The six-part drama from World Productions (Line Of Duty, The Pembrokeshire Murders, Save Me, Bodyguard) stars Suranne Jones, Rose Leslie, Shaun Evans, Martin Compston and Paterson Joseph.

When a crew member is found dead on board the Trident nuclear submarine HMS Vigil, police in Scotland are called in to investigate. The catch? The UK’s nuclear deterrent must remain unbroken, so the submarine stays on patrol and Detective Chief Inspector Amy Silva (Suranne Jones) must go aboard to begin an investigation. Although the death was written off as an accidental overdose, Amy suspects foul play. But when the crew close ranks in the face of Amy’s questioning, a new threat overshadows her inquiry.

Vigil
Vigil’s stellar ensemble cast also features Anjli Mohindra, Connor Swindells, Adam James, Gary Lewis, Stephen Dillane, Lolita Chakrabarti, Daniel Portman, Lorne MacFadyen and Lauren Lyle.

The fictional six-part series is written and created by Bafta nominated writer Tom Edge, with episodes by Ed Macdonald and Chandni Lakhani. It is directed by Bafta winner James Strong, and Bafta nominee Isabelle Sieb. Vigil is produced by Angie Daniell, executive produced by Simon Heath and Jake Lushington for World Productions, Gaynor Holmes for the BBC, James Strong and Tom Edge.

Vigil
Vigil is set and was filmed in Scotland, and is supported by the National Lottery through Screen Scotland. International distribution is handled by ITV Studios.

So is there a goat on vigil 😂😂

So military animals are ones that provide a service ie. dogs, horses, camels etc. Then there are military mascots who are used for parades etc. For example some goats or penguins. But a goat can be more than a mascot and can be a ranking member for example William Windsor who served as Lance corporal before being demoted to fusilier for misbehaving at the queens birthday.

From what I have read they are all male and are allowed beards! I havent read about one reaching the dizzy heights of Major but it would seem possible!

Well clearly that's whodunnit then!

If some man deliberately spilled his fresh wee on me I'd do more than give it a quick wipe. I'd be scrubbing myself with Jif and wire wool.

I've just pissed myself laughing at the military penguin. The thought of its little marching feet, waddling along the parade ground in time to the military band playing Daft Punk, everyone clapping along and nodding sagely at the same time ...

FreezerBird · 31/08/2021 17:42

I hope she got to do that later; she needed to appear unfazed in front of them all.

Especially as she said he needed to drink more water... must have stank!
putthetubeinthebin · 31/08/2021 18:14

This one has been appointed brigadier!

(Apologies for huge derail but I didn't start it!)

EsmaCannonball · 31/08/2021 18:45

That penguin looks like he's properly inspecting the troops. As someone who dreams of owning a herd of pet goats (I sometimes sit for two hours, looking at pictures of goats on the internet) I am having goat-envy right now.

Aye but if you’re Police you probably get worse on you in the cells every day 🤢

Not keeping up with new posts, but am I the only one who hadn't realised that it was the sub that dragged the fishing boat under the water? Someone just mentioned it in conversation.
Apparently it's based on an actual incident.

Damn it not a member

Wasn't it the sun that was shadowing them that dragged it under?

Blondeshavemorefun · 31/08/2021 19:51

@MrsFin it was the sub behind them that wasn’t on their radar a mile away that did it

That’s why mc was sent to his bed as he wanted vigil to rise to rescue the fisherman and captain said no as wouid show their position to the enemy

OP posts:
TheChosenTwo · 31/08/2021 20:03

But if they knew there was a sub following them under water, the one behind must have known there was one in front surely? Don’t they have radars??
Also, how would the boat behind know if the one in front surfaced? I have no idea of anything to do with submarines but I had the idea that the vigil radar detected the one behind.
Also, I get that the location of the boats (or ships? I forgot the terminology) is top secret but unless there’s actual war breaking out, what is the one behind actually going to do?

Blondeshavemorefun · 31/08/2021 20:20

I think they worked it out when boat got hooked and saw the quickness and direction of boat on graph

I’m quite enjoying this but find it a bit annoying that the police officers are working alone. Surely they have to be partnered with someone for their own protection? I think it would have made the show much more interesting if there were two detectives down in that sub! Also still don’t really understand why civilian police are investigating and not military police.

Why didn't the captain say the enemy were following them

That makes more sense in the context!

Agree. A lone, female police officer would never have been sent to those locations - at sea nor on land.

Ekofisk · 31/08/2021 21:53

I got the impression (I might be wrong) that they didn’t know there was another sub behind them until the fishing boat incident?

Although the fishing boat sonar seemed to show two shapes that the trawlerman thought were fish shoals?

JemimaTab · 01/09/2021 00:07

It’s a bit muddled isn’t it. And I’m not sure what the relevance is, if any, of the main character’s backstory, if but it’s such a cliche (to put it mildly) for a detective to have a traumatic past. I rolled my eyes a bit at that.
Always nice to see Paterson Joseph though. He was brilliant as Johnson. We’re the same age, though unlike me he doesn’t appear to have aged at all in the last 20 years. He was also in The Beach (the movie), and I think he was in the running for Dr Who at one point - when Matt Smith ended up getting the role. I actually think PJ would’ve been pretty good.
But having said that, I’m on this thread mainly for the military goats and penguins. 😂

KingofQueens · 01/09/2021 01:38

@the80sweregreat

When they both managed to get to the side of the lake out of the car , I couldn't help but think of the film ' Gravity ' when Sandra Bullock's character is finally brought down from space and realizes that she is unable to be weightless again! Although submarines and space haven't much in common to be fair.
Submarines and space - the two places I would absolutely refuse to go to ever. Humans weren't meant for space nor deep sea. I'm not having it
