The six-part drama from World Productions (Line Of Duty, The Pembrokeshire Murders, Save Me, Bodyguard) stars Suranne Jones, Rose Leslie, Shaun Evans, Martin Compston and Paterson Joseph.

When a crew member is found dead on board the Trident nuclear submarine HMS Vigil, police in Scotland are called in to investigate. The catch? The UK’s nuclear deterrent must remain unbroken, so the submarine stays on patrol and Detective Chief Inspector Amy Silva (Suranne Jones) must go aboard to begin an investigation. Although the death was written off as an accidental overdose, Amy suspects foul play. But when the crew close ranks in the face of Amy’s questioning, a new threat overshadows her inquiry.

Vigil
Vigil’s stellar ensemble cast also features Anjli Mohindra, Connor Swindells, Adam James, Gary Lewis, Stephen Dillane, Lolita Chakrabarti, Daniel Portman, Lorne MacFadyen and Lauren Lyle.

The fictional six-part series is written and created by Bafta nominated writer Tom Edge, with episodes by Ed Macdonald and Chandni Lakhani. It is directed by Bafta winner James Strong, and Bafta nominee Isabelle Sieb. Vigil is produced by Angie Daniell, executive produced by Simon Heath and Jake Lushington for World Productions, Gaynor Holmes for the BBC, James Strong and Tom Edge.

Vigil
Vigil is set and was filmed in Scotland, and is supported by the National Lottery through Screen Scotland. International distribution is handled by ITV Studios.

@RampantIvy

What has Rose Leslie been in?

Downton Abbey and Game of Thrones

She also played Maia in The Good Fight
Ekofisk · 30/08/2021 10:57

@SpindleWhorl

Apparently Rose Leslie is Scottish aristocracy.
You can stay in the family castle (if you have deep pockets).

Quite an interesting interview with an ex submariner in the Times today. He explains XO (executive officer) and silent state. He says only the XO, captain and navigator will ever know where the sub is.

Thanks @Blondeshavemorefun, Thanks
I can always rely on you to start a thread on something that should be good to watch on the box.
Have taped it to watch later.

I think that Paterson Joseph will turn out to be a 'good' guy. Or rather, not a complete bad guy.

Poor Paterson Joseph. I can't be the only person who mentally says, 'Johnson!' every single time he appears on screen. It's literally a Pavlovian response.

Fferny1 · 30/08/2021 13:32

I thought this was brilliantly atmospheric and portrayed claustrophobia so well, but I haven't got a clue what's going on.
It's just a very stylish thriller that's eminently watchable.

midsomermurderess · 30/08/2021 13:33

Nobody cares about 'rank slides', the space being wrong. This is story telling. And the people griping, you enjoy it really, being able to say 'ooh, that's wrong'. It always happens 'I (or here, more often, 'my dh') am a doctor, lawyer, teacher, traffic warden, dinner lady, that's wrong?!!?'. It is so self-absorbed and dull, because, not one other person cares, not one. It is story telling.

Anyway, I found it gripping, the claustrophobia, that you are meant to feel, oppressive, and it looks worth following.

Also who is so challenged they couldn't work out that Martin Compson was going to have a recurring role to play? If you struggle with that, good luck with the plot here.

I'm a subtitle fan ! Can't watch anything without them on.
I've never watched GoT either ; my sons used to be obsessed by it , then it got silly apparently?
Only actress I'm aware of is Emilia Clark who played the dragon lady. She's been in a few other things.
Read a few reviews about vigil : some were more complementary than others!
I enjoyed it even though I'm not a Suranne Jones fan.

ImFree2doasiwant · 30/08/2021 14:23

Just watched the first episode, looking forward to the second later.

SpindleWhorl · 30/08/2021 14:24

Lucy Mangan gives it the full five stars 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 in The Guardian.

That's us told.

For what it's worth, I miss my dad. Possibly more now than when he died. He knew submarines, and wouldn't have held back on the things he thought weren't right on the set etc. It would have been a pleasure to watch it with him and listen to what he had to say.

Also, the fact that the set does seem to have more room on it than a real sub and still makes us all feel the claustrophobia and oppression is interesting, I think, and worth noting.

We all watch these things for different reasons. Some of us care about details others don't. I find those bits of discussion fascinating and they add to my experience of watching. If that's not the case for others, it's pretty easy to skip those posts.

AnyFucker · 30/08/2021 15:19

Is this on again tonight and then next Sunday ? Thanks.

Blondeshavemorefun · 30/08/2021 15:21

Welcome @LadyEloise1

Right have seen

Yes confusing that many men have beards and all sound the same

The gf knows there is a cover up. This is what they do

Why would a woman be the doctor on a sub that’s full of men. Sure many men wouldn’t go to see her as sexist

May have to see for third time 😂

But the trawler got hooked by the submarine and killed all those men

Meanwhile mc died of an overdose /murdered as he wanted to help those men and no one else did.

And those top bed bunks. Wow. Def cramped !!
