The six-part drama from World Productions (Line Of Duty, The Pembrokeshire Murders, Save Me, Bodyguard) stars Suranne Jones, Rose Leslie, Shaun Evans, Martin Compston and Paterson Joseph.

When a crew member is found dead on board the Trident nuclear submarine HMS Vigil, police in Scotland are called in to investigate. The catch? The UK’s nuclear deterrent must remain unbroken, so the submarine stays on patrol and Detective Chief Inspector Amy Silva (Suranne Jones) must go aboard to begin an investigation. Although the death was written off as an accidental overdose, Amy suspects foul play. But when the crew close ranks in the face of Amy’s questioning, a new threat overshadows her inquiry.

Vigil
Vigil’s stellar ensemble cast also features Anjli Mohindra, Connor Swindells, Adam James, Gary Lewis, Stephen Dillane, Lolita Chakrabarti, Daniel Portman, Lorne MacFadyen and Lauren Lyle.

The fictional six-part series is written and created by Bafta nominated writer Tom Edge, with episodes by Ed Macdonald and Chandni Lakhani. It is directed by Bafta winner James Strong, and Bafta nominee Isabelle Sieb. Vigil is produced by Angie Daniell, executive produced by Simon Heath and Jake Lushington for World Productions, Gaynor Holmes for the BBC, James Strong and Tom Edge.

Vigil
Vigil is set and was filmed in Scotland, and is supported by the National Lottery through Screen Scotland. International distribution is handled by ITV Studios.

I caught up last night on Monday’s episode but couldn’t work out how they had such a close call with the bloody great ship they nearly ran into - can anyone who does understand explain how they didn’t notice it in time to avoid it without panicking?

On another note, if lovely baby Morse turns out to be evil, I’ll be very sad (but unsurprised because he’s literally the only helpful and kind one at the moment and thus has to be the most obvious suspect).

Piggywaspushed · 01/09/2021 07:35

I am hopeful he is a goodie. I feel the scriptwriters wanted a strong female central character but then decided all protagonists need a helper : so she has one onshore and one offshore. I just think she has won him over. She needs someone to explain to her (and us) the submariner's ways.

But then, someone poisoned MC...

LavenderAskew · 01/09/2021 08:26

@Walkingtheplank

I think Arsenic is green - although seems a bit Agatha Christie as a weapon. But then someone thinking they've killed someone when someone else did it is quite Christie too.
Funny you mentioned agatha Christie, because i came to the conclusion last night that there were a load of them involved in it - to set up the XO

None of them seem particularly fond of him - he's unpleasant and seemingly there through nepotism - the comment from the Commander about have the coxswain instead of the XO with Silva so not to not lumbering her with him.

So in my theory there's a load of them involved in it all - which is very Agatha Christie!!

the80sweregreat · 01/09/2021 09:10

All detectives , male or female, have to have had a troubled past ! Be it in tv or in a book they all have back stories or messed up somehow along the way.
None of them are 'normal!' 😂

CormoranStrike · 01/09/2021 09:15

I’m calling it as the lovely and helpful coxswain.

Randomuser9876 · 01/09/2021 09:21

Yes! The coxswain must be involved.

Did anyone see "Touch of Cloth"? It's absolutely amazing... A police procedural piss take in which Suranne Jones plays a bisexual detective. This has all the same tropes.

Yes! Touch of Cloth was brilliant.

Loving the goat-rail, fascinating stuff!
I agree the coxswain is being way too helpful, and is therefore very suspicious.
It may have been on the other thread someone mentioned an Agatha Christie-style group of murderers. Given the significant looks that they all keep giving each other, it's definitely possible, I think? The XO doesn't seem very popular. Mind you, neither was Burke. Or is that just misdirection? Hmmm, may need to rewatch the first two again...

I have a feeling the child grew up to become Goldenacre, the Rose Leslie character, or have I got that all wrong?

I think they are secret step parent stepdaughter, reunited long after the dad died

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 01/09/2021 10:21

From the way she keeps reliving the accident, I would suspect that it wasn't far enough back in SJ's past for Rose Leslie's character to be the (step) daughter grown-up.

But anything's possible in these dramas!

I got the impression there was something sexual between them... so surely not step mum and step daughter?!
CormoranStrike · 01/09/2021 10:32

I didn’t see a sexual element necessarily, though it could be. I saw a close relationship finding its way, hence wondering if she was the step daughter.

Didn't she say she wouldn't send erotic messages? Maybe that was said as a fed herring. I guess we'll find out

the80sweregreat · 01/09/2021 12:25

I think they were an item as the flashbacks show them being close and living in her flat.
I don't think they have been separated for that long? Kirsten seemed upset with her still in episode one when they were going the submarine base in the car.

Booknooks · 01/09/2021 12:37

I can't really get past a civilian police officer being allowed to wander around a nuclear sub unescorted, but I know that's not the point of the programme! It seems okay so far, trying to look out for little clues and stuff but I'm sure it won't become clear until the end.

I was curious about that too, the equipment on board is so sensitive it would have been pinging about that like crazy. I note the guy said oh I didn't hear it as its loud or something, but I wonder if it's going to turn out to be a clue that some of the systems have been tampered with or something? They're assuming that there's a boat about that they didn't detect re the trawler too, whereas I reckon it'll be an enemy within type thing.
the80sweregreat · 01/09/2021 12:54

The collision sensors in my standard car goes off when it's miles away from hitting anything at all.
I would have thought that a huge complex submarine like vigil would have loads going off everywhere !

Egghead68 · 01/09/2021 13:41

I think they can’t send out signals like ? radar and sonar to detect things as then they themselves could be detected from those signals.

Ekofisk · 01/09/2021 14:28

According to this article subs running on silent mode don’t use active sonar (sending out sound waves and detecting when they ping back) but use passive sonar (listening for sounds).

Seems that two subs relying on passive sonar bumped into each other a few years back - both running on stealth mode.

But if the ship’s engines were running then they would be really loud?

Ooh this is the first time I’ve been deleted! Exciting Grin

Although soz MNHQ, it’s not actually spoilers as it was all available pre broadcast. Found it:

It doesn't matter, @JoyDivisionOvenGlovesx. The 'no spoilers' rules on No Spoilers threads on Telly Addicts are pretty strict. Absolutely nothing on the thread that hasn't already been broadcast 'live'.

So interviews suggestive of a future plot turn of development are a 'spoiler', even it's in the public domain.

Speculation is fine, though - the crazier the better, usually Smile

Piggywaspushed · 01/09/2021 14:46

Although in true Beeb form that is quite spoilery if pretty obvious ! I don't mind, but spoiler police should maybe not read that attachment.

Piggywaspushed · 01/09/2021 14:47

If you guess what is going to happen and opine on some of these threads you get accused of spoilers. Has been known ...

Well I’d dispute that, since the actual op is the press release Confused. This is just the beefed up version.
