Conor Swindells still the best thing in this (Adam).

Do not always agree with Lucy Mangan but think here her review is fair.

Only seen the first two episodes and honestly it's so distracting how the "kids" look older than the headteacher....
I want them to swap all the storylines so all we see is Gillian Anderson and Jacob :)

Sidge · 20/09/2021 19:59

I still love it but yes season 3 has become a bit more “right on” shoehorning all possible permutations into the show.

It still has some sweet and moving moments but has lost a little of its sparkle, for me.

Adam is brilliant though. Just watched episode 3 and DD and I were howling at his conversation pieces at the bowling!

Mooserp · 20/09/2021 20:09

I'm still enjoying it but it's nowhere near as good as the first series. Adam is great, the bowling scenes were funny 😄

I've not watched them all yet but feeling sorry for Ruby

TheGriffle · 20/09/2021 20:53

Ncuti Gatwa who plays Eric is a beautiful human isnt he. Just on episode 3 and I loved him dancing and cartwheeling over his bed. I love this show so much.

bonfireheart · 20/09/2021 22:42

Adam reminds me so much of Josh O'connor in God's Own Country, and given that Josh just won an Emmy that's pretty good.

Bagelsandbrie · 20/09/2021 22:45

I adore this series but feel this seasons lost it a bit. The whole uniform thing and pantomime baddie head feels distracting.

Yes. I love him. He’s amazing.

Gorgeous!! ✨

Just watched the first 2 episodes of season 3, we love this show so much!!

The men playing Adam and his Dad have been so brilliantly cast as believable Father and Son, Eric is a riot of joy and I love the relationship between Otis and his Mum.

Definitely here for more of the Jakob and the baby storyline though.

foxgoosefinch · 20/09/2021 23:00

Just watching this at the moment, and though the series wasn’t exactly realist, it feels like this season has lost that delicate balance between realistic and stylised. The new head thing isn’t very convincing (though in my 40s I find myself sympathising with the head tbh, especially on the non-binary thing 😂), and the whole conceit of it being a show about sex where most of the kids aren’t having sex has completely gone now, so it’s getting very predictable and caricatured.

Also the main thing for me is that in the first two seasons, which were charming and funny, the actors mostly actually looked like they really could be sixth form kids. Now it’s clear that they’re all in their early twenties and they just look too old to be teenagers. It’s been three years since the first series, so they’re dragging it out way too long (oughtn’t they to be moving on from school by now?) They ought to have been introducing more new characters, too, though I appreciate they were filming during Covid so that was presumably difficult with casting.

Ultimately though, it just feels v weird now to be watching something that’s apparently set in the present day, but pretending the pandemic doesn’t exist. I think so much has changed in the last 18 months that we’re living through a very fast transition between the 2010s and the new 2020s. Even the show’s aesthetic, which looked fresh and retro-fun in 2019, now suddenly looks dated and really Milennial. Teenagers aren’t listening to eighties pop and retro rock and wearing fitted prints any more. It just suddenly looks wrong, which is quite startling!

Chosennone · 21/09/2021 06:57

I actually still really love it. The way we have seen Ruby's vulnerabilities and Isaac's character development. Adam and Eric's relationship etc. Thebmissed opportunities/lost messages between Marve and Otis. All fab.
But yes the kids look old now. The stylised American look is still cool but quite distracting at times. Every single house/;static/,shop/bowling alley is 80s. It is still cool but quite try hard.
Jean and Jakob are amazing.

I have a crush on Jakob BlushGrin

I’ve just binged all three seasons in three days. (Finished about 4.am this morning, so today will be slow.) I’d never watched it before.

The whole thing is so staggeringly beautiful to look at - I really do feel I’m devouring the landscape, the buildings and the planes of Eric’s face ceaselessly.

But - I did find S3 unsatisfactory compared to the first two. Won’t spoil, I hope, to say they dispensed with the appearance on-screen of two peripheral characters - parents - whose performances and presence I’d enjoyed.

Worse - the very worst - for some inexplicable reason they completely isolated three black characters - two of whom had interacted with everyone in the first two seasons, one of whom is new - and had them pretty much only interact with each other. Stupidly and pointlessly and - it completely ruined my appreciation for the show. It was as if they decided to kowtow to US sensibilities. I Don’t Know Why.

The use of (relatively) ancient actors to play teens was really quite distracting. Their faces were too solid! And they mostly lacked that skittish quality teenagers have.

Eric’s trip was surprisingly well done - though there’s a wedding that was too quiet and sparsely populated. It’s true he and Adam are outstandingly brilliantly acted.

I’m very sorry but I don’t think I like Gillian Anderson’s acting. Great presence and wears clothes magnificently, but too … exaggerated.

How can there possibly be a S4 when all the school pupils will be about thirty?

Me too Blush

I find him a bit scary, but he has amazing eyes!

EdmontinaDonsAutumnalHues · 21/09/2021 11:20

He is very handsome …

Also a bit scary.

ClaudiaWankleman · 21/09/2021 11:47

I really enjoyed the series (we binged it over a couple of long evenings!).

Aimee's discussion with Jean about her bus experience last year really got to me and I wished we had been able to see more. It felt like I was in therapy (which maybe I need!) and was such a catharsis. Her storyline with Kyle was very subtle but one I could really identify with.

The scene with the sexual health nurse discussing PrEP was also excellent. 30 seconds of TV doing more for education than the current curriculum does in 7 years.

Bagelsandbrie · 21/09/2021 13:01

Love the Jakob fan club! Grin

I think Adam is my favourite character. I’m really enjoying seeing his development across the seasons. It’s amazing how much he looks like his dad in the series! Great casting as said upthread.

bonfireheart · 21/09/2021 15:23

Not even "early twenties", the actor who plays Eric is 28!

Pinkbonbon · 22/09/2021 01:55

Am I the only one that is actually really hoping Maeve ends up with Isaac ultimately? I just thought their chemistry was better than her and otis this season tbh.

I guess that would also leave otis free to fall for the queen bee girl (who's name I forget) that confessed she loved him. Which I'm OK with because I think she could learn and grow a lot from him and she could teach him to be more confident in himself.

Pinkbonbon · 22/09/2021 01:56

Also, isacc really reminds me of James mcavoy. Which is funny because the actress who plays maeves mum is mcavoys ex wife.

EdmontinaDonsAutumnalHues · 22/09/2021 06:37

It’s true, there’s no chemistry at all between Maeve and Otis! Though they work well as friends. (It doesn’t help that one of them is pretty much the only person in the show who looks vaguely teenage, while the other might easily be in their thirties.)

Isaac has the most beautiful facial expressions sometimes, and he really draws one in. He’s certainly witty enough to keep Maeve interested. But how could anyone ever trust someone who did what he did?

Bagelsandbrie · 22/09/2021 07:47

I really loved Isaac in this season. I think what he did with the message was awful but I think like M he’s a very damaged soul and I think we could see that this season. I really enjoyed the kissing scene between him and M. It was oddly quite moving….!

EasterIssland · 22/09/2021 07:51

Only on 3rd episode … but I love Eric

There’s a wonderful Financial Times article on clothes in Sex Education:

www.ft.com/content/07763d74-ef82-4683-8dcc-5be1bde9787e (Google the headline if access is difficult.)

I was particularly fascinated by the revelation of where Hope’s clothes were sourced from. The way they’re styled on her manages to make perfectly nice, simple items look like military supplies. And I’ve sometimes seen Nancy Mac linked here, had a look, and shuddered. I may have to revise my opinions.
