What do you think of Sarah Beeny's mega-mansion?

A new programme has started on Channel 4 following Sarah Beeny and her husband (and their four kids) as they build their ginormous new house in Somerset.

The house looks like a Lego version of a Georgian country pile. It's naff looking I'm being honest. (yes I can say that. no it isn't a very mean thing to say). The kind of house a Russian oligarch who fancied being an English country gent two weekends a year might have built.

I think we're supposed to worry along with them as to whether their Lego mansion runs over budget and doesn't get finished on time.

Their dog Maple is gorgeous though. No grumbles about Maple.

What do you think of Sarah Beeny's mega-mansion?

@MrsPelligrinoPetrichor

I didn't say they need disciplining but she doesn't do anything. No verbal correction etc. just laughs.

What do you think needs correcting, I haven't seen them misbehave? They're boisterous kids, best leave them to it imo!

just wondering what school the boys are at with tartan waistcoats as uniform?

salsamummy · 16/12/2021 17:48

Millfield I think.

@awaynboilyurheid

It’s a very tone deaf programme especially since COVID many are struggling and to watch them with their “problems” it’s just too annoying! I switched off quite quickly, used to like her but gone right off her and her hubby is a pain.
Yes. Tone deaf. More suitable to the 80s in more ways than 1. And no family of that size needs a house that size.

Such a lovely family and really admire their sense of fun and 'go for it' attitude.

Can't pelase everyone well done to them

ESP as both say they're not academic. Done really well both are self-made

RevolvingPivot · 29/12/2021 16:53

I like them and the kids will having an amazing childhood. They've done well for themselves.

It's annoying however when they say they can't afford to do the house properly so they are faking parts. Aren't their families millionaires? Might be confusing them with Kirsty Allsop there??

The teenagers were painting the ceiling too? I know it's a tv programme but obviously they have their own teams who renovate their rentals. They wouldn't do most of the things themselves.

If these two don't know what they're doing they need to be sacked from their current careers. I get the producers will tell them to exaggerate things and fake a drama but these two aren't stupid so I'm wondering why they are agreeing to look like they don't know what they're doing just to be in tv??

Olinguito · 30/12/2021 01:01

I'm finding the 'comedy' interludes with the children very staged and unconvincing. It was so obvious they wouldn't really ask the children to paint the intricate ceiling, and the mix up with the paint was totally unconvincing. The orchard wassailling scene also looked completely set up.

Twospaniels · 30/12/2021 17:51

Just finished watching the latest episode.

The boys painting the ceiling was ridiculous. Their dad should have given them the sample pots. Why would you trust them to ‘find’ the right ones?

I wish the wallpaper lady had her pink jacket on properly. It looked silly just hanging off her shoulders. She might have looked quite elegant if she had been wearing it.

Why were the puppies 11 wks old when leaving for new homes? I wouldn’t have thought she would have had problems finding homes for them. Optimum time is 8 wks usually.

I like the sitting room but it’s very formal. I can’t really see the boys lounging around in there. The sofas looked very uncomfortable.

Yep the room looked grand and expensive but not homely or cosy. I wondered whether they will save the posh areas for entertaining and have a corner sofa and carpet in another room 😂😂. I never just "sit" on our sofa. Non of us do.

Anyone else thinking they'll live in it for a short while and then sell it to foreign million/billionaires for a few million quid? It just doesn't fit as a "family" home for them - more like part of a long term plan to create a "fake" mansion for a Russian Oligarchs or an Arab Sheik. By "pretending" it's a family home, they'd avoid tax on the profit they'd make whereas if they developed it as a business, they'd have a whopping tax bill on the profit. A bit like Rides Hall maybe, where it was supposed to be their home, but it turned into a wedding venue and then sold as a business. I have a suspicion they're more of serial property developers/entreprenneurs rather than building a family home.

Anyone watching tonight?
Are they seriously the bedroom choices of four teenage boys? 😱
If it think I've ever seen a teen boy's room anything like those before!

IHateWasps · 04/01/2022 21:01

This is one of those programmes that I don't know why I watch, possibly just to keep my blood pressure up.. I find them and their boys utterly obnoxious and clearly not on the same planet as the rest of us.

I've never known a teenage boy who'd choose a bedroom like those. It's bizarre.

Fetchthevet · 04/01/2022 21:11

Only thing I liked was the secret door. I can't get over the size of the place, each of those bedrooms looked enormous.

SwedishEdith · 04/01/2022 21:11

I've given up - must clash with anything something interesting but I may need to catch up just to get annoyed Grin.

8 weeks in the minimum, not optimum. 12 weeks is increasingly common as thought to be better for the pups in regards to socialisation . 10 would be my minimum(not that I have any intention of breeding dogs)

Lulu1919 · 04/01/2022 21:13

The boys just showed off their bedrooms....I thought that was lovely

IHateWasps · 04/01/2022 21:16

Those bedrooms looked as though they were made for TV, not for the boys. If not, they have very peculiar tastes to say the least. My Ex attended Eton and his bedroom there and at home looked like any teenage boy's bedroom.

I'm surprised how much they want it like their other mega mansion. I don't really understand making new look old. The sitting room looked uncomfortable- those sofas are not for lounging in, that's for sure.
I do think she has a lovely set up with her brother and sil and all the kids- I wish I had that close a family (my siblings live abroad).

Roystonv · 04/01/2022 22:01

Agree with most previous posts. My query is all this talk of feeling guilty as too busy to spend time with the children but here they are yet again doing something which takes them away from them, pretend deadlines and no way is that dining room ever going to be used or the living room called cosy. With all their experience where has their taste gone - yes Disney style English country house as pp said, very strange.

I saw a bit of this programme tonight for the first and last time ever and yes I too found them and the boys utterly obnoxious and the bedrooms unbelivably horrible
BigSandyBalls2015 · 05/01/2022 13:02

Uncle Diccon .... snigger.
Sorry
I like them, and I like their boys .... wish my DCs spoke like they do!

However, I agree with the very odd choice of bedroom for that age group!

RevolvingPivot · 06/01/2022 23:15

Those rooms. They look like they belong in an old Manor House you pay to look around. Very strange!!
