PGCE is different to teacher training as a degree and placements over 3y. It’s intensive in at Deep end learn and classroom which finishes many people off. So this is his first job as a NQT.

Freda is making good points though, if you lose hearing as older child after spoken speech it so much easier translate what sounds you can hear. Aled will not be fully part of hearing world nor the deaf community especially if his family don’t carry on signing. He be stuck in middle not able follow normal conversations nor translate sign. They are not magic cure just make some potential sounds easier to hear but still need childhood worth speech therapy and lip reading skills. Think they are showing various sides well.

Absolutely. I find Freda and her opinions of the implant to be very very realistic. And while Aled will be able to hear sounds, it will take a while for his brain to work out what those sounds are.

I understand and agree with all Freda’s points but she needs to mind her place. It’s not for her to decide whether another family get cochlear implants for their child. She is behaving like she has been left out of a family conversation and a decision made behind her back! Shes saying Gemma needs to understand her side- erm no- Freda doesn’t have a side in Gemma’s family.
