Previius thread

Hopefully not — two new threads in one show would be a bit ridiculous. Grin

Polite reminder that this is a spoiler-free thread

Just catching up with the thread, I loved Strictly tonight.

Although I don't think a couples choice should be in the semi finals, too emotive. My prediction is Rhys and John in the dance off and either could go!

I blinking love AJ and Rose, I think their dance partnerships are fab-u-lous Glitterball

Motherdare · 11/12/2021 23:30

I hope John and Johannes go out tonight. I don’t like watching them. The professional completely outshines the celebrity every week, and puts himself front and centre of each dance. I don’t like that. Plus the constant drama about being gay. They were massively overmarked for that contemporary dance.

Runningupthecurtains · 11/12/2021 23:31

@JayAlfredPrufrock

Legging is the word you are looking for.
I know but I thought people might not and I didn't want footless tight confussion -my primary school was next to a canal and they dragged canal history in to everything. It didn't put me off as much as it should as I did social history A level and focused on the industrial Revolution for much of my degree (because I'm lazy and it was easier to expand on the periods I had covered already). It been almost totally pointless in everyday life for the last 30 years.
iklboodolphrednosedpaindear · 11/12/2021 23:36

Anyone else getting slightly annoyed about J & J banging on about what they'd achieved for the gay community and implying that their dancing as a same sex couple on Strictly was a first?

Weirdly, a lot of people are more willing to accept two women dancing together than two men. Many ballroom / Latin dance places have far fewer men than women so it's 'acceptable' for women to dance together than two men.

TurquoiseBaubles · 11/12/2021 23:57

There were two men dancing together on DWTS Ireland and on Dancing on Ice. It's not a first, though it's probably a first on the BBC!

In my opinion they should be good dancers first and a same sex couple second if they are to win. I don't care who dances with who, but I do think that same sex couples are often more boring to watch, you might as well be watching on person dancing on their own in front of a mirror a lot of the time. For me, the interesting thing about Strictly is watching the couples interact, and part of that is watching the different size/shape/strength of bodies working together to make a beautiful movement.

With John and Johannes there is too much dancing side by side, too much mirroring, too little interaction (in my opinion) to make it as interesting. They were great early on, but as the other couples have progressed I think they have stayed much the same as they were at the start.

I would also prefer to vote for the winners on dance ability rather than simply the fact that they are achieving anything, or breaking down barriers or anything else.

CatAndHisKit · 12/12/2021 01:39

Rose is my favourite now - light as a feather and cool/precise but most importantly, bring a feel of classic romance to ballroom. Makes for a timeless type of dancer. Latin great too - more her own take, not sensual but brings the attitude and substance - loved the Ice Queen to the Shivers. I think it was a bit better than tonight's Argentine but that was also very good.
I agree with poster above, I think Gio is a bit (a lot?) in lov with her. Great combo of a passionate man / cool yet delicate woman as a pair.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 12/12/2021 01:40

Many ballroom / Latin dance places have far fewer men than women so it's 'acceptable' for women to dance together than two men.

The other thing is that if you're a male competitive dancer, there's no competitive benefit to dancing with another man. Chances are you'll both place higher if you dance with girls.

@GoodPrincessWenceslas

When I'm in charge of Strictly, there will be a rule that anyone who turns up to dance in bare feet instantly gets deducted 10 points. And Contempowaft will be banned.
Applause.

I would also ban fucking about at the beginning pretending to be a chef or an ice cream seller or whatever this weeks bollocks is

Yes, points off for faffin’ abaht with props and overacting pointless scenarios apparently relating to the dance- and I mostly don’t like it when they start the routine sitting down.

derxa · 12/12/2021 05:01

Absolutely. The pioneering agrarian work of Turnip Townsend would make a touching Couple's Choice. Who can forget the Golden Hoof

ThePoetsWife · 12/12/2021 06:31

@Claymorekick

I don't know - that is why I said I wasn't sure and happy to be corrected. But, the fact is that I don't register it now - she started the series as Rose, the deaf contestant but now she is Rose, the amazing dancer.

I am aware I am probably putting my foot in it more so I am going to bow out now.

Keep dancing all Glitterball Glitterball

That's lovely and I'm sure not offensive at all Smile
WhereAreWeNow · 12/12/2021 07:59

I agree about J&J. I think John is a beautiful dancer (he wasn't a novice, was he?) but I didn't think that CC was very good and I agree with the point that someone else made about there being too much side by side and mirroring. I'm not finding them as interesting to watch.
Rose and Gio on the other hand were spellbinding. I think Gio is a a really brilliant choreographer and teacher. I really wasn't expecting much from that AT but it was fab-u-lous.

Frezia · 12/12/2021 08:06

@CatAndHisKit I think the Rose and Giovanni pairing has the chemistry and setup of a classic romance novel: the handsome womaniser transforms his ways after falling in love with a beautiful, vulnerable yet independent and feisty heroine. Which I think is one of the main reasons why people got so invested in them. I'm not sure that he really is in love with her (I do think they're very close and inspired by each other) but I think they understand why their pairing is so attractive to the public and bring out that atmosphere in their choreography and performances. Ie. not faking it (the deep connection) but presenting it in the way that resonates with the public. Which I guess is why they're there, to sell us a convincing story.

WeAreTheHeroes · 12/12/2021 08:13

Two women dancing together has long been a thing - back when their were dancehalls rather than discos there were frequently more women than men, especially in wartime, and women would dance together because they wanted to dance.

lollipoprainbow · 12/12/2021 08:19

Unpopular opinion, but I really want to see AJ go this week (doubt that’ll happen though!)

Me too!

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 12/12/2021 08:20

Well they are the only couple that has really pickled my walnuts and warmed my cockles.

Rhys has come close too. There is something quite endearing about him.

AJ is beautiful to watch but I don’t feel much when I watch her apart from wishing I had something resembling her body and her bendiness.

John is also delightful to look at but I wish (like has been mentioned before) he had been partnered with Kai.

I know who I’d want in the final but as was also mentioned heaps of moons ago, it really feels like it is Rose’s glittery ball and it has felt like that almost all the way through.

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 12/12/2021 08:21

Cockle warmers = Rose and Joe

TheDrsDocMartens · 12/12/2021 08:22

I think costumes have been slightly lazy with J&J dressing them the same, I prefer watching them when they’ve different but complimentary clothes.

I thinkRhys needs a few more weeks. It’s taken him a long time to relax and be himself, not helped by dance offs knocking his confidence but he’s definitely getting there. Will be good to see him after the tour and see how much he improves then.
334bu · 12/12/2021 08:27

I love AJ .

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 12/12/2021 08:37

I think he has the potential to shine on the tour.

He was too full on for me initially but I’ve really, really warmed to him. He has charmed me and I’m a hard old nut to crack.

I thought he was going to be another Karim and judged him on that.

I have to say I was very wrong.

herecomesthsun · 12/12/2021 08:47

@SheldonesqueTheBstard

And don’t tell me that wouldn’t be fabulous on Strictly. 😍
This is re Focus, prog rock that involves yodelling. Very high pitched.

3 words there. Dave Arch Band?

Really?

Sittinginthesand · 12/12/2021 08:48

I think it’s time for j and j to go, so much side by side dancing, and they don’t match. Their body shapes are so different it distracts from the mirroring, in a way that doesn’t happen with m/f partners. I find them going on about being so ‘ground breaking’ very tedious, I still don’t understand why being gay means john can’t dance with a member of the opposite sex. Does he not like women? Will he only dance with a potential date? And why the dance partners both have to be gay? The same sex pairing makes them hard to compare with the others, I also felt that the judges are massively over marking because of the narrative and they don’t dare not to. Completely different to when there was a female couple, who they seem to have forgotten all about! None of this is to say that I disprove of men dancing together, I don’t, but it isn’t the format on this particular show.

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 12/12/2021 08:52

Good point - sun Grin
