The six-part drama from World Productions (Line Of Duty, The Pembrokeshire Murders, Save Me, Bodyguard) stars Suranne Jones, Rose Leslie, Shaun Evans, Martin Compston and Paterson Joseph.

When a crew member is found dead on board the Trident nuclear submarine HMS Vigil, police in Scotland are called in to investigate. The catch? The UK’s nuclear deterrent must remain unbroken, so the submarine stays on patrol and Detective Chief Inspector Amy Silva (Suranne Jones) must go aboard to begin an investigation. Although the death was written off as an accidental overdose, Amy suspects foul play. But when the crew close ranks in the face of Amy’s questioning, a new threat overshadows her inquiry.

Vigil
Vigil’s stellar ensemble cast also features Anjli Mohindra, Connor Swindells, Adam James, Gary Lewis, Stephen Dillane, Lolita Chakrabarti, Daniel Portman, Lorne MacFadyen and Lauren Lyle.

The fictional six-part series is written and created by Bafta nominated writer Tom Edge, with episodes by Ed Macdonald and Chandni Lakhani. It is directed by Bafta winner James Strong, and Bafta nominee Isabelle Sieb. Vigil is produced by Angie Daniell, executive produced by Simon Heath and Jake Lushington for World Productions, Gaynor Holmes for the BBC, James Strong and Tom Edge.

Vigil
Vigil is set and was filmed in Scotland, and is supported by the National Lottery through Screen Scotland. International distribution is handled by ITV Studios.

Personally, I enjoy these MN watch-alongs.

AnyFucker · 30/08/2021 17:19

Thanks for the timings 👍

dapsnotplimsolls · 30/08/2021 18:28

@SpindleWhorl

Yes, *@Violetparis*, he started off somewhere near Middlesbrough, headed towards Manchester, then veered into Liverpool! I think he might head off to Chester tonight.
I'm glad it wasn't just me - I didn't recognise him at first, was too busy wondering about his accent!
Takenoprisoner · 30/08/2021 18:31

Can anyone advise whether this series would be suitable for a 12 year old boy?

RampantIvy · 30/08/2021 18:32

Episode one, yes, but we don't know how the story will unfold.

Piggywaspushed · 30/08/2021 18:33

I'd say it might not be pacy enough for a 12 year old : a bit subtle?

EsmaCannonball · 30/08/2021 18:39

Am I imagining things or did I see a documentary or news item onboard a nuclear submarine several years ago where near the room where one would launch the nuclear missile they kept a baseball bat and a gun in case somebody tried to launch an unauthorised nuclear attack? I'm pretty sure it was real.

florafoxtrot · 30/08/2021 19:06

Definitely excited for episode 2 tonight. Had contemplated a pre bedtime swimming but I’m sacking that off.

And got some of DD leftover birthday cake for a snack. Smile

SpindleWhorl · 30/08/2021 19:10

I agree Ep 1 is fine for a 12 year old, but that we don't what's coming next.

I guess at some point we see Martin Compston being killed / dying?

It’s after the 9 o’clock watershed so you don’t know what is going to emerge as a story line. I doubt it is going to encourage anyone to think of a career in submarines though if that is why he is thinking of watching. Grin
Oblomov21 · 30/08/2021 19:15

Will watch this.

TheRebelle · 30/08/2021 20:04

I loved it, the premise might be a bit out there but most murder mysteries are anyway. I love Martin Compston and Sean Evans, can’t wait for tonight.

Same. Quite happy to suspend disbelief for a decent, distracting, juicy, murder mystery. Not at all bothered about shirt colours or rank anomalies. It’s not a documentary 🤷‍♀️

I’m liking Shaun Evans, and the ever-so-typecast (but doubt he’s bothered one bit) Adam James.

Getting my prediction in early. Coxswain did it. He’s just too helpful.

Blondeshavemorefun · 30/08/2021 20:30

"It's Steve! He's a ship Mate"

I laughed more than I should have.

I think the murderer is a woman ..
(Based on nothing )

I'm assuming that was why his girlfriend was trying to get into his room. She knew about the secret thingy and where it was hidden. Can't help wondering why he didn't just leave it with her in the first place.
Blueberrycreampie · 30/08/2021 20:54

@Rollergirl11 Ah thanks, I thought I heard her asking the girlfriend how she knew?

Ulysses · 30/08/2021 21:01

I really enjoyed it last night. I was thinking of giving it a miss as the premise didn’t lure me in but gave it a go after listening to the Shrine of Duty podcast. I’ve missed those guys. I really like Suranne Jones too (though I do get the comment about the gurning). Martin Compston looks terrible in this. Not sure because he’s been at sea for so long.

Blondeshavemorefun · 30/08/2021 21:02

Would have been easier @BoreOfWhabylon!,

Ugh why did she do that??? (the usb)

the80sweregreat · 30/08/2021 21:11

She should have hidden the USB a lot better than that! I hope the cat will be ok

NoraEphronsNeck · 30/08/2021 21:18

I'm sure the green fleece is under the bottom bunk in her room. When she dropped the tablet the nurse reached under to get it for her and I'm sure it was shoved under there.
