Off piste a little bit ...but did anyone see the Paul O'Grady show last night .
Arlene Philips was on ...looking amazing at ...78 !!!

I think so ginger because women could not always find enough male partners available. Sure polka has posted links and mentioned this before; and then you have Argentinian twins Nicolas and German Filipeli.
You also have LGBTGI visibility with the pink jukebox trophy.
I find all of it interesting and exciting because I like the fluidity of changing leaders and followers.

QI sausage fingers

SequinsandStiIettos · 26/09/2021 22:26

Yes, she looked great.

thelastgoldeneagle · 26/09/2021 22:27

I enjoyed the show!! Posting late, but had to post to say how awful Shirley was. Perving over the men. That awful comment she made about the celeb black guy in cerise suit about being able to see all his body parts moving, even parts he didn't intend to move - just yuk.

Comefromaway · 26/09/2021 22:27
@covetingthepreciousthings I disagree. If care home staff are expected to have them in order to do their job, why should the professionals be any different here?
Thankfully we don’t live in a dictatorship. And being a professional dancer is hardly akin to working in a care home.

Tilly is possibly only single jabbed, my dd is 19 (born 2001) and her cohort became eligible for their first jab abound May ish time. Several of her friends couldn’t get it done until late July/August as they either caught Covid or were isolating.

Yes, though doesn’t it seem crazy that we’ve had to wait for same-sex pairings to mix up the lead/follow. Is there any reason a mixed sex pair couldn’t play about with those roles too? In fact I wonder if we might see that this series as J&J win praise for how they’re swapping roles in their dances
ilovesooty · 26/09/2021 22:44

I was out last night so watched it today. AJ is the best dancer but won't win, just as Alexandra Burke and Natalie Gumede didn't.

I thought Gio and Rose did a great job. I'd love him to win at last.

I loathed Anton as a contestant but he's surprisingly (to me) good as a judge.

SequinsandStiIettos · 26/09/2021 22:56

But Alexandra and Natalie were ringers - so much dance experience that everyone already knew about (whereas Jill, Kara, Caroline kept theirs more under wraps). Only woman to win was Alesha?
AJ is a beginner and has been extremely vocal about that fact.
She won't win if she plateaus or if excited women vote en masse with their ovaries for Adam but as a novice, she has a better chance than Alexandra and Natalie did. The only thing against her atm is the marmite reaction to her Northern vowels but she has had so many supportive tweets, comments on insta and on youtube, that I think she is a strong contender.

SequinsandStiIettos · 26/09/2021 22:57

Only woman of colour, that should say

SequinsandStiIettos · 26/09/2021 22:58

Also, she is the best dancer for that style. We haven't seen her do ballroom yet. I hope she can do both.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 26/09/2021 23:05

It's because the steps are codified. I'm not sure there's actually a specific rule against it, but because when you go onto the floor you present yourself as a lead and a follow, then you do the steps the way they're described for a lead and follow.

I think it would definitely hold true for restricted step competitions (by switching you're doing something that isn't defined in the steps you're allowed to do), in open choreography it might be ok? The big issue I can see in ballroom though is that you're not allowed to break hold, so you'd have to find clever ways of switching.

GingerAndTheBiscuits · 26/09/2021 23:09

I guess I was thinking more in Strictly terms than proper competition terms - I’m assuming strictly breaks all sorts of codes that wouldn’t be allowed in formal competition?

SequinsandStiIettos · 26/09/2021 23:18

I think the nearest we had was Kelly Brook nicking Brenda's cape to swish in her paso Grin cos women should be allowed to be matadors in the name of feminism (am paraphrasing) Wink

Kevin & Stacey did in their Doctor Who routine. I remember the fuss about it.

SequinsandStiIettos · 26/09/2021 23:19

Oh and didn't Stacey lead at the end of her Dr. Who tango when she overcame the cyberman aka tin man Kev Grin

SequinsandStiIettos · 26/09/2021 23:20

Beat me to it iklboo Wine

GingerAndTheBiscuits · 26/09/2021 23:23

Thanks both, I don’t remember that one so will have to dig it out the archive

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 26/09/2021 23:27

No real reason not to in Strictly (in early series I think the rules were probably tighter than they are now).

Some of it is just mechanics though — underarm turns turning the taller person under wouldn't look very good if they had to duck and the lead had to really stretch up.

OP posts:
PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 26/09/2021 23:32

There's definitely been at least one floor spin with a male pro being spun as well, but I can't think who.

Just caught up haven't read all of this thread and the end of last thread.

A great first night! I can't wait for next week GlitterballGlitterballGlitterball

SequinsandStiIettos · 26/09/2021 23:43

Ooh that was Kev too. What's he like?!
He got Susan Calman as Wonder Woman to hold him as he did a very dodgy floor spin in their samba.

SequinsandStiIettos · 26/09/2021 23:56

Here you go!

(1.40) (1.26) (0.48)

Len hated Kelly having the cape cos the woman is meant to be the cape or the bull. You also had Gio and Michelle's paso where she discarded her cape/skirt and took on a matador role/mirroring Gio's movements sadly no knee walks although I do remember Lindsay Sterling doing some in her paso with Mark

(1 min in) (1.09 joyous routine - she had a floating rib too at the time)

I thought AJ was a great dancer and she is - I'll have a fiver on her winning but her voice annoys me - I loved the dance to Blue Monday
