The six-part drama from World Productions (Line Of Duty, The Pembrokeshire Murders, Save Me, Bodyguard) stars Suranne Jones, Rose Leslie, Shaun Evans, Martin Compston and Paterson Joseph.

When a crew member is found dead on board the Trident nuclear submarine HMS Vigil, police in Scotland are called in to investigate. The catch? The UK’s nuclear deterrent must remain unbroken, so the submarine stays on patrol and Detective Chief Inspector Amy Silva (Suranne Jones) must go aboard to begin an investigation. Although the death was written off as an accidental overdose, Amy suspects foul play. But when the crew close ranks in the face of Amy’s questioning, a new threat overshadows her inquiry.

Vigil
Vigil’s stellar ensemble cast also features Anjli Mohindra, Connor Swindells, Adam James, Gary Lewis, Stephen Dillane, Lolita Chakrabarti, Daniel Portman, Lorne MacFadyen and Lauren Lyle.

The fictional six-part series is written and created by Bafta nominated writer Tom Edge, with episodes by Ed Macdonald and Chandni Lakhani. It is directed by Bafta winner James Strong, and Bafta nominee Isabelle Sieb. Vigil is produced by Angie Daniell, executive produced by Simon Heath and Jake Lushington for World Productions, Gaynor Holmes for the BBC, James Strong and Tom Edge.

Vigil
Vigil is set and was filmed in Scotland, and is supported by the National Lottery through Screen Scotland. International distribution is handled by ITV Studios.

Well.

That episode moved things on just a wee bit.

Cuck00soup · 05/09/2021 22:13

I sure as hell wouldn't go to the top floor & then exit my vehicle...

KillingMeDeftly · 05/09/2021 22:16

@viques

If I was being followed by mysterious people in an SUV I think I would head for a police station, not a multi-storey car park at night which is likely to be deserted.
Well quite. And on a similar note, if I'd been Jade I wouldn't have agreed to meet a stranger after dark on a lonely road by a loch!
HenriettaBadger · 05/09/2021 22:16

Good episode. It's ramping up now!

So is the guy who was transferred to Bahrain the one who accidentally killed the 2 contractors and blew up the boat? I keep losing his name - Harmsworth?

I knew coxswain was being too nicey nice with her. But is it really him? I reckon the group killer theory is looking quite strong. Or is it all a cover up ordered from on high a la LoD?

EsmaCannonball · 05/09/2021 22:16

The coded messages are hilarious. 'The dead guy's girlfriend has been murdered! The crew were on LSD and someone covered it up! There's a compromising photo of the doctor with a man who (oops, better make this bit a secret) ALSO LIKES THAT BOOK I LIKE (wink, wink).' Alan Turing could have put his feet up dealing with that one.

You'd think they'd keep the guns somewhere safer than the sweetie cupboard, where any old passing drunk could get hold of them. (Jesus, I'm starting to have a lot of sympathy for that snooty XO. They should have let him go the full Captain Bligh on the lot of them.)

Piggywaspushed · 05/09/2021 22:16

Is anyone else on this thread from Glasgow/ The Clyde ?

That was one hell of a peculiar journey from the Clyde Tunnel to Renfrew Street...!

He put in a code to open the cabinet. How did he know the code???
Piggywaspushed · 05/09/2021 22:18

Harmison.

Pebble21uk · 05/09/2021 22:21

I think you're right that she might pregnant... and now she's staying on Vigil for three weeks she'll run out of Paroxetine, which will be a blessing in disguise maybe, given she was asked at the Drs re taking the drug in pregnancy...

But - that would mean she started seeing Rosie Leslie pretty quickly after his death which doesn't seem to tie in.

Maybe she lost a baby??

Okay - give up - I'm confusing myself (but just like to say in my previous post I did say the daughter would probably be with grandparents, so I called something right! Grin)

EsmaCannonball · 05/09/2021 22:23

I don't think the guy who transferred to Bahrain killed the contractors as such. It was something to do with the coolant on the reactor failing (I think, I'm not Nils Bohr) and he failed to report it because he was drunk and/or high and sleeping on duty.

And the car park she went into is actually on Waterloo Street, rather than Renfrew Street :)

Is anyone else terrified by the shots of the submarine under water? They are awful.

Good episode, I really wish I could binge watch.

beigebrownblue · 05/09/2021 22:24

Are you very happy with a nuclear submarine being up there in Scotland and all that that entails?

Very familiar with many, many people who are not happy with that one.

Regardless of how many television series that enables someone to produce and profit from...

Some of us have some regard for the Nuclear Non Proliferation Treaty.

Some of us remember the spirit of Greenham.

mum2jakie · 05/09/2021 22:25

Good episode. Few people on this thread had identified the friendly Cox as having something to hide! I can't imagine she would have been sent alone on a submarine murder investigation if it was only a matter of weeks since her partner had died? The inclusion of the questions about pregnancy did seem to be hinting at that though?

I thought the choice of multi story carpark was also a daft place of safety too! Can't wait for the next episode ..

thedarkling · 05/09/2021 22:25

There's definitely a bit of an orient express vibe, all the main characters on the sub are a bit dodge so far for one reason or another. What happened to the guy who was ill last week? If he's been poisoned shouldn't they be doing something about it, is he just lying in his bunk somewhere quietly expiring? (I may have missed this!)

thedarkling · 05/09/2021 22:27

Yes, totally pointless!
Ekofisk · 05/09/2021 22:28

Silva might have been pregnant at the funeral (she was clutching her belly?) but surely she can’t be pregnant now? She’s had time to have and end a relationship with her colleague since then?

And yes to the message being really open about some things and cryptic about others.

AngeloMysterioso · 05/09/2021 22:29

That’s exactly what I said to DH! Utterly ridiculous.

CoronaPeroni · 05/09/2021 22:31

I wondered if there was actually back up coming? Be interesting to see if they turn up at the multi-storey before MI5 leave

Ekofisk · 05/09/2021 22:32

And how did the RN manage to cover up the two US contractors being scalded to death by pretending that they drowned in the deep water dock?

Gazelda · 05/09/2021 22:32

When she said to Walsh that if he fired the shot, there'd be no way back. I took that as reference to her taking the meds despite knowing they might affect her pregnancy. And once she started taking them, it was too late to change her mind to save the pregnancy.

EsmaCannonball · 05/09/2021 22:39

I am enjoying it but it is one of those programmes where the characters behave in a way that keeps the drama ramped up, rather than a way that makes sense. Maybe driving into a multi-storey car park when a sinister car is tailing you is the new going into a dark cellar when you hear a mysterious noise.

SpindleWhorl · 05/09/2021 22:57

@Ekofisk

And how did the RN manage to cover up the two US contractors being scalded to death by pretending that they drowned in the deep water dock?
Indeed. That makes no sense whatsoever. The US would have conducted autopsies and an investigation. 'Cooked alive'? I think even I could spot the difference between that and accidental drowning.

And the cooked bodies would be radioactive.

RoseAndGeranium · 05/09/2021 23:05

I read the pregnancy thing as accentuating her grief and the insensitivity of that ineffectual GP — i.e. it felt especially tragic that she was being asked if she could be pregnant (as her de facto child had just been taken away) or might get pregnant (as her partner had just died). If she was pregnant I bet she didn’t know and only found out when it was too late (after baby very damaged by meds?). Surely that would be too bleak even for Suranne and the Beeb though...?

Ekofisk · 05/09/2021 23:07

And the cooked bodies would be radioactive.

They would indeed if it was the cooling water - see K-19: The Widowmaker movie Smile
