The six-part drama from World Productions (Line Of Duty, The Pembrokeshire Murders, Save Me, Bodyguard) stars Suranne Jones, Rose Leslie, Shaun Evans, Martin Compston and Paterson Joseph.

When a crew member is found dead on board the Trident nuclear submarine HMS Vigil, police in Scotland are called in to investigate. The catch? The UK’s nuclear deterrent must remain unbroken, so the submarine stays on patrol and Detective Chief Inspector Amy Silva (Suranne Jones) must go aboard to begin an investigation. Although the death was written off as an accidental overdose, Amy suspects foul play. But when the crew close ranks in the face of Amy’s questioning, a new threat overshadows her inquiry.

Vigil
Vigil’s stellar ensemble cast also features Anjli Mohindra, Connor Swindells, Adam James, Gary Lewis, Stephen Dillane, Lolita Chakrabarti, Daniel Portman, Lorne MacFadyen and Lauren Lyle.

The fictional six-part series is written and created by Bafta nominated writer Tom Edge, with episodes by Ed Macdonald and Chandni Lakhani. It is directed by Bafta winner James Strong, and Bafta nominee Isabelle Sieb. Vigil is produced by Angie Daniell, executive produced by Simon Heath and Jake Lushington for World Productions, Gaynor Holmes for the BBC, James Strong and Tom Edge.

Vigil
Vigil is set and was filmed in Scotland, and is supported by the National Lottery through Screen Scotland. International distribution is handled by ITV Studios.

They’re not on silent running at this point in the series.

Akire · 09/09/2021 10:14

Did they shot him out the missile pad? Or will they leave him for another 3 weeks and take him off then?

Palavah · 09/09/2021 10:25

The body?

It's in a pod which isn't insulated so he's being kept at the temperature of the seawater. They said approx 4 degrees. Not sure if that's cold enough to preserve for 3 weeks. A steak would be pretty smelly if you left it in the fridge for 3 weeks.

Palavah · 09/09/2021 10:26

@FreezerBird

Are we going to mention the memorial? I know it was meant to be all tense with cross-currents but I love that hymn so much. And they all knew the words, which I think is probably realistic.

However did their singing compromise their silent running? Imagine being in another sub, listening and hearing singing. It makes me go a bit shivery.

(I vaguely remember this as a plot point in The Hunt for Red October)

How would another sub hear the singing?
Blondeshavemorefun · 09/09/2021 10:58

Some steak may be ok but yes the body will be kept cold guess best they can do under circumstances

Just seen another boat thriller series. StArts tomorrow - looks quite good

I think I'd assumed they were silent running most of the time, given they're concerned about being tailed by the other sub.

Although given some of the shouting matches in the control room so far, they're not being that quiet a lot of the time!

FreezerBird · 09/09/2021 11:06

How would another sub hear the singing?

Passive sonar - they're listening all the time, and sound travels far further through water than air. (Whale song etc).

Further investigation indicates that modern subs are far better sound proofed than previously, and while tannoy announcements might be audible to a listening sub, normal voices wouldn't be. Although where the full crew belting out 'for those in peril on the sea' falls on the spectrum between tannoy announcement and normal unamplified speech I don't know.

Blondes thank you for the reminder about The North Water. I was trying to remember the latest thing that Stephen Graham was in -and that's the one! It looks really good.

Human voices don't travel well though - that's why you have to use other signals when diving, for example. I can't explain why tannoy works.

Well, that and you’d drown 🤣

That looks a bit like The Terror, which was good but pretty bleak.

Reverberation around the hull maybe? I would imagine it's to do with frequency, low frequencies (eg whales moo-ing at each other - c'mon it's not really song is it?) being better than high.

Mind you I'm not claiming detailed knowledge - this is all based on badly remembered conversations with my dad (submarine engineer, sadly no longer around to consult) and The Hunt For Red October which I don't claim as a definitive source!

Blondeshavemorefun · 09/09/2021 15:48

@KillingMeDeftly , the Terror is on my Planner. Is it good and similar to this

and @HenriettaBadger I love Stephen was good in line of duty

What hymn was it? I'm not too up on hymns and it did sound lovely.
Akire · 09/09/2021 18:53

Eternal father strong to save “for those in peril on the sea” sang in film titanic if it helps!

FreezerBird · 09/09/2021 19:02

Yes, it's 'Eternal Father, Strong to Save'.

Sung every year at the special service in one of our local churches to bless the lifeboat!

KillingMeDeftly · 09/09/2021 19:16

@Blondeshavemorefun Yes, The Terror is very good although it has more of a horror/supernatural bent. I've only seen the first season but there's a second set in a Japanese internment camp in the US during WWII.

Mydogisagentleman · 10/09/2021 08:35

Blimey, just got to the end of this thread.
Me and DH have been watching.
I had the coxswain down as a baddy from the start.
Our prediction is that the beardy man who SJ stopped from taking his own life will become very useful to her.
I am suspicious of the woman with long curly hair

Hopdathelf · 10/09/2021 10:41

It’s terrible, don’t waste your time.

@viques I was bored whilst baby was napping on me so had a look to check. I think it's just the angle of the photo and she's got her hand on his arm. Definitely the same tattoo and fairly confident it's the same position Grin

I just realised the doctor was the terrorist mastermind in Bodyguard a few years ago.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 12/09/2021 18:59

I'm conflicted between Vigil and Endeavour tonight - Shaun Evans with a beard vs Shaun Evans cleanshaven - hmmm.
