Conor Swindells still the best thing in this (Adam).

Do not always agree with Lucy Mangan but think here her review is fair.

Tbf though, Isaac owned up to what he did. That's a decent kid who made a mistake because he was scared to lose someone he liked. And then was brave enough to own up to it because he felt bad for what he did. I could absolutely forgive that.

Also maeve did something to hurt him too (in season 3) and she didn't even tell him so technically she is worse.

rosegoldwatcher · 22/09/2021 15:04

I'd never heard of this show - until I hit the 'Play Me Something' button on Netflix.
Have now watched season 1 and a bit of episode 1 of season 2.

Being a bit ancient myself, I think I like it mostly for Jean and Jakob; have adored Mikael Persbrandt since Beck.

bonfireheart · 22/09/2021 16:44

There were two issues for me in this series compared to the first two.

There is very little lightness this season. I felt so sad for all of them, isaac, Ruby, Aimee, Adam, otis, maeve, Ola, Cal...they even managed to break Eric and Lily. I felt almost bad watching teeangers with such sad stories...and add in the headteachers IVF story and it was all too much.

I really really really don't think Otis and Maeve should be together. They're boring together. zero chemistry, like they're siblings. She loses her spark when she's with him. It's all so predictable. The scenes with her and Isaac were amazing (and main female character falls for friend in a wheelchair, never done before , could have been different than cliche of falling for dull Otis).

For me, Adam stole this series. And would love for him and intellectual Rahim to slowly become closer. Although that poo in sock storyline was unforgiveable!!

HungryHippo11 · 22/09/2021 16:51

Ultimately though, it just feels v weird now to be watching something that’s apparently set in the present day, but pretending the pandemic doesn’t exist.
I could not disagree more. I don't want to watch a show which is trying to shoehorn in social distancing, especially a show like this. What could they do - have the kids sexting each other or Jean doing therapy by Zoom? Oh Eric isn't in this episode because he is self isolating. It would be rubbish!

Mooserp · 22/09/2021 17:09

I like that it isn't really set in any particular time or place.

I also don't want Otis and Maeve to be together (haven't watched the whole series yet so not sure if they are!) She has always seemed so much older than him and it feels weird, like you say , they are more like siblings.

I do feel it's gone a bit far with the sex references, songs etc. Would have liked it to cover some different aspects of teenage angst and also, as said above, some lighter moments.

One minor point that I was surprised/frustrated by was the lack of umbilical cord, considering the show seems set on correcting myths about sex, body parts etc.

I may

Mooserp · 22/09/2021 17:10

(ignore the rogue 'I may' )

GreenTeaBlackCoffeeAndRedWine · 22/09/2021 17:11

It was very refreshing to watch something that didn't mention Covid even once. There's so much shite in the news we need stuff like this.

I enjoyed it, although as someone that bit younger I liked how the students stood up for what they believe in, especially about their identities.

GreenTeaBlackCoffeeAndRedWine · 22/09/2021 17:13

Although I do think they should be moving on from the school by now surely and navigating the adult world.

GreatestHits · 22/09/2021 17:34

I really liked Season 3. Even the pantomime baddy headteacher Grin Felt sooo sorry for Lily, who reminds me of my autistic daughter. Liked the new character Cal. Loved the Ruby storyline, how she's a completely different person at home, and how emotionally vulnerable she feels showing her true feelings. The Otis and Maeve storyline is getting a bit boring now admittedly.

bonfireheart · 22/09/2021 17:57

I liked the new headteacher.

And thank fuck no mention of global pandemic.

Won't be long until the students look older than Jean and Jacob !

Mooserp · 22/09/2021 19:45

Just watched the last episode, which I think was the best of series. Quite a lot of emotional moments. 😢

Can't wait for the next one!

Cookiedough123 · 22/09/2021 20:39

I absolutely loved Aimee, Ruby and Adam in this series. I think it would be such a good show if it was a bit like Skins. Where they replace the characters every few series with fresh young faces and new storylines. I feel like they only have a season left although I have still really enjoyed it and gutted I've watched them all now!

Bagelsandbrie · 22/09/2021 22:10

Oh gosh I just watched the last episode and I have cried..! So much. Blush

The actor that plays Adam is just so brilliant.

TheGriffle · 23/09/2021 09:57

I finished watching it last night. Adam is a fantastic actor and I can see him and Rahim getting together.

I wish they had explored Adam and his dads relationship, they really need to sit down and talk to each other and his dad needs to apologise greatly. And they really are the best father/son believeable duo.

SPOILER IF YOU HAVEN’T WATCHED IT ALL:

From Jeans “Oh shit” at the paternity test I’m guessing the baby isn’t Jakob’s which will be devastating for him and Ola. I thought she’d slept with her ex husband last season so I guess it’s probably his. I love her and Jakob though, I think they make a great couple.

They didn’t really leave anyone on a high note apart from Ola and Lily and Vivian and her bloke everyone else split up just about!

Mooserp · 23/09/2021 13:17

SPOILERS

Surely Adam and his Dad will get close in the next series (which I imagine will be the infal one?) They are heading that way, both becoming much nicer people.

I feel very maternal towards Adam and it was so nice to see him smile (way too overinvested in his storyline!)

I think the baby must be exH's. I haven't rewatched the 2nd series, but I was surprised in this one that she was so certain it was Jakob's.

Bagelsandbrie · 23/09/2021 13:27

I guess the baby could be the one who kept calling her Mum, the younger man who joked if it was his..?!

ImInStealthMode · 23/09/2021 15:57

Trying to skim these comments as I'm only half way through series 3, but in answer to the fact they're all looking a bit older than teen now I'm not sure that really matters to me.

I'm already watching with a degree of suspended disbelief; are they in the UK or the US? Is it the 80s or the present day? I think the slightly removed from reality sense of the whole production style means it doesn't really matter if they look 17 or 24.

(and let's face it, I happily pretended the Inbetweeners cast were all 16 long after they stopped looking it, and the show wasn't nearly as good).

SaltedCaramelIcedLatte · 23/09/2021 18:11

I am quite sad that I binged it now...I absolutely love Eric

ImInStealthMode · 23/09/2021 20:48

bonfireheart · 23/09/2021 20:56

Oh wow, he is so handsome!

foxgoosefinch · 23/09/2021 20:56

Apparently he has an X-files tattoo which they have to keep covered up. Very meta Grin

xanderllama · 23/09/2021 23:21

I really enjoyed the episode that was partly set around Eric’s time in Nigeria, although it didn’t really fit the show’s regular aesthetic it was still a great watch. This show has some very talented actors of the future in it!

EdmontinaDonsAutumnalHues · 24/09/2021 06:53

Magnificent that they did it relatively well, xanderllama - I didn’t spot a single gross cliché. Though the roads were suspiciously empty, and the party, as I noted above, rather sparsely packed with guests. But I guess the story didn’t really cover traffic jams.

The club scene was epic. (Though possibly a little tame.)

I’m not sure I’ve come across that exact set of circumstances portrayed on TV before - a person discovering their true, free self in a place demonstrably known to be much more repressive than their home location. It was a wonderfully knotty, intersectional point of philosophical debate.

Bagelsandbrie · 24/09/2021 06:57

I thought the Eric thing could have gone a different way with the Nigeria storyline - I thought he was going to realise how Adam felt having to repress himself around his Dad etc having had a taste of having to do that in Nigeria and come back having a renewed understanding of him…. But that didn’t happen Grin
