The six-part drama from World Productions (Line Of Duty, The Pembrokeshire Murders, Save Me, Bodyguard) stars Suranne Jones, Rose Leslie, Shaun Evans, Martin Compston and Paterson Joseph.

When a crew member is found dead on board the Trident nuclear submarine HMS Vigil, police in Scotland are called in to investigate. The catch? The UK’s nuclear deterrent must remain unbroken, so the submarine stays on patrol and Detective Chief Inspector Amy Silva (Suranne Jones) must go aboard to begin an investigation. Although the death was written off as an accidental overdose, Amy suspects foul play. But when the crew close ranks in the face of Amy’s questioning, a new threat overshadows her inquiry.

Vigil
Vigil’s stellar ensemble cast also features Anjli Mohindra, Connor Swindells, Adam James, Gary Lewis, Stephen Dillane, Lolita Chakrabarti, Daniel Portman, Lorne MacFadyen and Lauren Lyle.

The fictional six-part series is written and created by Bafta nominated writer Tom Edge, with episodes by Ed Macdonald and Chandni Lakhani. It is directed by Bafta winner James Strong, and Bafta nominee Isabelle Sieb. Vigil is produced by Angie Daniell, executive produced by Simon Heath and Jake Lushington for World Productions, Gaynor Holmes for the BBC, James Strong and Tom Edge.

Vigil
Vigil is set and was filmed in Scotland, and is supported by the National Lottery through Screen Scotland. International distribution is handled by ITV Studios.

@GrandmasNightgown

Who is Davis, and is it a he or a she?
I think Davis was the name of the firm that employed the two dead contractors?
GrandmasNightgown · 07/09/2021 11:28

Thanks!

Antsinyourpanta · 07/09/2021 11:31

Yes I thought there was 2 contractors (who died) from Davis Marine

@NewModelArmyMayhem18

The coxswain's behaviour changed quite markedly in this episode, didn't it? I don't think him having the tattoo would necessarily make him the guy in the photo. Tattoos are very common in sailors and I wouldn't be surprised if there aren't standard ones amongst crew mates?
I thought in the phone picture the tattoo was more on the shoulder and back, whereas in the family photo of the coxswain ( will try to learn his name by next week) the tattoo looked more as if it was on his bicep.

Other tattoos are available.

Ekofisk · 07/09/2021 11:50

But there’s some kind of physical thing going on between the coxswain and the doctor - it was the coxswain that pointed out the “no touching” rule to Silva and then was breaking that by going in to snog the doctor?

HenriettaBadger · 07/09/2021 12:36

That was it, thanks!

I agree that something is going on between the doc & the coxswain. He was happy enough to break the no touching rule there! And with Suranne with the Straight Hair.

KillingMeDeftly · 07/09/2021 13:06

So was there some collusion between the navy and Davies? And the US navy? Because surely anyone can tell the difference between two bodies that were "cooked alive" from two that drowned? Wouldn't their families have had to identify them? Does that mean the families were paid off and made to sign NDAs?

He’s been so emphatic about keeping the rules, it’s made me think he’s not such a good guy.
Ekofisk · 07/09/2021 14:13

Did the coxswain persuade the doctor to tamper with the urine samples taken after the USA incident?

Was he covering his own arse because ultimately he’s responsible for welfare and morale in the boat and he messed up somewhere?

Good theory.
Piggywaspushed · 07/09/2021 15:50

It's not much of a role for canteen lady so far. Standing in corners, greeting, as they say. I do recognise the actress. Scottish. She'll get some key lines soon. It hasn't occurred to Suranne to speak to anyone outside military rank yet....

iklboo · 07/09/2021 16:07

Not always. They can be identified by their superiors or their ID. There's quite a few 'closed casket' funerals - they just tell the families the viewing would be too upsetting.

KillingMeDeftly · 07/09/2021 16:55

True. That's still a few NDAs though!

That’s Anita Vettesse playing the cook, Petty Officer Jackie Hamilton.

Yes could be that. Not necessarily a murderer but covering himself. Perhaps doc is the murderer as it’s all spiralled out of control?
Oblomov21 · 07/09/2021 20:59

Up to episode 3. Hope it continues to be ok and doesn't turn naff in episode 5 & 6.

Akire · 07/09/2021 21:13

Well 3 was more confusing! Could been the Gin or two. Hate when shoes do lots stuff on google my Tv to small I havnt clue what’s going on. They could least pretend and say allowed what they typing for those without giant TV screens.

Felt like to much at home and not enough on the Sub. Why is no one talking to the cook she’s only one sad he’s died. The one who serves the food gets the gossip!

Taswama · 08/09/2021 21:55

I think the sad cook may be a red herring.

TheChosenTwo · 08/09/2021 23:12

I’ve just rewatched all 3 episodes with dd.
I’m now more suspicious of the coxswain than ever before. And Suranne Jones up until now has been sharing all her theories and coded messages from land with him, it’s like she’s inadvertently kept her friends close but the secret enemy closer - not that she has any friends onboard…
And suspicious also of the policewoman on land, Longacre (?) now that the MI5 are chasing her. Why? What’s going to come from that?
How is information being leaked from the submarine on to land? How did Jade find out Burke was dead? How did the MPs sidekick find out that Jade was dead? I know he said he had friends in the peace camp but things aren’t all adding up.
I think the cook has been roped into it somehow but not fully responsible, I wonder how many people have been dragged into it all and also who will ultimately be responsible.

Akire · 08/09/2021 23:23

If news was leaked from HQ to spy in camp to force Jade to release information they thought he had on them.. it wasn’t thought out from well given police found the info in his room in first 30 seconds of looking.

Then police have everything so why kill Jade? Why chase what’s her name top carpark when everyone back at Nick can watch at will.

Why oh why does going to a multi story car park help? Is this in police hand book? Why drive to a dead end space?

How is Surrane going cope when she packed 3 days and now needs 18 more pairs clean pants!

MissMarpleRocks · 09/09/2021 07:05

How is Surrane going cope when she packed 3 days and now needs 18 more pairs clean pants! yes!

I’m liking it very much but I said to dh that Suranne shouldn’t be sharing so much info with Endeavour. IMO he’s too big an actor not to have an a pivotal role.

She can wash her pants the same as the crew. They don't take a pair of pants for every day of the mission when they are away for months.

The multi storey car park was a trap, so those chasing were easily caught by back up. It went a bit wrong because back up was late.

They do have washing machines!

Although I hope “navy issue washing powder” isn’t as itchy as it sounds.

FreezerBird · 09/09/2021 09:42

Are we going to mention the memorial? I know it was meant to be all tense with cross-currents but I love that hymn so much. And they all knew the words, which I think is probably realistic.

However did their singing compromise their silent running? Imagine being in another sub, listening and hearing singing. It makes me go a bit shivery.

(I vaguely remember this as a plot point in The Hunt for Red October)
