shock!

So I started reading this thread after watching Sunmerhouse 1 and 2 and had just began Top Boy 1/3…. Thank God I stopped before reading that Sully’s boy died. I was SO sad for him!
My favourite scene of all was in Summerhouse 2 I think, when Sully barges into Jason’s house and beats up his horrible step-dad and Sully shouts at his boy’s Mum “I won’t tell you again, look after your boy!”

MissClementine · 05/05/2022 00:51

I have rewatched all 4 seasons again because it is just so good and it had been a long time since I watched Summerhouse.

Kano is fantastic, his acting is brilliant. They are all great but he really stands out, and so good looking!

Do you think he will go and find Delphine in Bath? I want him to have a happy ending. Probably won’t though. Cannot wait for the final series to be released.

Loved when Dushane offers Jamie a Fruit Shoot when they first meet!

MissClementine

ive also rewatched
amazing drama

agree that Kano and also jaq are stand out

the one that moved me was when he has to execute dris , and they have this normal chat abiut dris glasses on the way to the roof
and when he sends jaq away 😭

I actually dread series 5 after the ending to 4

FridayiminlovewithRobertSmith · 05/05/2022 20:15

This thread inspired me to rewatch from the start too - so many things I’d forgotten and so many layers I didn’t originally spot.

I love the way they include the mundanity - the discussion about Dris’ glasses as he’s walking to be executed, setting up a bed in her living room for Duchane’s mum at end of life. The heartbreaking cruelty to Amma and the pettiness of officials. The love/hate fraternal dynamics with Duchane and Sully and the way their values hopes and ambitions come through despite what they do.

I’ll stop gushing.

I will be sad for a final series but think its really up there with the very best British dramas.

Agreed. Next stop James Bond 😉

MissClementine · 06/05/2022 09:57

Keep gushing about it!

Top Boy deserves it and I really agree about seeing extra layers rewatching it.

It is such clever writing when you can be routing for these people even when you see the awful stuff they do. I felt this more with Sully though and with Jamie, trying to raise his boys. So heartbreaking.

Great British drama indeed covering so many issues affecting society.

Oh no the ending. I’m absolutely gutted and I don’t think I can forgive S.
Its that gritty that when the characters smile you think what’s going on with their face. It’s so unusual. You barely see their teeth!
Good for Lauren that was another big shock I didn’t see coming and nice to see the sisters together.

SunnyShiner · 24/05/2022 22:17

I'm praying the ending was a dream. Steph kept saying he looked tired so maybe?

Binkybix · 08/08/2022 01:50

Just watched it all (also took me a while to twig in the summerhouse thing). Probably because I started with 3, then stopped that to go back, I loved Jamie. But I also love Sully, so it’s confusing for me. Don’t like Dushane. Love Jaq.

I don’t live in the UK but used to live in a part of London where this way of speaking was frequent, so this and the filming locations reminds me of home!

BluOcty · 08/08/2022 04:03

They are all just brilliant in Top Boy. And I love the music as well. Get Kano and Little Simz on your Spotify playlist.

andrewbetts66 · 17/12/2023 21:18

As you said you can’t compare due to totally different genre. But I love both just the same. I love sully and Dushane just an much as madam Whistledown
