New thread.

NO SPOILERS

I missed Rhys's glaringly obvious mistake. Must have been distracted by the dreadful timing. He was so far ahead of the music at times.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 21/11/2021 17:10

I feel for Tilly in some ways.

It seems like someone is trying to make a star of her, she has also done Celebrity Masterchef Australia recently

Regardless, the dance was atrocious

Cabaret Chicago La La Land Beauty and the Beast Guys and Dolls Evita Singing in the Rain Mary Poppins Returns The Muppet Movie The Wizard of Oz Hairspray Dreamgirls Annie Fiddler and the Roof Into the Woods Little Shop of Horrors Les Miserables Moulin Rouge Once Fame Gentlemen prefers Blondes Mamma Mia

Biggest issue is that Strictly have used so many musical numbers, either in a 'normal' week or movie week crossover.

So - aside from Six, Rent, Hamilton, Evita and Oklahoma - there's not many that haven't been plundered already?

GertrudeBElion · 21/11/2021 17:12

@iklboo

Ahhhhh. Gotcha. Yes. The love child of Luke Evans & Jason Manford, stepped through a rip in the time space continuum from about 1940.
Exactly that Grin
SequinsandStiIettos · 21/11/2021 17:17

Rhys's mistake was 1.24

although I did wonder at 0.37 as well. I was sure he was going to nail the jive after his Charleston so am almost hoping he has to do it again so I can see him do it properly - I chucked him a vote out of sympathy though as it was so fast. Wish he had done a cc later and done Hamilton instead tbh
IReallyLikeCrows · 21/11/2021 17:20

Re Tilly, I have bashed her in the past. I don't like her father - he may be a very nice man but his TV persona does my nut in - and I felt that she was just another not really famous person from off of the socials but this time one who wouldn't even be a not really famous person on the socials if it wasn't for her dad who seems to appear in the audience or by video every week. I was not a fan. Unreasonable? Absolutely but then again all of our dislikes are unreasonable.

Anyway! Over recent weeks I've not been so stubborn that I've refused to see that she's been improving. Still not my favourite dancer, definitely not one of the better dancers, but she has improved and hats off to her for that. I wouldn't vote for her but I'd hate to see her knocked out before someone who isn't very good - ahem, Dan, ahem - because she is better than that. This week though? I get that the dance was done well, I knew it was supposed to be stompy while watching it and yet it did very little for me. I expected it to get decent marks but 40?! That's why people are a bit "WTAF!". It's not Tilly bashing, it's a what the fuck were the judges thinking clusterfuck of confusion.

N.b. Dan. I stand by my opinion that he is now the least good (as of before we find out who's left this evening) dancer in the competition. Some might argue that Tom or Rhys or even Tilly are worse than him. They aren't. They all have more talent. He has worked hard, he has improved but there is only so far he can go and his Charleston proved that. It was perfectly fine, perfectly too slow, perfectly vanilla without an ounce of feeling or unbridled joy. I want him to go not because I "hate" him or think he's a horrid person, but because he's been the least good dancer for quite some time now and the longer he stays in the more people who are better than him will go. I want him to be in the dance-off this week but I won't be at all surprised if he isn't because he is clearly pulling in the votes.

SequinsandStiIettos · 21/11/2021 17:21

Wouldn't say Tilly was atrocious at all - she was in sync with Nikita and it was a decent nod to the original. For someone without performing experience or prior dance muscle memory, and with a song that was lesser known, she did really well.

Fenelladepompom · 21/11/2021 17:22

Thanks. I do remember that now. It was riddled with errors though tbh. Shame he cant calm things down as I like his style and he seems like a lovely chap.
SequinsandStiIettos · 21/11/2021 17:23

Plus - in the same way I doubt Jamie would have chosen ETAJ last year to jive to, she did well with a shoehorned theme.

IReallyLikeCrows · 21/11/2021 17:25

It was good watching Rhys again. I had noticed the mistake but wasn't one hundred percent sure it was a mistake, although I should have been given his leg went the wrong way! The other reason I wasn't sure was because it was over in a moment and he carried on as though nothing had happened which always impresses me. I'd probably sit down and cry or something.

I'd also forgotten that the cameras did something that we so rarely see on SCD, they zoomed in on the footwork for a while and it was glorious!

I think the use of Edelweiss was a nod to the fact that Kai played one of the middle Von Trapp children (Rolf) in the 1965 original The Sound Of Music

Except Rolf wasn’t one of the Von Trapp children, he was the blond delivery boy turned Nazi who danced around the bandstand with the oldest girl at the start and blew the whistle when the family were hiding from the Nazis at the end (yes, I know... I’ve seen TSOM far too many times) Blush

MaggieFS · 21/11/2021 17:57

I like Tilly and I didn't know anything of her before this started. I don't buy into the Gordon/fix myths. BUT I just don't understand how that was a 40. And it's hard not to be frustrated by that fact she got 40 when the implications are so significant in terms of dance off etc.

I also don't see what the 'new' dances bring to Strictly anyway? Happy to have my eyes opened though? Just a bunch of dances which seem to be scored against even more vague criteria than the ballroom and Latin - which in themselves are hardly an exact science.

Outrageous! He would only ever be a good guy!

Me too. I've seen it 31 times at the cinema, not to mention all the DVD and TV viewing. Blush
EsmaCannonball · 21/11/2021 18:01

High Society is another musical that hasn't been exhausted by Strictly. Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?, True Love, Now You Has Jazz, all songs that would work. John and Johannes could have been Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra doing Well Did You Evah!

The more of you who diss Kai, the fewer of you I'm going to have to invite to a lonely country mansion on a stormy night and bump off one by one. He will be mine, all mine!

EsmaCannonball · 21/11/2021 18:06

I don't think the producers fixed Tilly's scores to please Gordon Ramsay. I think they fixed them to generate a bit more excitement around the Results Show. She was pretty much a nailed-on goner but now there's a chance of a shock boot. I think they are very aware that the latter stages of this series risk being very predictable.

Runningupthecurtains · 21/11/2021 18:17

I've just had a mental run through the stage musicals that I've seen and I can't remember any of the following being used by Strictly (someone with a far better memory than me will no doubt be along to correct me) Barnum, Starlight Express, Cats, Blood Brothers, Miss Saigon, Spamalot, Sweeney Todd. I'm not a massive musicals fan but there seem to be untapped one out there, especially when you factor movies too there are loads of classic Hollywood musicals that haven't been done but there seems to be a limited pool that get revisited.

QueenFool · 21/11/2021 18:17

I've rewinded to watch Rose and Giovanni again and I can't see his mistake at all.

I'm terrible at spotting them. Are these step mistakes really subtle, I never see them? I'd only notice if someone fell over!

I think I'd like Tom to go tonight, or Rhys. With Rhys, I'm watching the same dance every week.

EvilRingahBitch · 21/11/2021 18:22

Hamilton is a big one waiting to happen. You could do a great Street Commercial CC to My Shot, or a waltz to Helpless (I think it's 3/4?). I think South Pacific, Oklahoma and Carousel have been underused.

What annoys me most is the producers' tendency to blur the lines between musicals and movies weeks, so they put stage musicals which have had an unconvincing film version into movie week and Disney movies which have an unconvincing stage version into Musicals Week.

EvilRingahBitch · 21/11/2021 18:28

Whilst it's strictly an opera not a musical I'd love to see someone have a stab at a foxtrot to It Ain't Necessarily So or Summertime.

SequinsandStiIettos · 21/11/2021 18:29

typo - Ranvir - waitress

SequinsandStiIettos · 21/11/2021 18:31

I am amazed nobody's used Summertime ERB

Barnum, Starlight Express, Cats, Blood Brothers, Miss Saigon, Spamalot, Sweeney Todd.
(I think only memory from Cats running but I wouldn#t bet my house on it!)

SequinsandStiIettos · 21/11/2021 18:38

I'd have lost my house...not for musicals week admittedly, but Jackie and Anton did dance to ALOTBSOL (still not sure why! Grin)

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 21/11/2021 18:48

I think Burn from Hamilton could be a good Tango
