Will anyone be watching this? Living with the Amish?

You can see such a split between the age groups and there is a lot of bias and selfishness going on as the weeks progress. To start with it was all about the good of the community, but now you see people just doing what they want and community be damned.

The borrowed radio - no community agreement on that. Victoria buying herself a dress out of community funds and not seeing any problem with that. Hazel clearly needing help or to be allowed to buy butter (when Victoria has frittered away money on a fucking dress), community says no and Victoria, instead of doing the community-minded thing and just giving her some butter, freezes it. But wait, I thought they didn't have electricity so how come they have a freezer and how come they had power for the radio??? Argh!

I8toys · 31/03/2022 17:40

Can't stand Victoria. Her voice grates on me. Can't give someone butter but can buy a dress! Their priorities are skewed. They were awful to Hazel and I can understand her frustration as they gave her zero help just said I made loads of butter you didn't. They need to shut up and listen to other people.

Love Kevin - he's such a joyful spirit and his friendship with Jacob is lovely. The pigs jumping through the tyres was hilarious and trying to play catch with them.

Shame the parents couldn't stay and put their problems aside so that their children could experience it for longer. The kids looked like they were really enjoying it.

I agree with all of this, but particularly Victoria: she comes across as a smug arse. Bet she's a ToryHmm . Her voice is so grating.
SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 31/03/2022 17:57

Victoria referred to herself and Joseph as 'the power couple', then said she was only joking. I think they do see themselves as being in charge though. I would feel annoyed if she spoke to me as she spoke to Hazel. Though it does say upthread that Hazel was offered butter, and turned it down, implying the money was actually for something else.

Puffalicious · 31/03/2022 19:12

I heard that 'power couple'commentConfused.

Also her just happening to slide in that she 'used to model'. FFS, what a pita. Her make up and dressing up on the VT looked ridiculous.

@Puffalicious - I sniggered a bit at the model comment. Yeah for 5 minutes, love Wink

Absolutely loving this series. After I’d watched channel,4 threw up a link to another series from about 10 years ago called Living with the Amish and one of the Amish families involved was the Millers from this show!

Bluetowelsandflannels · 31/03/2022 22:31

Victoria very upset that the Millers are going!

louise5754 · 01/04/2022 07:56

I prefer Harry and Fran and all the younger ones.

I liked Gary and his family though. I think it would have been done better if it was either all families, all older couples like hazel or all the young singles. It didn't work having a mix. In the real Amish Community it would all be families so their priorities would be the same.

I think Kevin will be really depressed after the show. He's in his element here. Anyone else feel some people here either born before or after their time?

I think Kevin was. I know I definitely know I should have been born 150 years ago. Probably more.

They were non Amish at the time?
purpleme12 · 01/04/2022 13:06

I'm just watching episode 3. Not watched episode 4 yet
Do they just have fridges and no other electricity?

purpleme12 · 01/04/2022 14:53

Quite sad listening to Gary and Hazel talking about their life at home

I did feel a bit sorry for Hazel when she was speaking to Victoria.
I kind of feel like they could have listened to Hazel more
I mean it's hardly kind the request for alcohol anyway

Victoria had a sad backstory

Yes, it was so sad- 9 hours gaming 😱. I hope they move forward with renewed ideas for a different life.

Victoria does have a sad story. I imagine this will be part of why she is the way she is. There's never an excuse for being an arse, but always a reason.

Bizarrely I recently googled "can I live with the Amish" and was looking at holiday options! I'm fascinated by this.

Never heard of this show and am overseas so I'm going to investigate. Thank you!

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 01/04/2022 17:16

@soberfabulous at the end of the show, there is a reference to a holiday company in the credits. I did wonder about it, sounds like that explains it. Are you going to give it a go?

I would absolutely love to!

I will honestly investigate more.

Somehow I've been sucked into a corporate and consumerist life when really I crave simplicity and nature. I'm doing my best to tap into this (getting rid of stuff, growing my own, having chickens!) but honestly a much much simpler life is the dream.

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 01/04/2022 17:23

Guffawed at this!

My husband always jokes about me joining the Amish: we don't have a tv, I'm fond of a voluminous shapeless dress 😂 and in bed at 830 most night.

He's now eye rolling whilst I google Amish holidays.

I'll keep a large mental log to update you on whilst I knit new friends in my pinafore!

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 01/04/2022 18:27

Yes, do! The Amish way of life has really interested me, since I saw the film Witness (?) with Harrison Ford. I've heard that it isn't always as lovely as it look for the women though.

purpleme12 · 01/04/2022 18:41

It's certainly intriguing

But no way could I do it

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 01/04/2022 18:45

I don't think I could do it, but I have regularly looked around me and thought there is far too much 'stuff' here. I've watched a bit of stuff that the Minimalists do online, and it's pretty interesting. It's a couple of American guys if you're not familiar. They did a thing on Netflix, IIRC. So I think what I'm waffling around, is that I could learn lessons, even if I couldn't do the whole thing, IUSWIM. And if I'm on hols, I keep off MN. On purpose Grin

Leftbutcameback · 02/04/2022 16:56

I'm still struggling to remember everyone and there are only nine of them left I think! Is Jacob's sister still there? I was looking up articles about all the participants but there were no individual photos

bookish83 · 03/04/2022 08:59

Victoria and Joseph really showed themselves up. I am quite embarrassed watching them! Joseph doesn't appear interested in her at all. Funny couple

I think it is sad that the older ones left. Doesn't feel much like a community but now I am sure it will feel like an Amish version of love island....

Kevin is a lovely soul. Quite susceptible to cult following though as he has such a strong need to be happy and belong. I hope the show looks after his MH

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 03/04/2022 12:55

I luffs Kevin! Made me feel all maternal again. I hope they do look after him. TBF there are other off-grid communities he could go to after. I think there's one in Wales somewhere. He shines like a good deed in a naughty world. Star
