Starts tomorrow at Farrell plays Henry Drax in the drama, a harpooner and brutish killer whose amorality has been shaped to fit the harshness of his world, who will set sail on a whaling expedition to the Arctic with Patrick Sumner, a disgraced ex-army surgeon who signs up as the ship’s doctor.

Hoping to escape the horrors of his past, Sumner finds himself on an ill-fated journey with a murderous psychopath. In search of redemption, his story becomes a harsh struggle for survival in the Arctic wasteland."[1]

In Hull, 1859, Patrick Sumner, a cashiered Irish army surgeon boards the whaling ship Volunteer as its ships surgeon under Captain Brownlee.

He becomes acquainted with the rest of the crew, including the vulgar first mate Cavendish, whalers Jones, Otto and the especially thuggish and murderous harpooner Henry Drax.

Working with the ship's financier and whaling company head Baxter in an insurance scam

I really enjoyed which is rare for me for something set in 1800

But yes the seals :(

Suprised they didn’t keep the flesh to cook and eat rather then. Just skins

So the plan is to sink the ship and steal the ring

thanks for the recap!

notanotherjacketpotato · 11/09/2021 10:27

I was excited for this but found it very wordy and boring. I was tired so might try it again today.

It also seemed really quite and I needed subtitles on!

Blondeshavemorefun · 11/09/2021 11:24

I always have subtitles on now

I absolutely LOVE this board! I've watched so many fab things that I would have missed if I hadn't read it here first. Thanks for sharing, I'll start on this, this evening!

OldTinHat · 11/09/2021 12:14

And I always have subtitles on too so that I don't disturb neighbours.

Boredsillyathome · 11/09/2021 12:17

I did enjoy it but did struggle with the sound, so thank you for the recap!!

Blondeshavemorefun · 11/09/2021 13:22

Welcome @OldTinHat

If I see something advertised on tv etc I tend to try and do a thread few days before so people see it

Rather then 5 mins before starting

They seem to make quite a few shows like this now where the more you turn it up the louder the background noises are but the speaking no clearer!

OldTinHat · 11/09/2021 19:16

Thanks @Blondes! I don't often post but I'd be lost without recommendations like these.

I'm on E3 of this, it's so gripping and so brutal. But no spoilers, I know the rules!

I watched the second episode last night and l won't give anything away but I will say that it's not for the squeamish! I almost feel like there needs to be some sort of warning at the start, like there is on Netflix.

Also I don't know if it's my tv (although it's only a couple of years old) but it was so dark I had to turn the brightness right up.

DrHildegardeLanstrom · 12/09/2021 21:59

I couldn't watch after the seals. I'm considering going back to it but I imagine there will be whales next

AnyFucker · 13/09/2021 00:07

I am loving this. I tried not to binge watch but failed miserably it’s so gripping with a massive The Terror” vibe.

AnyFucker · 13/09/2021 00:08

Colin Farrell has put some timber on, hasn’t he

That’s next on my planner to watch

I thought Stephen Grahams accent was acceptable ( for a Scouser). Better than the pub landlords which was distinctly West Riding.
And yes it was very dark.

AnyFucker · 13/09/2021 07:57

You haven’t seen The Terror ? You are in for a treat

KillingMeDeftly · 13/09/2021 08:01

Apparently the weight gain for this resulted in some health issues so for his next role (the Penguin in the new Batman film) he elected to wear a fat suit instead!
Mydogisagentleman · 13/09/2021 17:18

Really enjoyed it - apart from the seals of course

Davros · 13/09/2021 20:06

Tried it, lasted 5 mins. Too dark, grim, mumbly

Blondeshavemorefun · 13/09/2021 21:27

That’s a shame @Davros

I don’t really like period drama or things set years ago but thought this was good

Subtitles
