The six-part drama from World Productions (Line Of Duty, The Pembrokeshire Murders, Save Me, Bodyguard) stars Suranne Jones, Rose Leslie, Shaun Evans, Martin Compston and Paterson Joseph.

When a crew member is found dead on board the Trident nuclear submarine HMS Vigil, police in Scotland are called in to investigate. The catch? The UK’s nuclear deterrent must remain unbroken, so the submarine stays on patrol and Detective Chief Inspector Amy Silva (Suranne Jones) must go aboard to begin an investigation. Although the death was written off as an accidental overdose, Amy suspects foul play. But when the crew close ranks in the face of Amy’s questioning, a new threat overshadows her inquiry.

Vigil
Vigil’s stellar ensemble cast also features Anjli Mohindra, Connor Swindells, Adam James, Gary Lewis, Stephen Dillane, Lolita Chakrabarti, Daniel Portman, Lorne MacFadyen and Lauren Lyle.

The fictional six-part series is written and created by Bafta nominated writer Tom Edge, with episodes by Ed Macdonald and Chandni Lakhani. It is directed by Bafta winner James Strong, and Bafta nominee Isabelle Sieb. Vigil is produced by Angie Daniell, executive produced by Simon Heath and Jake Lushington for World Productions, Gaynor Holmes for the BBC, James Strong and Tom Edge.

Vigil
Vigil is set and was filmed in Scotland, and is supported by the National Lottery through Screen Scotland. International distribution is handled by ITV Studios.

She's got a stronger stomach than me for violence, so it'd be off long before she started getting freaked! Brilliant, will suggest it to her thanks!

@BroccoliFloret

Oh and local knowledge doesn't help when your woman is driving north out of the Clyde tunnel with the Spooks in hot pursuit.

"Why doesn't she just drive into Morrisons at Anniesland" says DH and he has a point. More open and public than the top floor of a deserted car park.

She doesn't want to lead the baddies to a place jam packed with people though. What if they were the Line of Duty Balaclava Men and got out shooting?

The multi-storey car park was a good plan but the timing didn't work. The aim was to lead them somewhere they could be trapped and apprehended.

The car park has limited exits with limited numbers of civilians but also doesn't look suspicious to the following vehicle.

I think more to come on the MPs ex cnd campaigning. And the submarine being a ticking timebomb coming into harbour which he won’t want? Did the daughter think she was going to meet him on the quiet road?

SpindleWhorl · 06/09/2021 18:25

Thatcher had a shoot to kill policy re the peace camp protesters at Faslane. The murkiness goes back a long way.

escapeyou · 06/09/2021 19:11

It's not on tonight as it was last week. Has it gone to once a week now so drawn out over the next 3 weeks.

Piggywaspushed · 06/09/2021 19:15

Yes, that was a Bank Holiday extra.

Wow that’s awful

DH and I are loving this series but living in Glasgow we get so distracted.

That's Loch Lomond! That's Largs (where Rose Leslie was talking to a guy on the seafront) The City Chambers! Clyde Tunnel! Waterloo St carpark (even though they said it was Renfrew Street).

Anyway. No idea who dunnit. My money's on the slimy politician.

Yeah me too, I work around the Renfrew Street area so know it well and was thinking oh I'll see the carpark I park in sometimes but was totally confused when she headed in the opposite direction!

I wasn't expecting the American involvement, though probably should have done - in these sorts of series it's usually the Americans who are up to no good behind it all. I guess they think Vigil is a duff boat and are testing it to see. I think the captain is paranoid and incompetent but not the mastermind behind it all. It's probably Young Morse. And Suranne Of The Straight Hair will have to team up with Pod to solve it.

mpsw · 06/09/2021 21:27

It wasn't a shoot to kill policy aimed at protestors. It was a change to the ROE I think military bases, permitting the use of force, up to and including lethal force if other measures had failed, against saboteurs. It was never needed,

"The following year, the then defence secretary George Younger told Thatcher: “The rules of engagement governing the armed guards on the Polaris jetties have been amended, with the agreement of the law officers, to make clear that they may, as a last resort, open fire to prevent a perceived threat of sabotage not only to the nuclear warheads but also to the submarine.”

@NewModelArmyMayhem18

The coxswain's behaviour changed quite markedly in this episode, didn't it? I don't think him having the tattoo would necessarily make him the guy in the photo. Tattoos are very common in sailors and I wouldn't be surprised if there aren't standard ones amongst crew mates?
The coxswain has been the nicest crewman to her so I was sure at some point we were going to find something bad about him. Plus, the actor, Shaun Evans, has had the starring role in Endeavour for ten years so I can’t see him accepting a minor role. His character must be integral to the plot in some way.
the80sweregreat · 06/09/2021 22:23

Suranne with the straight hair!! Lol
I think her lack of meds will cause her to crack up a bit and start waving guns around , go a bit rouge!

Gilmorehill · 06/09/2021 23:15

I think that the lack of medication will be a factor. She didn’t know she’d be down there so long.

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 06/09/2021 23:30

We're behind and just watched ep 2. Boyfriend says it's already jumped the shark with the tanker thing. Why didn't they see it on sonar?

Egghead68 · 07/09/2021 01:34

They don’t use active sonar some of the time because sending out the signals would give their own location away.

Newgirls · 07/09/2021 07:49

I think the Americans might be the good guys. They had a dodgy uk sub that almost exploded in Florida and they think it’s going to blow up in Scotland. I reckon they are trying to stop that.

SpindleWhorl · 07/09/2021 08:11

Ah yes, and how high up does the conspiracy go? Is this at Pentagon / top MoD level - or at Presidential / Ministerial & PM level?

Love a bit of spooks stuff.

But then why would they let Suranne With The Straight Hair loose on the boat?

Newgirls · 07/09/2021 08:14

Because there’s a muuuurrder - they all want the sub closed down don’t they so every little helps.

Woman in canteen got to be key too - also cnd/peace camp? Or husband/brother was drowned on a fishing trawler years back? What’s she up to in the canteen?!

bakingdemon · 07/09/2021 08:35

@RuleWithAWoodenFoot I thought that too, but it turns out there was a real trawler sunk by a submarine which didn't see it: www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-9941613/Are-gripped-BBCs-new-undersea-drama-Vigil.html

So of all the "really?" moments in this show, that's not one!

Ekofisk · 07/09/2021 10:06

Woman in canteen got to be key too - also cnd/peace camp? Or husband/brother was drowned on a fishing trawler years back? What’s she up to in the canteen?!

Maybe someone slipped something into dead guy’s dinner and she’s worried that it was her cooking wot done him in?

GrandmasNightgown · 07/09/2021 10:14

Who is Davis, and is it a he or a she?

HenriettaBadger · 07/09/2021 10:59

The canteen woman is suspiciously more upset than anyone else. Is that to cover her back or because she was with Burke?

Wasn't Davis something to do with the incident in Florida?

SkunkButRug · 07/09/2021 11:18

I thought Davis was the name of the contractors' company - Davis Marine or something?

Hopdathelf · 07/09/2021 11:25

Yes, Davis has been dealt with. It’s the company that employed the marine contractors that were cooked alive by the venting steam.
