Starts tomorrow at Farrell plays Henry Drax in the drama, a harpooner and brutish killer whose amorality has been shaped to fit the harshness of his world, who will set sail on a whaling expedition to the Arctic with Patrick Sumner, a disgraced ex-army surgeon who signs up as the ship’s doctor.

Hoping to escape the horrors of his past, Sumner finds himself on an ill-fated journey with a murderous psychopath. In search of redemption, his story becomes a harsh struggle for survival in the Arctic wasteland."[1]

In Hull, 1859, Patrick Sumner, a cashiered Irish army surgeon boards the whaling ship Volunteer as its ships surgeon under Captain Brownlee.

He becomes acquainted with the rest of the crew, including the vulgar first mate Cavendish, whalers Jones, Otto and the especially thuggish and murderous harpooner Henry Drax.

Working with the ship's financier and whaling company head Baxter in an insurance scam

Absolutely cannot wait to watch this tonight!

Boredsillyathome · 10/09/2021 10:14

@Blondeshavemorefun I watched The Terror a couple years ago, really good very atmospheric and creepy, and brutal in parts, the cast are fantastic and honestly watching it makes you feel cold, can't imagine what it must be like filming in those conditions!

Blondeshavemorefun · 10/09/2021 10:20

Yah. Thought was going to be alone

Looks good and fab cast

What year is this set in?

theworstoftimes · 10/09/2021 10:25

Incidentally, my husband is from Hull and his family used to be whalers

Blondeshavemorefun · 10/09/2021 10:55

1859 I think

I gave up on the book, had promise but not engaging, hope the adaptation is better

Janaih · 10/09/2021 10:57

Slightly confused as to why this is on BBC2 but looking forward to it!

MorrisZapp · 10/09/2021 12:03

Can't wait for this! Calm down Farrell fans, it's all about Jack McConnell for me.

He was simply superb in Godless, which to this day remains criminally overlooked. I was gobsmacked to see the annoying Lady Mary from Downton Abbey in a lead role but she was a revelation. Even bigger revelation was finding out that McConnell was English too.

Now Benedict Cumberbatch is in an acclaimed Western too (previewed at Venice) and one has to ask does America even need actors any more?

Anyway this one looks right up my street too. High hopes.

Blondeshavemorefun · 10/09/2021 14:01

Does seem Weird on bbc 2 not 1

Mydogisagentleman · 10/09/2021 14:27

Looking forward to this evening

KillingMeDeftly · 10/09/2021 19:48

This looks good, though I kind of feel it's the wrong time of year for it! Surely it should be broadcast in the middle of winter??

Not sure if it's going to be weekly or if the Beeb will put it all up at once.

Blondeshavemorefun · 10/09/2021 19:57

This thread will be for weekly

So have a week to chat about episode etc

OP posts:
KillingMeDeftly · 10/09/2021 20:35

Yes I figured that from the title! I was just thinking out loud, so to speak.

Blondeshavemorefun · 10/09/2021 20:53

They usually put all up once e 1 is shown

Time for a quick wee and then starts

It's a bit slow so far. And it feels strange to see Stephen Graham with so much hair!

MrsLargeEmbodied · 10/09/2021 22:31

i had to disappear when the seals appeared

Janaih · 10/09/2021 22:45

That was a gripping first episode. The seals were uncomfortable watching but I eat meat so can't complain too much. I'm wondering if that's the reason for bbc2 slot.

Stephen graham's accent was a tad patchy. They should just let him be a scouser in everything a la Sean bean professional yorkshireman. We would allow it because delivery, timing and screen presence is perfect.

BuckyBarnesArm · 10/09/2021 22:55

I enjoyed it, Jack O'Connell is one of my favourite actors along with Stephen Graham although I have to agree Steve's accent was a bit dodge at times. @MorrisZapp Godless was brilliant I agree. I've also watched Jack in '71, The Hitman's Apprentice and the film where he plays an American who gets sentenced to death for an arson attack which kills his children, though I can't remember the name of the bloody thing.

BuckyBarnesArm · 10/09/2021 22:55

The seal scene was hard ugh.

Blondeshavemorefun · 11/09/2021 08:45

I thought started at 9

Was 930 so had to go to bed. Work nights and was shattered

Havnt read replies so will watch and be back

Looking forward to watching this but will probably binge watch so won't be able to post on here. I also watched The Terror and really enjoyed.

KillingMeDeftly · 11/09/2021 09:32

So did I @Blondeshavemorefun so I was falling asleep a bit at the end. Maybe that was just for this week and it'll be at 9pm from now.

I'll probably watch the lot over the next week or so but won't be posting any spoilers obviously!
