I loved the book of this by Adam Kay. I know others weren't so keen.
BBC has dramatised this and starts in early Feb. Just a heads up for others who liked the book.

So Shruti did pass her exams. I was wrong. I thought that she had failed and it tipped her over the edge.

*passing

Did Adam and Harry get back together? I thought they said it would only work if Adam gave up medicine and he then realised he couldn’t do that, so I assumed they remained separated.

adasthorne · 26/03/2022 09:50

I watched the series and I've just finished the book. I can't see anything that points to Adam Kay being a misogynist despite many saying so in this thread.

In the book he talks with great sympathy about the impact of infertility on women and the impact of porn on female body image. generally he was balanced in his views on entitled/idiotic/bonkers patients and relatives regardless of their sex. As he was an obs and gynaecology doctor the chances of those being more likely to be women are obvious.
I was flogging my guts out in nhs hospitals at the same time as him. I get his perspective and frustrations and the gallows humour is spot on!
I'm going to rewatch all episodes on the back of finishing the book and I hope for a second series.

I’m really enjoying this, and totally don’t think it or the book is misogynistic! I work for the NHS, it’s very realistic

Runningnewbie · 07/09/2022 23:15

Just finished the series, wow that was hard hitting with Shruti 😢

@Runningnewbie

how depressing

it’s totally misogyny

Blossomtoes · 08/09/2022 17:02

It’s no more misogyny than Motherland.

Runningnewbie · 08/09/2022 23:20

I really don’t get the hate for it on this thread!

Runningnewbie · 19/09/2022 11:56

Ok I have re-read the book after reading this thread, convinced that I must have missed loads of misogyny etc. I still don’t think he’s misogynistic 🤣 I actually think he seems quite nice, he goes above and beyond a lot 🤷‍♀️

And he doesn’t refer to H as a female once

pinok · 19/09/2022 13:10

@Runningnewbie that’s fair enough that’s your opinion. It’s just always going to be one of those books that is very, very divisive. Lots of people love it but there will always be lots and lots of people who find it misogynistic, and ‘misogyny’ is inevitably going to always be attached to conversations and discussion around the book.

SequinsandStilettos · 19/09/2022 17:45

Strange timing, this thread being revived and defensive of Adam Kay, just as he has a new book and tour out Hmm.
He did not say H was a woman, no, but he was somewhat closeted and was once married a woman - mentioned (not by name) in his new book.
Daniel Mays ought to have been cast in the adaptation.

SequinsandStilettos · 19/09/2022 17:46

married to

Runningnewbie · 19/09/2022 17:55

I knew nothing about the new book or tour 🤣

What prompted my post was I was discussing the show with some doctors who couldn’t stand it and said it was awful and misogynistic. I hadn’t thought that, nor when I read the book years ago, so I felt really think and thought I should re read it 🤣 So I have, and still don’t think it’s misogynistic 🤷‍♀️ So I’m obviously really thick 🤣
