The six-part drama from World Productions (Line Of Duty, The Pembrokeshire Murders, Save Me, Bodyguard) stars Suranne Jones, Rose Leslie, Shaun Evans, Martin Compston and Paterson Joseph.

When a crew member is found dead on board the Trident nuclear submarine HMS Vigil, police in Scotland are called in to investigate. The catch? The UK’s nuclear deterrent must remain unbroken, so the submarine stays on patrol and Detective Chief Inspector Amy Silva (Suranne Jones) must go aboard to begin an investigation. Although the death was written off as an accidental overdose, Amy suspects foul play. But when the crew close ranks in the face of Amy’s questioning, a new threat overshadows her inquiry.

Vigil
Vigil’s stellar ensemble cast also features Anjli Mohindra, Connor Swindells, Adam James, Gary Lewis, Stephen Dillane, Lolita Chakrabarti, Daniel Portman, Lorne MacFadyen and Lauren Lyle.

The fictional six-part series is written and created by Bafta nominated writer Tom Edge, with episodes by Ed Macdonald and Chandni Lakhani. It is directed by Bafta winner James Strong, and Bafta nominee Isabelle Sieb. Vigil is produced by Angie Daniell, executive produced by Simon Heath and Jake Lushington for World Productions, Gaynor Holmes for the BBC, James Strong and Tom Edge.

Vigil
Vigil is set and was filmed in Scotland, and is supported by the National Lottery through Screen Scotland. International distribution is handled by ITV Studios.

Half an hour in and bored to tears. Been looking forward to this since LoD ended.

Good actors, writers, producers... why is it so shit?

@the80sweregreat

My friends ex was in the Royal Navy and had a beard. Not allowed in the army or RAF for some reason ? ( with the army it's because they have to put on gas masks someone told me ?) The white shirt one with the pips was the neighbour in Dr Foster , similar character! Always tends to shout.
Can add here that fire brigade not allowed beards as need to wear breathing apparatus.

Not sure why that would apply to some armed forces and not others though.

Ekofisk · 31/08/2021 10:27

RAF now allows beards too apparently, and the Army under certain conditions:

Royal Air Force personnel will be allowed to grow beards under new rules aiming to promote inclusivity.

There are no plans to revise the rules for facial hair in the Army, where only moustaches are allowed.

Under current rules in the Army, beards are permitted for operational reasons, such as covert operations.

Certain appointments and military ranks, such as Pioneer Sergeants, Drum Majors, Pipe Majors, Bugle Majors and Goat Majors are allowed beards.

Navy personnel hoping to grow a beard currently have to get approval from their commanding officer.

The conversation in the car was very confusing, he said they looked alike which you would only normally say to people related by blood

The way he said it and Amy reacted was like they were amused by that as Amy wasn't actually related to the girl. She did call her mummy but I wasn't sure if that was only when she was scared or if she'd been in her life since she was very young.

DappledThings · 31/08/2021 10:32

@TheRebelle

The conversation in the car was very confusing, he said they looked alike which you would only normally say to people related by blood, but then that the daughter had asked her to marry him and he was talking as though he and the daughter were one team without her, so is she her natural daughter or her step daughter? I presume it was confusing on purpose and there’s more to come from that?
I thought she was the stepdaughter but the father was widowed and so they were pleased that Amy was going to marry him and be a second mother to the girl. The conversation about them looking alike was then joking about that because they aren't actually related.

I think the girl now refuses to see Amy becuase she blames her for her father's death.

Barney McGrew didn't get the memo. Tut.

Piggywaspushed · 31/08/2021 10:35

What on earth is a Goat Major!?

pleasekeeptotheright · 31/08/2021 10:44

"She did call her mummy but I wasn't sure if that was only when she was scared or if she'd been in her life since she was very young."

She shouted for her Mummy, a normal reaction in those circumstances. I didn't think she was calling Amy Mummy

SpindleWhorl · 31/08/2021 10:50

@Piggywaspushed

What on earth is a Goat Major!?
I know we could google it, but it's more fun guessing Grin

Is it the one in the Royal Marines band who wear the skins? Or is that leopard skin?

the80sweregreat · 31/08/2021 10:58

The beard rules have changed a bit then.
My friends ex dh has been out of the Navy for 20 years or more, so I guess things move on.
My son has a beard, but I can't stand them ( he is just too lazy to shave properly)
All these beardy ones on this drama are not doing it for me!

Ekofisk · 31/08/2021 11:14

@Piggywaspushed

What on earth is a Goat Major!?
Keeper of the Regimental Goat?

Perhaps he had to have a matching goatee?

Ekofisk · 31/08/2021 11:16

The beard rules have changed a bit then. My friends ex dh has been out of the Navy for 20 years or more, so I guess things move on.

I used to work with an ex-RN guy in the late 1980s - he reckoned that you could tell the SBS guys because they were the only ones allowed big droopy moustaches.

Piggywaspushed · 31/08/2021 11:17

Just googled it : it literally is the guy who looks after the regimental goat.

Next question.

Why do regiments have goats???

Piggywaspushed · 31/08/2021 11:20

It seems to be a Welsh thing.

There is a pub in Cardiff called The Goat Major and , until the goat retired, it used to make appearances at the rugby..

Every day's a school day!

SpindleWhorl · 31/08/2021 11:22

I was thinking of all this malarkey

VIGIL - starts Sunday 29th Aug. BBC 1 - TV PACE. NO SPOILERS
the80sweregreat · 31/08/2021 11:25

Love goats!
The forces have a lot of history of strange things don't they ? My friends ex did nothing but complain about it , until he retired , then it was ' oh, the good ole days ' on social media etc!
(I'm sure a few retirees have rose tinted glasses. )
Can't be an easy life away from family for ages to be fair.

Tulipomania · 31/08/2021 13:40

I'm disappointed by this, but I'll probably keep watching to the end.

TheRebelle · 31/08/2021 14:15

@DappledThings that’s what I mean, we all saw it and understood different things from the conversation so either it’s poorly written or there’s more to it that we don’t know yet.

the80sweregreat · 31/08/2021 15:02

I guess that Amy was going to marry the man who died , but then she met Kirsten and now the step daughter has disowned her ( or something similar)
Blames her for the car crashing and not being able to rescue him etc.

putthetubeinthebin · 31/08/2021 15:08

I've been reading about goat majors for a good half hour. Fascinating

putthetubeinthebin · 31/08/2021 15:12

Or more specifically, goats in the navy. Apparently they have been considered as ranking members of their regiment. Wonderfully weird.

the80sweregreat · 31/08/2021 15:16

Who knew that goats were such a big thing for the forces?
I certainly didn't.

SpindleWhorl · 31/08/2021 15:17

So is the goat a major, and allowed a beard? It'd be hard not to, really.

Are they male or female goats?

These are actually genuine questions Grin

Blondeshavemorefun · 31/08/2021 15:22

We’ve adopted a goat. Called Winston 😂

Winston is a sweetie , blonds!
I went to visit a goat farm once in Devon : was so nice and they are great to have ( if you've the space etc)
Alas, I doubt I'll ever own one myself.
( have to join up or win the lottery )
