I loved the book of this by Adam Kay. I know others weren't so keen.
BBC has dramatised this and starts in early Feb. Just a heads up for others who liked the book.

Just watching, haven’t read the book, maternity dept is known as “brats & twats” apparently. He sounds delightful.

Fireblanket · 08/02/2022 21:22

Disappointed so far. I like Ben Wishaw and enjoyed the book but this is just too cynical and rude.

bellamountain · 08/02/2022 21:24

Can just imagine the men watching this thinking being a woman and giving a birth is no big deal. This is awful.

LuckySantangelo35 · 08/02/2022 21:29

What a horrendously misogynistic programme this is

It's shocking.
LuckySantangelo35 · 08/02/2022 21:30

@AdobeWanKenobi

He was a script consultant for Mrs Browns Boys as well I believe, though I seem to recall him being utterly lambasted a few years ago when the lyrics to some of his bands songs came out. IIRC his excuse was it was a charity thing for RAG week. Here's his 'delightful' Northern Birds.

If you go to Bolton,
If you go to Manchester or Crewe,
Newcastle or Scarborough,
York or Scunthorpe, Bradford, Barnsley too,
Or Grimsby.
Listen up to what we have to say.

Northern birds are lazy, ugly whores, who smell of burgers,
So don’t have too much to drink,
Or you might fuck one,
And end up getting AIDS.

There’s nothing fun,
To be found up the M1,
Northern birds are lower class,
Slags who take it up the arse.

They’re in the sack,
After one cider and black,
But they’re fucking awful rides,
And your dick won’t touch the sides.
(Da da da da da da da da da da)
Northern Birds
(Da da da da da da)

If you really have to go up North,
Then follow our advice.
Fight away the women,
Or you’ll find yourself with pubic lice,
And herpes.
You’re much better staying in the South.

Northern Birds are desperate, ugly, hippos, dressed in Burberry,
With a peanut for a brain,
And an accent,
That makes you want to die.

Now, you’ve been warned.
They’re all physically deformed.
Northern birds are all obese,
And they’re riddled with disease.

Try to escape.
Northern sex is worse than rape.
Stay down South, and mark my words,
Steer well clear of Northern Birds.
(Da da da da da da da da da da)
Northern Birds
(Da da da da da da)
Northern Birds

Wow. Vile.

I mean he sings about disabled children, eating disorders and other vile things so it's not a surprise he's an insensitive and entitled male **.
sashagabadon · 08/02/2022 21:33

Wanted to like this but it’s not funny and pretty depressing

felulageller · 08/02/2022 21:33

If you believe he kept a diary you are are far too naive.

He's shoved a load of anecdotes, other docs experiences and urban myths into diary format to make it more saleable.

It worked.

sashagabadon · 08/02/2022 21:37

It is true that there are buckets and yellow hazard signs everywhere though and pipes regularly burst

WinterTrees · 08/02/2022 21:39

The casual, deep-seated misogyny is genuine though.

That poor woman
And the SHO

Blondeshavemorefun · 08/02/2022 21:44

Ria is Anne from motherland

KohlaParasaurus · 08/02/2022 21:54

The TV version has captured the emotional horror of being a junior doctor and constantly expecting to have to do something that's beyond your competence.

pollygartertidywife · 08/02/2022 21:54

Brilliant. Absolutely outstanding. Loved it.

summertimerolls · 08/02/2022 21:57

I really enjoyed it. My experience of male doctors in pregnancy and childbirth was a bucketload of misogyny so I suppose at least it seems like it's truthful 🤷‍♀️

It reminds me a bit of Bodies which is truly brilliant, and absolutely terrifying. I was glad I'd finished having children when I saw it for the first time...

springydaff · 08/02/2022 21:58

What happened with the prem baby delivery? I missed that bit. Why was he apologising to the baby saying he was tired (and wanted to go home) etc?

Don't watch it then. You sound like a member of the professionally offended. I loved it - one of the funniest things I've seen for a long time. A bit of a news flash... at the time this was set Misogyny was even more overt in the NHS than it is now. It was a true reflection of the time.
doodlejump1980 · 08/02/2022 22:01

I hated the book. I found it really misogynistic and thought he blamed mothers and mocked them for having sections. I won’t be watching it.

ExtremelyDelighted · 08/02/2022 22:02

Sounds as though it was as bad as the book, glad I didn't watch.

BadHairDayExpert · 08/02/2022 22:02

I thought it was well-acted and pulled no punches.
Also - in fairness to Adam Kay - who wrote the screenplay: he has not remotely tried to sanitise it or who he was. He has not been written as likeable and it actually takes a lack of ego to do that and Ben plays it pitch-perfect. You both feel antipathy but also sympathy.
What did you think OP?

SunshineCake1 · 08/02/2022 22:02

@lljkk

I challenge anyone to quote any part of the book where AK gave pronoun to his partner.

Claiming he pretended the partner in the book was female sounds like a weak attempt to slur AK.

AK never once gave a pronoun to his partner in the book -- he even mentions how careful he was not to do that in other interviews. It wasn't important or anyone's business, anyway, just as he never spelled out partner's full name or explained their occupation or background.

He absolutely did say SHE and I would quote but his book went in the bin. A complete load of sexiest unfunny crap.
airbalonz · 08/02/2022 22:03

How are the female patients portrayed? Wondering if it’s coming across better on screen than on paper.

2022IamHavingYa · 08/02/2022 22:08

I’m
Against the grain here, but I liked it

BadHairDayExpert · 08/02/2022 22:09

He thought the Mum was a time-waster/crying wolf, as she had pretended to faint earlier and was worried about spots on her tongue. (taste buds). The newbie was initially told to do blood tests but he then said to send her home instead...so it was his fault the pre-eclampsia was not picked up earlier and that the baby was a premmie. The older doctor saved both and then told him to change the notes i.e. cover-up/close ranks (which I suspect happens in all branches of medicine all the time).
