Anyone watching/watched Top Boy on Netflix?

It's a bit bleak/depressing/violent at times due to the subject matter (East London drug trade), but I love the characters, especially Jaq and Sully. The acting and story lines are superb.

I know it's a totally different genre, but it leaves Bridgeton dead in the water IMHO.

Anyone else?

Yes me and I love Sully but have always loved Kano since his first album.

I was a bit upset at the end.

Scianel · 06/04/2022 22:07

It's definitely worth watching the recap before embarking on season 4. But I don't think I'm spoilering to say that Sully ends S3 very much alive.

MaxNormal · 06/04/2022 23:22

I found the ending a huge shock, really gutted by it but I suppose a happy ending all round wouldn't have been believable.

Ironically it was Sully I'd been worrying for all season then Psycho Sully re-emerged.

I didn't find Jamie's behaviour in Spain that weird. He'd been working his way to the top in S3 before he got set up so presumably still harboured ambitions.

My heart was pounding watching Lauren escape from Curtis, I thought the taxi driver was going to unlock the door.

Yes I watched it it’s amazing. Best season yet, very sad and even worse a real reflection of life for a lot of people. The end though !!!!!

bluejelly · 06/04/2022 23:52

Such a brilliant series. The acting, plotting and characters are incredible by the final season (bit more basic in the Summerhouse series). But overall, epic.

Say nothin.

Maves · 06/04/2022 23:59

Was hardcore this season still...
The ending though honestly was powerful.
Love jaq
And Curtis what an actor.

@Sisisimone

Sorry, I'm a Sully girl 😍
I'd climb Sully like a tree Grin.
Featuredcreature · 07/04/2022 02:50

Just started watching from season 1, really liking it, is the young girl the same actress who was in black mirror?

Featuredcreature · 07/04/2022 02:51

Also team sully all the way he is beautiful.

Kanaloa · 07/04/2022 03:55

I loved the new series, watched it all in one weekend! I thought it was the best one yet. I hear the next one is the last one, which I’m actually quite glad about, too many programmes drag it on and on till I can’t be bothered anymore and they’ve beat the life o of it.

But the new series I thought was fabulous, really honest and quite binge watchable! I didn’t want it to end and wish I’d savoured them and rationed them out a bit!

Kanaloa · 07/04/2022 03:59

@dane8

Basically the show used to be called Top Boy on channel 4 then Netflix (I think) bought it.

For some reason Netflix decided to split it into two programmes, renaming the original series Top Boy Summerhouse and calling the new one Top Boy. Top Boy Summerhouse should be watched first in full, then Top Boy. It’s a bit confusing and a daft way to go about it to be honest, I’ve no clue why they did it. It makes new viewers to the series confused as you would think Top Boy is the original and Summerhouse is a spin off!

The original shows Dushane and Sully’s origins, plus there is a character Ranell and his friend Gem who doesn’t reappear later but sort of similar to Stefan and Ats in the later series - shows basically how young boys end up in this lifestyle/these situations through desperation and difficulties. Also I would think the later series might be confusing if you haven’t seen Summerhouse because that’s where Jason is introduced as a little boy. I just wanted to take him home 😢

AWOIF · 07/04/2022 04:27

Watch in order :
Topboy:Summerhouse
Then Topboy season1, then season 2.
I loved it, the next season is the last one Shock

redtshirt50 · 07/04/2022 04:34

Another one for team sully here

Dushane is a bit too perfect

OldWivesTale · 07/04/2022 05:29

Yes, I watched it all back to front which can get a bit confusing. I've only just realised the little boy in Summerhouse is the lad who died in the fire in the later series.

It's such a great series for so many reasons; great storyline that covers lots of important stuff - Windrush, racism, poverty, domestic violence, homophobia, the reality of life for refugees, county lines - in such a relatable way... Plus there's loads of eye candy.

LoudSnoringDog · 07/04/2022 05:38

Ah I've found my people!!

I don't know how I missed Top Boy the first time around in ch4.

I made the mistake of watching Top Boy 1 on Netflix and couldn't get into it. Then DS1 told me I needed to watch Summerhouse.
I'm now on episode 4 of the last season.
Love it. Love the characters.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 07/04/2022 06:57

watched summerhouse in the past
but can't remember if i watched both series - have to work it out before going to top boy

PurplePinecone · 07/04/2022 07:06

I used to rate sully but not happy with him after the end of season 2! Why!! Suppose that sets up the next season.

Also where is ra'nell!?

Yes, and Black Panther.

Possible spoilers...

Jamie had already tried to kill them, Sully swallowed it. Then Jamie tried to do them over again in Spain. Sully couldn't let it slide a 2nd time.
Plus they made Jamie kill his friend so he would likely go for revenge down the line.
Also, killing his friend showed his level of loyalty- Dushane and Sully have been told to kill each other and they never have because they are loyal to each other. Jamie has not demonstrated that loyalty.
Sully did what had to be done- that's the life.
It's sad because of Jamie's responsibilities to his brothers but objectively it was the way it had to go.
Plus I love Sully- if I was on a boat next door I would not be going anywhere! HmmGrin

Scianel · 07/04/2022 09:26

Curtis reminded me so much, in style and demeanor (but clearly not accent!) of Genny Savastano in Gomorrah, if anyone has watched that.

His was an excellent character and really well acted. So menacing.

DragonOverTheMoon · 07/04/2022 11:08

Yes I felt afraid of Curtis. Was worried about Lauren. I wonder if there will be repercussions next season.

Kanaloa · 07/04/2022 12:35

I thought the acting of Curtis was very good but I felt weirdly affectionate about him because I remember him from BBC’s musketeers. Even though he was ever so menacing the whole time I was thinking ‘no but you’re nice really Porthos.’
