Will anyone be watching this? Living with the Amish?

I'm very much enjoying this, but the whining about booze is somewhat annoying - surely everyone knows the Amish don't drink?! Why on earth would you put your name down for something like this if you're just going to bitch about not getting your 'cans on a Saturday night'?
Penny is really irritating too. Love the young lad with UC - Kevin? He's lovely.

OytheBumbler · 23/03/2022 21:26

I think Amish do drink but they've not got enough money to buy it as well as food.

@OytheBumbler - the Amish don’t drink, it’s forbidden!

Penny needs to just go home, she's spoiling it for everyone. A shame for her girls though, as they both seem lovely.

Frizzlington · 23/03/2022 21:57

Penny is a complete self absorbed, pain in the proverbial ass.

BlueBlueCowWondering · 23/03/2022 21:59

I've only started watching today so missed some people's back stories.

But just from this episode I can't help thinking that Penny's daughters would have thrived had she left and the girls stayed.

Billionneeded · 23/03/2022 22:08

Penny is a selfish, self absorbed PITA. She should definitely have left her lovely girls there, such a shame, they were clearly getting so much from the experience

SeedsSeedsSeeds · 23/03/2022 22:18

My heart broke for Penny's eldest girl saying that she had always been there to pick her mum back up in tough times. She's a child, it shouldn't be her responsibility. Then she so obviously wanted to stay, but had to go to make her mum happy. I would love to try a simpler life, but want to be doing more of the farming and less of the washing up. Male and female roles would not suit me!

DentonsFringeArnottsWaistcoat · 23/03/2022 22:43

Obviously this is a TV reality show, but I’m struggling to believe real Amish would have cooperated with this. Also, of course, again, it’s TV and all that entails, but not having a sugary cereal for your kids is too much to endure? The location, the produce available, everything really, is so much more than really disadvantaged families in the UK could even dream of right now that this is so fucking inappropriate as a concept. And yes a pp mentioned council house swap - more poor people porn. Fucking disgusting.

@DentonsFringeArnottsWaistcoat - they are a real family. They’re doing it for an experiment, to promote the Amish way of life and they probably wanted to mix with English people and live in a farm in England for a while.

Penny has apparently mistaken this programme for a Real Housewives franchise. I couldn't spend more than 5 minutes in her company, very trying personality.

@longwayoff - she's gone now - despite her kids wanting her to stay.

OMG - she was on this This Morning saying she "didn't know what Amish was"

Thanks, gonnagetgoing, probably best for her. I do feel sorry for her children, mega narcissism masquerading as concerned mum. She won't change any time soon. Very unfair of the production company to deliberately select someone so unsuitable just for a bit of guaranteed conflict. But that's reality tv.

Gonnagetgoing · 24/03/2022 12:54

@longwayoff - I'm wondering if Penny applied to the programme hoping to become a reality TV star?!

Could not stand Penny. A selfish spoilt idiot. Did she never think of googling what the Amish way of life is?

How could she ask for a washing machine when there is no electric? She is so dumb it's untrue.

The people asking for alcohol annoyed me too. For goodness sake they should have known what they were letting themselves in for.

I love that it seems to be the youngsters that are adapting the best. Some of the older ones are just embarrassing

@mydogisthebest - I think Hazel (one of the women who asked for alcohol) is leaving next week.

It does seem to be embarrassing that most of the younger people are adapting best and showing up the older ones.

I think that's a fair guess gonnegetgoing, I expect a rash of 'my Amish hell' stories, many tears and a 'this is my webcam' will all be along shortly.

Leftbutcameback · 24/03/2022 17:47

I've just seems episode two and at the start it says a family left in week one - I must have missed that? Something to do with washing!

FriendofDorothy · 24/03/2022 18:00

Fascinating stuff.

I think I would struggle at first but then thrive in that environment.

GlitteryGreen · 25/03/2022 15:41

I can't understand why some of these people ever entered this show? Why would you do it if you have barely even a vague understand of how the Amish live?

How did Penny think they'd be able to buy Frosties and that she'd just be looking after her own kids and not contributing towards anything else?

Just bizarre.

GlitteryGreen · 25/03/2022 15:45

It must be so frustrating for those who are taking it seriously, working really hard and giving it their best shot to see those who are just sitting back and barely helping with anything.

Bloodymess · 25/03/2022 18:32

The makers must deliberately chose people they are aware have no clue about the Amish way of life and won’t bother to look it up, add drama. They’d need to be careful with the balance though or everyone will leave early or viewers get frustrated and stop watching.

Reality tv isn’t new now and you can see how they add controversial characters/loveable rogues/people with sad backstory and then just a few people who could thrive in the jungle/house/Amish life style/island.

Yes, I agree with this. Such a disappointment for her elder daughter - a lovely girl who appeared to have to mother her mum.
purpleme12 · 25/03/2022 20:40

It's interesting how in the pyshycology test it said Penny scored low for agreeableness!
I felt really angry on Victoria's behalf
It's not about me fitting in with the community, the community can't fit in with me 🤣

Thought it was real shame she couldn't get on with it though as it seemed her daughters were having a good time?

LadyEloise1 · 26/03/2022 10:01

Her older daughter wanted to stay Sad
Penny really hadn't relinquished her "old life" as I doubt the Amish wear false lashes and eyeshadow. Smile
I'm just amazed at the lovely weather.
Does it not rain in Devon ?
