The six-part drama from World Productions (Line Of Duty, The Pembrokeshire Murders, Save Me, Bodyguard) stars Suranne Jones, Rose Leslie, Shaun Evans, Martin Compston and Paterson Joseph.

When a crew member is found dead on board the Trident nuclear submarine HMS Vigil, police in Scotland are called in to investigate. The catch? The UK’s nuclear deterrent must remain unbroken, so the submarine stays on patrol and Detective Chief Inspector Amy Silva (Suranne Jones) must go aboard to begin an investigation. Although the death was written off as an accidental overdose, Amy suspects foul play. But when the crew close ranks in the face of Amy’s questioning, a new threat overshadows her inquiry.

Vigil
Vigil’s stellar ensemble cast also features Anjli Mohindra, Connor Swindells, Adam James, Gary Lewis, Stephen Dillane, Lolita Chakrabarti, Daniel Portman, Lorne MacFadyen and Lauren Lyle.

The fictional six-part series is written and created by Bafta nominated writer Tom Edge, with episodes by Ed Macdonald and Chandni Lakhani. It is directed by Bafta winner James Strong, and Bafta nominee Isabelle Sieb. Vigil is produced by Angie Daniell, executive produced by Simon Heath and Jake Lushington for World Productions, Gaynor Holmes for the BBC, James Strong and Tom Edge.

Vigil
Vigil is set and was filmed in Scotland, and is supported by the National Lottery through Screen Scotland. International distribution is handled by ITV Studios.

I doubt she's pregnant. That's about as plausible as Kirsten being the stepdaughter grown up!

JanglyBeads · 06/09/2021 00:00

If she were pregnant that might make more sense of her “I’m not prepared” (to stay three weeks longer on this sub)? Or maybe it was just the claustrophobia/PTSD.

There’s so much foreboding music etc, and the flashbacks, I hate to think what the denouement will involve for her. Apart from the sub failing of course. It’ll beJack on Titanic all over again. Which is appropriate!

LavenderAskew · 06/09/2021 00:17

The pregnancy question was because of the drugs being prescribed wasn't it?

I mean it's possible she was pregnant then and lost the baby, but she can't be pregnant now surel

We've no idea of the time between the crash and the submarine have we? Just know she appears to have had a reaction with her colleague in between (or are we even assuming the in-between bit?).

pastaparadise · 06/09/2021 00:17

I took the holding belly at funeral to be a miscarriage? Surely the accident must have been quite a while ago for them to consider sending her on board so she would be obviously preggers by now if she was ?

LavenderAskew · 06/09/2021 00:18

I think the I'm not prepared relates to her prescription. She only has enough for three days.

JacquelineCarlyle · 06/09/2021 00:19

I've just caught up, so will join the thread if that's ok as I enjoyed the show. My DH thought it was crap so quit part-way through episode 2 but I think I'll stick with it!

Love all the theories here!

viques · 06/09/2021 02:12

@AngeloMysterioso

Tattooed dude is coxswain I reckon
No, it’s that mysterious non speaking catering woman. Crying again. Guilty conscience. She done it m’lud. Motive? Oh come on, I’ve solved the case, someone else can sort out the nitty gritty details.
viques · 06/09/2021 02:16

Oh sorry, that was supposed to be in reply to @thedarkling who thinks the captain is totes the baddy.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 06/09/2021 06:55

The coxswain's behaviour changed quite markedly in this episode, didn't it? I don't think him having the tattoo would necessarily make him the guy in the photo. Tattoos are very common in sailors and I wouldn't be surprised if there aren't standard ones amongst crew mates?

But he did kiss the doctor in one scene and she him asked how Steve arnott (do new name) had got the photo. I think he must have been the guy in the photo.
TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 06/09/2021 07:20

I think the ending made it very clear that the coxswain and Tattooed Man in Incriminating Pic are one and the same. Thus setting up the next stage of her investigation that the one person she thought was at least sympathetic and somewhat trustworthy is just as dodgy as the rest of them.

I'm not sure how people are arriving at the possibility that she's pregnant with her dead boyfriend's baby in the present time on the sub or that GoT Woman is her grown up stepdaughter? I thought it was quite clear from the first time we saw them together in the first episode that they'd been in a sexual relationship.

My guess is that she may have been pregnant when the crash happened and subsequently lost the baby (clutching her abdomen during the funeral as a PP said) and thus the doctor's questions about pregnancy felt even more insensitive to her.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 06/09/2021 07:20

Agree @Egghead68 but just thinking that tattoos on sailors are probably almost a given (and had SJ's character actually seen the original photo)?

GrandmasNightgown · 06/09/2021 07:24

There's definitely a bit of an orient express vibe

I like this theory!!

JacquelineCarlyle · 06/09/2021 07:56

I agree @TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross

If it ends up like this remember i said it here first! If it doesn't, there's no need to remember...

No, she hasn't

And the well-known book is The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. I'm going to have to re-watch and look more carefully at the picture and see if the sex of the person with the tattoo is clear. This could all be a red herring - a lesbian affair being a sideline to the main plot.

The coxswain could be guilty of harassment/abuse/rape of the women on board (attempting to kiss the uninterested MO) rather than this being part of the murder plot.

GrandmasNightgown · 06/09/2021 08:57

OTOH - anyone else think that if Dot grew a beard he'd look quite a bit like the coxswain?

Tulipomania · 06/09/2021 08:59
  1. It's obvious that the man with the dragon tattoo is the coxswain - I thought it was going to be him at the outset and was waiting for the reveal.
  1. "I'm not prepared" is a reference to her not having enough of her anti-anxiety/depression meds with her on board. (Borrowing heavily from Homeland there).

I think it's a bit meh now.

Palavah · 06/09/2021 09:04

Are you serious? They're clearly in a relationship, albeit she was pissed off with him because he didn't tell her about Burke having the photo so when he went to kiss her she offered her cheek instead. That's not rape/sexual harrassment.

GrandmasNightgown · 06/09/2021 09:07

@Palavah - I'll watch again!!

(I was quite tired last night, so might have stuffed up royally!)

Haudyourwheesht · 06/09/2021 09:21

@beigebrownblue

Are you very happy with a nuclear submarine being up there in Scotland and all that that entails?

Very familiar with many, many people who are not happy with that one.

Regardless of how many television series that enables someone to produce and profit from...

Some of us have some regard for the Nuclear Non Proliferation Treaty.

Some of us remember the spirit of Greenham.

The series is certainly not changing my anti- trident stance, that's for sure. And I certainly don't want it an hour away from me.
Blondeshavemorefun · 06/09/2021 09:46

What a lot of replies.

I think she was preg at funeral but lost baby , maybe due to drugs

Tattoo bloke was in relationship with doc but she was pissed off coz he sent the pic to him , hence turned her cheek

And yes I would have circles round car park. Got to top then down again and if need be up again till back up there

I grew up next to Faslane, as a side note....

Egghead68 · 06/09/2021 09:54

What did people think about it locally, @Piggywaspushed?

Booknooks · 06/09/2021 09:58

I wasn't overly impressed by the episode last night. I feel like it's going to drag on for more than just this series (not a spoiler as not seen anything that alludes to that, but assuming from the background they're delving into etc), and seems like there's too much going on elsewhere to build much suspense in the sub, which seems a really wasted opportunity. I'll watch the rest of the series, but not holding out hope of it getting any better.
