The six-part drama from World Productions (Line Of Duty, The Pembrokeshire Murders, Save Me, Bodyguard) stars Suranne Jones, Rose Leslie, Shaun Evans, Martin Compston and Paterson Joseph.

When a crew member is found dead on board the Trident nuclear submarine HMS Vigil, police in Scotland are called in to investigate. The catch? The UK’s nuclear deterrent must remain unbroken, so the submarine stays on patrol and Detective Chief Inspector Amy Silva (Suranne Jones) must go aboard to begin an investigation. Although the death was written off as an accidental overdose, Amy suspects foul play. But when the crew close ranks in the face of Amy’s questioning, a new threat overshadows her inquiry.

Vigil
Vigil’s stellar ensemble cast also features Anjli Mohindra, Connor Swindells, Adam James, Gary Lewis, Stephen Dillane, Lolita Chakrabarti, Daniel Portman, Lorne MacFadyen and Lauren Lyle.

The fictional six-part series is written and created by Bafta nominated writer Tom Edge, with episodes by Ed Macdonald and Chandni Lakhani. It is directed by Bafta winner James Strong, and Bafta nominee Isabelle Sieb. Vigil is produced by Angie Daniell, executive produced by Simon Heath and Jake Lushington for World Productions, Gaynor Holmes for the BBC, James Strong and Tom Edge.

Vigil
Vigil is set and was filmed in Scotland, and is supported by the National Lottery through Screen Scotland. International distribution is handled by ITV Studios.

@BoreOfWhabylon - and how they have a huge presence ( submarines ) - but I find them sinister. Grin

BoreOfWhabylon · 03/09/2021 04:47

Well yes, but that is part of their fascination!

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 03/09/2021 06:49

@EsmaCannonball

Apparently the public reaction means the BBC are looking at a Series Two. Will Suranne be zapped to a murder on the International Space Station? Stuck in a lift in Blackpool Tower? A walk-in industrial fridge?
Martin Compston now kicking himself for agreeing to play the guy who was killed off almost before the opening credits had finished rolling!
balloonsintrees · 03/09/2021 07:00

@GrandmasNightgown

DH thinks the coxswain is the bad'un. I still prefer my theory of captain and/or medic. But what both theories have in common is that they are roles which are not tied into watch timings, and the people can be anywhere on board. Applies to XO as well
Yep, defo think baby Morse is manipulating the whole thing (I'm sorry, Shaun Evans will always be baby Morse to me!)
HenriettaBadger · 03/09/2021 08:42

Interesting if they do have a 2nd series, I wonder if it will be on a submarine still or somewhere equally "locked room" as I think it's that premise that is why it works so well. I suppose we'll have to wait and see what happens in the rest of the series.
And yes, baby Morse is being way too helpful and nice. But it would break my heart a bit if he's the baddie!

CoronaPeroni · 03/09/2021 08:46

They couldn't have another series as it would be so unlikely for another heinous crime to happen on the same sub. Especially if SJ was the investigator.

Yes, they would have to decide if they were setting up a submarine version of NCIS

Or if they were sending DCI Silva into a series of unusual, closed, cut-off communities?

merryhellbrokeloose · 03/09/2021 09:32

I'm way more interested in the Naval/Military angle than the DCI Silva angle.

I really hope we have more dramas set in unusual places

JoyDivisionOvenGlovesx · 03/09/2021 10:19

As it’s called Vigil, surely any second series would need to involve that boat??

Unless SJ’s character marries a Mr/Ms Vigil and changes her name Hmm

Palavah · 03/09/2021 10:51

@KillingMeDeftly

I'm really enjoying it but Suranne'a eyebrows are very distracting. They almost deserving billing of their own 😆

It's also interesting to do the "who's been in what?" game - I counted 3 Downton alumni, 3 Game of Thrones and 2 Outlander!

Whos the 3rd? I counted Rose Leslie, guy in beanie hat looking menacing at the anti-nuclear camp. Who else?
BoreOfWhabylon · 03/09/2021 14:22

They could have a prequel, thus dispensing with Gurner Jones Smile

I like that idea!! Though I'm not sure Martin Compston could fit any more filming in, what with Line of Duty 6, The Rig, Traces and Our House all happening around the same time. He's a busy bee alright, which is great news! Not that I'm obsessed or anything, no!
Taswama · 03/09/2021 14:46

Watched ep1 earlier this week, intending to watch ep2 at weekend. But have had to watch ep2 today so I can read this!

Xiaoxiong · 03/09/2021 17:20

Er...for anyone watching (or re-watching), does anyone know where her boots are from...I may be slightly coveting them!

I tried to google but of course all you get is endless references to "Das Boot" Grin

KillingMeDeftly · 03/09/2021 17:52

@Palavah I'm sure I spotted 3 but now I'm not so sure!

If they do, I think it will be an undercover angles, going into closed communities similar to a submarine. There will be a link to the activists somewhere into another series. One of the guys in the group looked suspicious to me.

@Palavah
. The admiral at the base in charge of all the subs is Stephen Dillane who played Stannis BaratheonSmile

KillingMeDeftly · 03/09/2021 22:19

I think @Palavah meant Downton alumni but I can't for the life of me remember who the third was!

Haudyourwheesht · 03/09/2021 22:38
@Palavah I'm sure I spotted 3 but now I'm not so sure!
Daniel Portman - Poldrick (??) from GOT was the guy who beat up Martin Compston and spilled pee on Suranne's hands.

KillingMeDeftly · 03/09/2021 23:28

To clarify:

GoT is Ygritte, Stannis and Podrick.

Downton is Gwen the maid and Mr Lang the shell-shocked valet.

Outlander is Marsali (plays Jade) and Billy Elliott's dad.

BasiliskStare · 04/09/2021 03:33

@EsmaCannonball - I'm rather loving the idea of a locked room murder mystery in a large walk in industrial fridge which is at the top of Blackpool Tower - tragically am not able to come up with a plot . There could be a tense scene where she kicks on the doors to be rescued but is not heard because of the Strictly come dancing music.

BunnytheFriendlyDragon · 04/09/2021 05:26

I really enjoyed the first two episodes

mum2jakie · 04/09/2021 08:59

Finally caught up with the second episode and really enjoying this one. Not sure if I'd want a second series though as this is a six parter. Very interesting setting for a murder mystery though.

cheesemarmitepanini · 04/09/2021 09:02

I'd like to see more dramas from the BBC set in unusual places. More communes!

MeOldBamboo · 04/09/2021 09:28

Hi all, following this with interest as I was completely gripped by these first two episodes. I also have a theory that the chap who came on board with her who missed hearing the enemy vessel is possibly police backup. Why would he have made a mistake otherwise. Either that or he’s a spy.
And agree about the cook. I mean, if it’s poison, what a good way to administer it…
