The six-part drama from World Productions (Line Of Duty, The Pembrokeshire Murders, Save Me, Bodyguard) stars Suranne Jones, Rose Leslie, Shaun Evans, Martin Compston and Paterson Joseph.

When a crew member is found dead on board the Trident nuclear submarine HMS Vigil, police in Scotland are called in to investigate. The catch? The UK’s nuclear deterrent must remain unbroken, so the submarine stays on patrol and Detective Chief Inspector Amy Silva (Suranne Jones) must go aboard to begin an investigation. Although the death was written off as an accidental overdose, Amy suspects foul play. But when the crew close ranks in the face of Amy’s questioning, a new threat overshadows her inquiry.

Vigil
Vigil’s stellar ensemble cast also features Anjli Mohindra, Connor Swindells, Adam James, Gary Lewis, Stephen Dillane, Lolita Chakrabarti, Daniel Portman, Lorne MacFadyen and Lauren Lyle.

The fictional six-part series is written and created by Bafta nominated writer Tom Edge, with episodes by Ed Macdonald and Chandni Lakhani. It is directed by Bafta winner James Strong, and Bafta nominee Isabelle Sieb. Vigil is produced by Angie Daniell, executive produced by Simon Heath and Jake Lushington for World Productions, Gaynor Holmes for the BBC, James Strong and Tom Edge.

Vigil
Vigil is set and was filmed in Scotland, and is supported by the National Lottery through Screen Scotland. International distribution is handled by ITV Studios.

It'll be fun if the OP is deleted!

LavenderAskew · 01/09/2021 15:08

@Booknooks

I can't really get past a civilian police officer being allowed to wander around a nuclear sub unescorted, but I know that's not the point of the programme! It seems okay so far, trying to look out for little clues and stuff but I'm sure it won't become clear until the end.
I don't know really, I mean it's fairly obvious the navy doesn't want her there and definitely don't want her wandering around. But it was explained why she was there and came across (to me anyway) that it was unusual that she had to be
Ulysses · 01/09/2021 16:25

I saw the extended press release too and was wondering if it was a spoiler or not. It does help join a couple of dots though. Saying no more!

Blondeshavemorefun · 01/09/2021 16:31

I don’t think my op was a spoiler

The whole point of vigil is that someone is killed and by who and why

I haven't read the whole thread yet (still watching ep. 2), but I have a Q:

What are the black tags the submariners wear on their shirt pockets?

I'm guessing some kind of monitor, CO, CO2 or radiation maybe?

Ekofisk · 01/09/2021 21:45

Channel 5 at 10pm tonight (1st Sept) has a programme all about life on a nuclear submarine - HMS Vengeance.

Pebble21uk · 01/09/2021 22:08

I don't think there's anything that mysterious about the step-daughter no longer being with her... surely if her father died (and potentially her mother too if he was widowed) then as they weren't yet married she would go to live with next of kin... either mother or grandparents... maybe an aunt, rather than 'woman Dad was going to marry' . There's nothing to say she doesn't still see her.

GrandmasNightgown · 02/09/2021 08:59

@Blondeshavemorefun

Least the captain seems to be honest
I think it's him wot dunnit. Possibly with an accomplice, if the timings don't all quite work - maybe affair with the doctor, who seemed curiously incurious about establishing the cause of death, and whose co-operation might have been needed to avoid offloading the body for PM when they took the DCI on board.

The XO was meant to be looking in to his incompetence, so he could only have got to where he is now by being the cat's paw of 'dot-dot-dot-dot' ie whoever is the head of the establishment conspiracy

I haven't RTFT but is anyone else annoyed by the crappy CPR? Patting someone's chest a few times and then giving up is not CPR. CPR is fast, rib-breaking pushes and you don't stop until help arrives to take over or you're too exhausted or distressed to continue.

That did bug me. But I decided it was just one of many unrealistic scenarios so am just going with it. 😂

No, not really. It was being done on a actor in full health, so it's either not right CPR or done on a dummy and the person looks not right.

Didn't spot any black tags @Photosymphysis - will look out for them!

HildegardNightingale · 02/09/2021 15:44

XOs are never popular. They are there to do all the nasty work.
Also no way would one of the sonar guys miss that large tanker. That would have been a disciplinary for sure.

Youhavetoquitwhileyoureahead · 02/09/2021 18:23

"I have a feeling the child grew up to become Goldenacre, the Rose Leslie character, or have I got that all wrong?"

Though Kirsten in ep 1 was telling Suranne about 'my dad' - what his favourite song was, and also that he was from Stornoway - which Suranne would already have known if 'my dad' was in fact also Ian? Oh and in the car Suranne told Kirsten that Ian's parents were from somewhere round here - which Kirsten would probably have known if she was Ian's daughter. BUT - why did Suranne's boss look so worried when Suranne said she wanted Kirsten as her on-shore contact? That was definitely meant to tell us something...

GrandmasNightgown · 02/09/2021 19:37

I thought the purpose of that bit was to establish familiarity with morse code. As well as thinking 'four dots' (well it is LOD team!) I thought that it's going to be used when someone is trapped and has to bash out a message on a submarine wall.

If there was a concern about nominating her as her contact, possibly it's because their history is known and they're aware they can use a privacy language that no-one else will be able to understand (either/both naval or wider establishment conspirators who are trying to limit the investigation hoping for whitewash)

Subjectivist · 02/09/2021 21:08

When the flat got broken into and the police turned up they just drove straight past the guys getting away on the motorbike

agedmother · 02/09/2021 21:22

I predict a switcheroo - the Coxswain is revealed to be a real bad 'un and XO helps nail him. What's interfering with the boat's functions - is it the craft trailing them behind, or sabotage on board? Why only mess with the reactors for a bit?

GrandmasNightgown · 02/09/2021 21:26

DH thinks the coxswain is the bad'un. I still prefer my theory of captain and/or medic. But what both theories have in common is that they are roles which are not tied into watch timings, and the people can be anywhere on board. Applies to XO as well

GrandmasNightgown · 02/09/2021 21:30

Presumably DCI Silva is now suspecting a different toxin as cause of death. Given symptoms, it would be a nerve agent? (like novichok?)

So possibly more victims, from contact with contaminated items?

Blondeshavemorefun · 02/09/2021 21:34

Def think captain is innocent

I do love the fact this is on weekly. That we get
A week to chat abs throw ideas about

I think it was the female sailor who took over when Burke was sent off. She will be in cahoots with others though.

CoronaPeroni · 02/09/2021 22:19

Very enjoyable so far. I love a series based in a world that I didn't really know existed (sheltered life). I think the doc is a bit suspect or at least was told to not look too deep for Burke's cause of death. Can't wait for ep 3!

Blondeshavemorefun · 02/09/2021 23:19

Yes the doc should have seen the poisoning on face

Still not sure how a sub has a female doctor when 8 woman And hundreds of men

OP posts:
TheChosenTwo · 02/09/2021 23:47

She’s definitely in on something, she was quick to say that the body would have a sustained injuries from falling out of bed and from the cpr (which would be true I realise) and reiterated that they had worked very hard on him but at the same time didn’t seem remotely intrigued/disturbed about the police woman’s theory that there might be more to it nor bothered enough to help with her investigations.
Will be interesting to see how this unfolds next week.

EsmaCannonball · 03/09/2021 00:01

Apparently the public reaction means the BBC are looking at a Series Two. Will Suranne be zapped to a murder on the International Space Station? Stuck in a lift in Blackpool Tower? A walk-in industrial fridge?

BoreOfWhabylon · 03/09/2021 00:19

But it's the submarines that are the big hit, not Suranne Jones!
