What do you think of Sarah Beeny's mega-mansion?

A new programme has started on Channel 4 following Sarah Beeny and her husband (and their four kids) as they build their ginormous new house in Somerset.

The house looks like a Lego version of a Georgian country pile. It's naff looking I'm being honest. (yes I can say that. no it isn't a very mean thing to say). The kind of house a Russian oligarch who fancied being an English country gent two weekends a year might have built.

I think we're supposed to worry along with them as to whether their Lego mansion runs over budget and doesn't get finished on time.

Their dog Maple is gorgeous though. No grumbles about Maple.

What do you think of Sarah Beeny's mega-mansion?

Just watched tonight's episode. Not being funny but pretty sure once wild garlic has flowers it's past its usable best.

MissyB1 · 07/12/2021 21:26

That staircase Confused I don’t know is it just me?? It looked totally out of place!! Just awful.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 07/12/2021 22:10

I didn't like it at all, especially against the great walls, beautifully done but far too dark Confused

I'll bet my bottom dollar the place will be used as a wedding venue/ hotel.

OverByYer · 07/12/2021 22:17

Thats an ugly house.
If you have the opportunity to build a brand new house, then it should be contemporary, why build it to look like an old house? especially when there are no other houses nearby.

CoolShoeshine · 07/12/2021 22:17

@MrsPelligrinoPetrichor I think you’ve hit the nail on the head - it’s going to end up as some sort of country club/boutique b&b. It seems far too big for them alone, especially when the older boys will probably leave home or go to uni before long.

hivemindneeded · 07/12/2021 22:23

It's ghastly. The block tacked on to one side is totally out of proportion with the main house. Very MacMansion.

nope - quite the opposite - the flowers are delicious. I had it in my old garden and have brought some bulbs with me to the new, just fingers crossed I get enough to actually harvest this year!

I don't know why I watch this programme - I find Sarah and Graham so irritating with their little staged battles and the pretence that there is any danger of them overrunning their budget. The choices and purchases they make don't seem to indicate any real shortage of money. I really dislike the faux styling too and think a more interesting contemporary house, fitting in with the countryside around it, would have been so much better. The only bits I enjoy are the snippets on nature and the environment.

I thought the dark staircase with pink carpet was quite ugly and it seemed to leave a very awkward unusable space underneath. The baby grand piano looked squeezed in, right next to the radiator, which I would expect to be really bad for it.

@Bluesheep8

*What happened with Rise Hall in Yorkshire?

Did they just give up on it, because it was too big a project?*

They hired it out as a wedding venue then sold it

Didn't they have big problems with the planners who wouldn't give permission for rise hall to be a wedding venue?

I live near Rise Hall. She was hiring it out as a wedding venue. I've been to a couple of weddings there and it is lovely. She's sold it to an events/wedding planning company who are continuing to use it as a wedding venue.*

@sofato5miles

The drive is rather ...drivey
Ha that’s what I thought
Lanique · 08/12/2021 11:22

It's hideous. I can't believe that a so-called 'property expert' commissioned this monstrosity. I also can't believe the place got permission and would hazard a guess that some form of back hander has been done with the local council, or the council have been unprofessionally starstruck.

And don't get me started on the dreadful, fake, contrived Somerset accent of the narrator Angry. Not sure the programme could patronise the locals any more than this.

MissAmbrosia · 09/12/2021 20:07

I LOVE Graham! Remain to be convinced about the house.

awaynboilyurheid · 09/12/2021 20:47

It’s a very tone deaf programme especially since COVID many are struggling and to watch them with their “problems” it’s just too annoying!
I switched off quite quickly, used to like her but gone right off her and her hubby is a pain.

LadyEloise1 · 11/12/2021 15:12

I just want to go and tidy up The book shelf in Grahams "study". It's a total mess !!!

I still don't understand why they ruined the symmetry of the house with the two wooden add ons either side.
Can someone tell me why they did that please ?

TowandaForever · 14/12/2021 21:51

Whenever her children misbehave she just laughs.

They're teens, they don't need disciplining ,they're really nice kids.
AngelicaSchuylerAndHerSisters · 14/12/2021 23:28

They are such a likeable family - relaxed and fun. They seem lovely. And the dog is gorgeous

Agree to all of the above especially the ‘narrator’ !

RevolvingPivot · 15/12/2021 00:05

Yep the worst part about the programme is the narrators voice!!

The home schooling scene was so funny. They will probably all have continued with their private tutoring lessons online.

Mintine · 15/12/2021 11:03

It’s not mean at all to comment on a tv programme, I agree op.
The house is hideous and it makes me laugh when they mention what a tight budget they have and then get light fittings hand made, by a company who makes like fittings for Buckingham palace.
Yes, the kids seem nice, as does Dickson, but it’s all about getting your family in on the act, for the cash bonanza.
I’ll keep watching as it it’s very entertaining and despite the above, I do like Sarah Beeney

Mintine · 15/12/2021 11:04

It’s Dickon, not Dickson!

SwedishEdith · 15/12/2021 18:06

Oh, I love hating watching this - she's hardly going to care what people think of her Sylvanian Hotel house.

The house they're in now looks much more comfortable and cosy to live in than this one.

As her brother is married to her husband's sister, I wonder what their kids' DNA analysis would look like if uploaded to Ancestry.

I didn’t know Diccon’s wife is Graham’s sister!

They alway describe them as “Sarah’s brother Diccon and his wife, ?name? Come to help …….”
