New thread.

Agree bit rich fiz blaming Tyrone for hopes behaviour! She was a pyromaniac long before he put his slippers under alina’s bed. More likely her psychopathic genes inherited from her father and shared with her crazy sister.

@OnTheBoardwalk

Kidnapping story isnt realistic at all.

But a broken leg isnt comparable as 1. A broken leg is completely fixable. 2 leaving the leg broken will cause all manor of complications and problems. 3. Fixing a broken leg doesnt have many risks associated with the procedure. 4. Once healed your leg will likely be as functional as someone who has never broken a leg.

There are definate pros to implants but there are cons and risks too and even after implant the person is still deaf and wont hear the same as a hearing person. It isnt a cure and results vary greatly.
A deaf child should still have access to BSL regardless or implant, BAHA or hearing aids or no amplification device.

Covidworries · 23/09/2021 00:02

They havent managed the story well as people are missing the points entirely.

Yes parents choice but people weigh in on things all the time that are nothing to do with anyone other than parents. Breast feeding, co sleeping, weaning, childcare, too much x, too little y, are they doing xyz yet, have you left them yet, you,ve left them already, ear piercing, hair cuts, clothes (too girly, not girl enough, underdressed, overdressed), carried when too big, walking when too small.

Etc etc
No ones buisness but as humans we too often stick our noses in generally its done because we feel so strongly about our view through.

Quarks69 · 23/09/2021 00:04

@OnTheBoardwalk But the point is, she intentionally stopped a chiLed from getting implants. She honestly believes (like some in the deaf community), that he is better off deaf, than half deaf. surely only someone who has never experienced the joy of hearing can say that.

What if you applied the same logic to a blind person...you would be considered crazy. When you haven’t heard music How can you deny that to someone who might be able to hear it.

Everyone saying sorry was way too soppy an ending.

Viviennemary · 23/09/2021 00:10

The story has been completely mishandled. Any sympathy for her cause was cancelled out by her foolish irresponsible if not criminal behaviour. Everyone saying sorry to her was batshit crazy.

Covidworries · 23/09/2021 00:22

Its nit as simple as half deaf through. Implants, BAHA, hearing aids aslo increase the chance of the person developing tinnitis and vertigo. Implants can reduce the person being able to do certain contact sports. Implants often remove any residual hearing so if they dont work or fail at any time the person can not go back to using hearing aids with their residual hearing because the implant has likely distroyed that.

The risk of menigitis is 10 times higher in implanted people. Their is risk of permanent nerve damage to the face.

Thats not to say that there isnt benefits but I conti ue to be shocked by how implants are protrayed even by professionals. If my child was having any other surgery the doctorsgo to great effort to ensure the parents are aware of every possible risk evem the very rare ones before the surgery is done. With implants this doesnt happen the risks are rarely discussed and the benefits inflated. And i dont understand this because i am sure most parents would carry on and implnt anyway of the unformation was transparent. But when things go wrongnor the results are less than the parents expect it is such a shock to them as the are unprepared.

Covidworries · 23/09/2021 00:26

The other issue is that too often after implants the family are under increasing pressure to stop using BSL due to the misguided and incorrect belief by many that sign will stop speech.

This really has created a one or other mindset. Where as in reality it should be encouraged to raise the child bilingual BSL and English regardless or any other tech that is or isnt used.

Deadringer · 23/09/2021 10:13

I can't stand Freda.

KeepSmiling89 · 23/09/2021 12:09

@CiaoForNiao

Its very very common for the Deaf community to have, and share those opinions though. My relatives have been "disowned" by some members of the community for choosing to have implants for their children.

No it isn't actually any of her business. But it's a realistic one.

As an aside, the sign for 'L' that the interpreter just showed Rita isn't the sign for L in BSL. At least it wasn't when i learned it. Has it changed?

About the 'L' sign, you're right. I did BSL Level 1 and the sign is totally different....it also wasn't to correct sign for lucky either.

It was such a frustrating episode. She kidnapped Aled when she knew he had his op. What was the point in saying they could get the implants when it's not her choice to make in the first place as well as knowing that they'd missed their appointment time anyway.

Gail's dry, already styled, hair in a turban as well...oh dear...

zanahoria · 23/09/2021 13:12

The debate around cochlear implants is fascinating but this storyline really did not do it justice.

Magicalwoodlands · 23/09/2021 13:16

I can't stand Freda.
Same. I can’t warm to her at all. I really can’t stand Gemma, either though.
CiaoForNiao · 23/09/2021 13:22

I agree. Which is a shame because its such a interesting topic.
eddiemairswife · 23/09/2021 13:39

Where is Emily? According to Wikipedia she went to Edinburgh to look after Freda while she was ill, but Freda is back in Coronation Street with no sight or sound of Emily. I suppose she could be caring for the three missing quads!

Covidworries · 23/09/2021 13:55

@zanahoria

Yes a real shame as the storyline has totally distracted from raising BSL awareness and from an unbiased discussion about implants. people have become fixated on the kidnapping story and everything else has fallen by the wayside

NCTDN · 23/09/2021 14:00

So was aled still going to have the operation or were they too late? Chesney said something about being bottom of the list.

All of this is so interesting and important to know. I would hope that these things are discussed during the hospital consultations? Maybe that would have been a better way to get the message across to viewers. They went about it in a really bad way. Instead of hearing what Freda was saying, all I could think was "how dare you take someone's child and refuse to give him back". Freda is not a likable character and what she did was abhorrent. Parents should absolutely have the correct information in order to make an informed choice, but once they've make a choice it's not for anyone else to get in the way of it.
PlonkyWillyWonky · 23/09/2021 15:14

When I did my signing it definitely wasn't the sign for lucky either
The next story line should be about the cost of missed hospital appointments and how much they cost the NHS
Corrie missed a great opportunity here with another stupid story line overtaking the real issue of living with deafness and the difficulties people face

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 23/09/2021 15:17

I thought Emily was in Peru. Confused. I can't stand Freda either. She's got a field of potatoes on her shoulder I don't know about a chip

Covidworries · 23/09/2021 15:24

@Leaveitonthefloordrobe

Sadly it isnt unbiased information at hospital consultations. They are under targets to get increasing numbers implanted.

But yes the kidnapping storyline took over as no way should anyone kidnap someones child

thenightsky · 23/09/2021 15:59

So, has Gail come all the way back from Thailand just for Norris's funeral? If so, I find that very hard to believe.

MrsRobbieHart · 23/09/2021 16:56

Apparently so. They really just throw whatever they like on the screen these days and expect us to lap it up.

Just caught up with last one. I think the interpreter was saying this is how sign lucky The L sign and flick on nose. You are right it’s not the L when finger spell but it’s the L hand shape. So if I had describe how sign Loser I’d say L hand sign held to forehead rather than L letter.

Agree the kidnap was silly an know she supposed to be grieving and all that but still. I was more distracted by how Gail managed keep Towel on her head. It’s been so long can’t remember if she was even Norris friend. Certainly not enough to fly half way round the world for. Maybe her visitor visa needed her leave Grin

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 23/09/2021 20:22

I take it Thailand are on the Green list then for when she flies back.

ThePoetsWife · 24/09/2021 03:50

The lucky sign is correct. Like other languages there are often more than one sign for a word or phrase.

They are under pressure to offer more Implants so the boy will get his soon, don't worry.

The ethics around implants are shocking - they don't inform parents well enough and they do need to do their research. I know people whose implants have failed or have experienced side effects (facial paralysis and meningitis) but these are downplayed by implants teams.

Me neither. Awful character.
Viviennemary · 24/09/2021 10:14

Freda is a dreadful character. And probably one of the worst ever as far as script and story line goes. What happened to Marys son. That was another piece of bonkers script writing.
