Strictly '21 #8: And 8 would be quite high enough for most of the dances this week...

It was a bit miserable wasn't it? Hopefully the results show probdance will be more fun!

I totally agree with some pp's - I really did not like Judi and her sob story this week. Seemed like it was shoehorned in to gain votes...particularly as it made it very difficult for the judges to truly criticise the dance due to the whole back story VT Hmm

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 19/10/2021 13:38

I don't really remember "tribute dances" in previous series.

There was the occasional "my grandma loved the show" or similar, and obviously they mentioned it a bit with Debbie McGee, but everybody knew Paul Daniels.

Yep, and the Lovely Debbeh was genuinely a talented dancer, so didn't need sympathy votes.

It's (sadly) notable that the two people who have gone for the sad back story are/were weak dancers. It looks contrived to me.

EsmaCannonball · 19/10/2021 15:06

Ugo is back ....... but he's got a rumba. I guess they've worked out that would be the lowest impact on his back. Sara also has a rumba, and Judi has a cha cha cha to Let's Get Physical by Olivia Newton-John which ...... I mean, I think we can all predict the level of comedy cringe in that one.

So, Judi for the dance-off, almost certainly. Will the viewers give Ugo the sympathy vote or will the show steer us into quietly putting him out of his misery?

SoupDragon · 19/10/2021 15:25

I don't really remember "tribute dances" in previous series.

There have definitely been "tributes" where they say "my grandma loved the waltz/foxtrot" or some such stuff. Or "this was granddad's favourite song".

Yep, there were but not to the extent of the emotional overload this week - her face when they went to the judges comments was so sad, they couldn't criticise her Confused
IntermittentParps · 19/10/2021 16:42

@southcarolina

Does anyone else think that Antons comments are a bit 'me me me' sometimes? (Granted mixed with very specific technical advice). This week was better but last week I felt like he just spoke about his experience of each dance rather than advice for several couples
Agree, he's treating it like the Anton Show. I find him tiresome. Pity, because he does sometimes say constructive things, you just have to nod through a long long anecdote/flight of fancy first, like talking to some uncle at a wedding.

I absolutely love Rose and Giovanni. She's so good, he's teaching her so well. I love their partnership.

I felt for Judi. Such a heartfelt dance for her, but she's clearly not popular.
Don't mind Greg going; he was a bit pompous.
I'm missing Oti.
Tom looks like a kid going to the school dance dressed by his mum.
Nancy and thingy are beyond infuriating.
Like Sarah, largely because I love Aljaz; such a gent.
Can't think of anyone else. Lots of them are unmemorable this year. IMO nothing will ever top Bill Bailey winning it.

Are they actively trying to embarrass Judi by giving her that? It smacks of 'laughing at the fat one'. Ugly behaviour if so.
iklboo · 19/10/2021 17:14

A lumbar rumba? Oooft.

iklboo · 19/10/2021 17:18

I turn from cart horse to elegant thoroughbred if I put heels on 😂

I'm the exact opposite Soupy 😄

MyCatEatsPrawnCrackers · 19/10/2021 17:25

I wonder if they'll be brave enough to give John and Johannes a rumba?

Katya and Nicola did one, I think? Can't remember if it was 'sexy' or not. Then again, the man/woman pairing of Karen and Chris thingy did a rumba and I remember them saying they agreed in advance they didn't want to do a sexy one. So they could go sexy, but if they don't it wouldn't be a first.
Claymorekick · 19/10/2021 17:35

A John and Johannes rumba would be off the scale in terms of chemistry Grin

I pray for it daily.
JacquelineCarlyle · 19/10/2021 18:53

I don't think their rumba would be good as their legs and bums are far too big and chunky, so I don't think you'd get the nice, sexy, close-knit leg work that makes the rumba so sexy.

EsmaCannonball · 19/10/2021 18:58

Flavia is great on Choreography Corner; actual critique and advice instead of 'great, lovely, nice.'

Graziano with his hair tied back is the spitting image of a young Phil Oakey. A bit of eyeliner and lipstick and he could join a Human League tribute band.

As I said on the last thread, I would feel a bit voyeuristic watching if they did a sexy one.

I dread the rumbas on Strictly. They're almost always cringeworthy. The celebs (generally) just aren't good enough.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 19/10/2021 19:23

@EineReiseDurchDieZeit

I seem to recall Lisa Reilly dancing with Robin Windsor pre weight loss being very lightfooted 🤔
She was - even from the start she was very agile and right on her feet. Caame across as a lovely girl, too, and very hardworking - I really enjoyed watching her.
CaveMum · 19/10/2021 19:30

I think we had the conversation about what makes a Rumba sexy. If you’ve got the technique it really doesn’t matter what you look like.

I remember posting this video of Shirley dancing a Rumba after giving a lecture with a, ahem, larger gentleman who looked fantastic. Granted he was ex-Champion Michael Chapman Wink

SchadenfreudePersonified · 19/10/2021 21:08

I am eternally grateful to you for that clip Cavemum - it is one of my favourites and I've watched it loads of times since you first posted it when all round heroes green fields and i had the body of a sylph

SchadenfreudePersonified · 19/10/2021 21:08

*here was, not heroes

Notospaday · 19/10/2021 21:32

What a difference. She really explained and demonstrated some of the points the judges had made and how the dancers could improve. I've always liked her and she was terrific on CC.
She'd be a great judge.

Bobholll · 19/10/2021 21:51

Me too @MyCatEatsPrawnCrackers 😂

Do you think it’s weird to have people constantly telling you you have incredible chemistry with someone who isn’t your other half 🙈😂 I always think it must be a bit bizarre..

[/quote] Oh gosh I love this so much!!
CaveMum · 19/10/2021 22:21

@SchadenfreudePersonified you’re very welcome. It is a beautiful routine, and a perfect example of how a Rumba can (and should) be soft and romantic rather than “sexy” (or smutty as most of the SCD routine’s seem to end up).

I am very conscious that I post the same old videos every year, I feel like Uncle Albert (Only Fools and Horses ref for you there!) sometimes and that I should be sat here in my rocking chair starting all my stories with “During the war…” 🤣🤣
