Anyone watched the first episode ? The US Downton Abbey set in New York in 1882.

Everyone keeps calling it the "US Downton" I loved it. I think possibly even more than Downton.

I would if it really was like that then in New York ie Old Money - v - New Money and the snobbery that came with that

I haven’t watched it yet but it’s on my list, I’ll maybe catch it later tonight. I love Christine Baranski (sp?). It’s on Sky Atlantic I think?

zafferana · 25/01/2022 19:06

I haven't seen it yet, but I will watch it later. Good to hear that it's started well!

GreekGod · 25/01/2022 19:31

Yes it’s on Sky Atlantic , Christine baranski and Miranda from SATC and Meryl Streeps daughter

It started brilliantly 😊

It's bloody fab, it's like Dynasty/ Dallas/ Downtown Abbey all rolled into one Grin

Boredsillyathome · 25/01/2022 21:05

Just watching it and it's fantastic it's like a super glam Downton!!

dorkfink · 25/01/2022 21:07

Thanks for the heads up

Rhubarb01 · 25/01/2022 21:55

I really enjoyed the first episode. It has all the ingredients for a good show. Definitely Downtonesque and some great costume and sets. Looks like it will be enjoyable, fingers crossed.

Lolly86 · 25/01/2022 22:55

Really enjoyed the first episode. Not quite Downton but it was good seeing
a period drama set in different surroundings...

Bobrosspaintbrush · 26/01/2022 00:01

Just watched it, loved it I was a bit gutted I couldn’t binge it.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 26/01/2022 00:08

Me too!

hilbil21 · 26/01/2022 16:24

Watched it last night. Love it! Wish I could binge it Grin

cloudyrain · 26/01/2022 16:26

I have decided to save it to binge on when all episodes are available

sluj · 26/01/2022 16:53

I enjoyed it but it didn't grip me. Maybe too many characters at once? I will persevere though as it seems like something I should love...

dynamitegirl · 26/01/2022 18:30

Is it suitable for a 12yo girl? I need a new drama to watch with DD and wonder if this might capture her imagination?

KineticSand · 26/01/2022 18:35

It really reminded me of Edith Wharton novels. If you like Gilded Age you would probably like her novels

Torunette · 26/01/2022 19:59

I watched it this morning, and loved it. It's so wonderfully refreshing to see a drama that focuses on the lives of older women, albeit very wealthy ones in this case, and that doesn't start off within a climate of utter misery from the off.

And I liked Cynthia Nixon in it. I've seen that her character in this seems to have irritated a lot of people, but I thought she was interesting, though somewhat like the portrayal Nixon did of Emily Dickenson.

And what I really liked about it was that the houses looked new. It always narks me in costume dramas that they use original locations and properties but, of course, the buildings look old when they wouldn't have done at the time.

It does feel very Edith Wharton, yes. My secret prediction is that it will come out that Agnes rid herself of her husband in an underhand way. Grin

greatape · 26/01/2022 20:10

I enjoyed it but fell asleep. I was tired and got most of the way through.

I will watch again and will try dd (also 12) with it on the weekend but I wonder if it may be a bit slow for her.

And I love Edith Wharton so much - I binge read her when I was18. House of Mirth killed me! I may reread off the back of this.....

Netaporter · 27/01/2022 16:05

I loved it. Great casting. Like gossip girl but with bustles 😂

karlakourt · 27/01/2022 18:01

More like American Bridgerton than Downton so far

hopeishere · 27/01/2022 23:22

I liked it. I knew as soon as she said 200 guests it would be a flop.

Boood · 28/01/2022 11:07

Loved episode one. I hope Bernadette Banner does a review of the costumes.

BestIsWest · 28/01/2022 15:15

I’m not sure yet. I’d like to see more of the servants lives like we did in Downton. I was hoping for a costume review too!

JacquelineCarlyle · 29/01/2022 14:45

I really enjoyed it and enjoyed the servant snobbery re the new money family.

Hope it continues to be good!

Ulysses · 29/01/2022 17:39

I’d read a couple of fairly bad reviews so was on guard but I really enjoyed it. The costumes were beautiful. Plenty of scope for various storylines to emerge too.

SilverGlassHare · 30/01/2022 19:12

Loved it! Really looking forward to episode two… agree re Edith Wharton echoes, it reminded me of a gorgeous Sunday evening-type adaptation of her Buccaneers, which I loved when I saw it years and years ago.
