The six-part drama from World Productions (Line Of Duty, The Pembrokeshire Murders, Save Me, Bodyguard) stars Suranne Jones, Rose Leslie, Shaun Evans, Martin Compston and Paterson Joseph.

When a crew member is found dead on board the Trident nuclear submarine HMS Vigil, police in Scotland are called in to investigate. The catch? The UK’s nuclear deterrent must remain unbroken, so the submarine stays on patrol and Detective Chief Inspector Amy Silva (Suranne Jones) must go aboard to begin an investigation. Although the death was written off as an accidental overdose, Amy suspects foul play. But when the crew close ranks in the face of Amy’s questioning, a new threat overshadows her inquiry.

Vigil
Vigil’s stellar ensemble cast also features Anjli Mohindra, Connor Swindells, Adam James, Gary Lewis, Stephen Dillane, Lolita Chakrabarti, Daniel Portman, Lorne MacFadyen and Lauren Lyle.

The fictional six-part series is written and created by Bafta nominated writer Tom Edge, with episodes by Ed Macdonald and Chandni Lakhani. It is directed by Bafta winner James Strong, and Bafta nominee Isabelle Sieb. Vigil is produced by Angie Daniell, executive produced by Simon Heath and Jake Lushington for World Productions, Gaynor Holmes for the BBC, James Strong and Tom Edge.

Vigil
Vigil is set and was filmed in Scotland, and is supported by the National Lottery through Screen Scotland. International distribution is handled by ITV Studios.

@cheesemarmitepanini

I'd like to see more dramas from the BBC set in unusual places. More communes!
Yes, also Antarctica, space station, travelling circus, any closed community really would be good
copernicium · 04/09/2021 14:24

@TheChosenTwo but that could just because she knows how the navy works and values her career (/life!)

TheChosenTwo · 04/09/2021 14:41

@copernicium absolutely, but she knows more than she’s letting on!

Akire · 04/09/2021 16:55

Just saw the first two, was put off thinking looked very creepy on advert but quite gentle suspense drama. Very promising indeed although have wait next few.

Is something will watch again so can pick up more of the detail hard when through in ship talk, lots of names and hard tell them apart. You almost have take notes who everyone is.

Knew camp girl was a goner but can’t have gone down well green wellie type to be seeing nuclear sub crew. Agree also about back story why? We wouldn’t care about her if she hadn’t lost partner and child?

Taswama · 04/09/2021 20:58

Interesting that both sides are so entrenched in their views - sleeping with the enemy is seen as betrayal.

Akire · 04/09/2021 21:19

I can’t work out why a second sub would be chasing them? To listen in even though Vigil can’t hear or see them? Are they supposed to be say from Russia and waiting for Russia send Missile to UK then second sub can bomb them before they send back?

As for not seeing the liner really??

TheChosenTwo · 04/09/2021 21:37

I honestly don’t think a second sub was behind them at all, I reckon that’s a load of bollocks.

Booknooks · 04/09/2021 21:40

I actually hope there aren't more series of it, as it will drag out like blimmin finding out who H was, although it does seem to be part of a much bigger plot line than just who did this on the sub? Re: the CPR comments, I doubt it's been clumsily put in, wasn't it one of the suspects performing it? There wouldn't be any point doing it properly if a) you know they're dead as you know what killed them, or b) you want them dead. Most programmes tend to show the face of the person administering it don't they to avoid the hassle of having to have a realistic dummy made up!

BunnytheFriendlyDragon · 04/09/2021 21:42

Is ep 3 out tomorrow?

GrandmasNightgown · 04/09/2021 21:43

"Agree also about back story why? We wouldn’t care about her if she hadn’t lost partner and child?"

My theory is so that we understand when she starts having flashbacks or done other sort of breakdown,

Remember she's on meds, and was expecting to be there for 3 days. There was some talk of leaving her there for 3 weeks, during which time they'll run out and she'll head into a crisis. They probably don't have her medication as routine stock on board, and if the doctor is a baddie then it could get v unpleasant (deliberately aggravated, perhaps?)

@GrandmasNightgown I reckon the doctor would have her medication onboard, she said it was for depression and anxiety, they must have cases like that underwater. Or maybe that’s me, I know I would feel very depressed without seeing daylight and definitely very anxious as being in a submarine!
Although I’m very suspicious of the doctor, maybe she won’t give her the medication when she runs out (which she definitely will if she stays there longer than she planned to) or even gives her something different.

MH issues can disqualify you from submarine service.

It's not an issue for most of the military, but there are certain specified roles for which additional health clearance is required.

Submarines can't possibly carry all drugs in frequent use. They would have any known requirements for crew (held centrally by the MO) and a range used to cover conditions they think they might need to deal with (fairly comprehensive, but obvs not all encompassing)

LadyEloise1 · 05/09/2021 08:39

Thanks for the thread @Blondeshavemorefun - I had recorded Episode 1 and 2 and watched them both last night. It's really great to read other people's opinions / thoughts on the series.
There is such an abundance of choice re viewing on all the different channels, Netflix, Sky Atlantic, Amazon Prime etc that your friends and family often aren't watching a series or haven't seen a programme so you can't discuss it in real life.

I'm enjoying it. Suranne Jones is great in it ( I hated the second series of Dr. Foster ).
One niggle - would the Rose Leslie character have been allowed interview Martin Compston's girlfriend alone and have done the search of his flat alone ?

I too am unsure about the young girl. Is she a daughter or a step daughter- initially I thought step daughter but she called her Mummy Hmm

Looking forward to tonight's episode.

QueenofDestruction · 05/09/2021 09:55

Is Rose Leslie the little girl and not a girlfriend

KillingMeDeftly · 05/09/2021 10:14

I doubt it. She's not that much younger than SJ!

LadyEloise1 · 05/09/2021 10:14

I wondered that too. But is it a bit of a stretch - both police officers in the same area ???

KillingMeDeftly · 05/09/2021 10:14

There's only 9 years between the two actresses.

Pl242 · 05/09/2021 10:26

I thought the little girl was not her biological child. I don’t think you point out physical similarities between a mother and daughter. There were also a couple of mentions of his parents so I assumed they got custody.

It would be a big twist if rose Leslie’s character was the girl grown up. But I don’t think enough time has passed, there is hints of another type of relationship there and I think the latter was what provoked her boss to raise eyebrows at the suggestion she was the on land partner. Possibly also that he didn’t think she was the most suitable for the job.

KillingMeDeftly · 05/09/2021 10:43

They looked pretty intimate in the flashback scene. Not sure that was very stepmother/stepdaughter!

iklboo · 05/09/2021 10:58

@KillingMeDeftly @Palavah - Big Boss navy man is Stannis Baratheon

LavenderAskew · 05/09/2021 11:01

It's possibly to have 9 years between step mum and step daughter but I don't think that was depicted in the flashback.

Also don't think the young girl had red hair did she?

KillingMeDeftly · 05/09/2021 11:20

Oh I know @LavenderAskew but the girl was maybe 10 or 11 at the most in the flashbacks and SJ certainly didn't look 20!

LavenderAskew · 05/09/2021 11:26

No - there was no attempt to make SJ younger - which has been done (not always successfully!!) with clothing or hairstyle, bit there was no suggestion of it in that flashback.

Also agree they are a bit too intimate for a step relationship

SkiingIsHeaven · 05/09/2021 11:29

What is wrong with Suranne Jones?

Lots of people saying that they don't like her. She seems ok to me.

Has she murdered children in real or something?
