Tennis: Enjoying the last throes of the grass court season

Jane it is.

I had been really looking forward to Rafa coming back- and he had had a good week. Then lost the final. He did ok the rest of the year (less said about Wimbledon).

I agree with Peter about the way doubles is sometimes treated.

At RG, the men's doubles final was brilliant (and not jjust because I have a soft spot for PHH and Mahut). The atmosphere was great, the crowd were really into it- and they had all stuck around after the women's final. It was a really great final. Even with the Eurovision singing. .

I feel like I used to get to see more of it back in the 80's but then a lot of the top singles players were in the doubles too so maybe there was more interest in putting it on tv. It's all hidden away on the red buttons now.

I watched Mission Impossible-Fallout last night and Tom Cruise was climbing all over some of those buildings they just showed. I don't know how he does it.

Jane I think you might be right- it is a shame. Sometimes the doubles can be more entertaining. I suppose years ago there was a financial need for the big names to play doubles as well- because they didn't really get paid much .

When they were talking about the women's final in 1961, and said about Christine Truman getting a £15 voucher as a runner up- I thought- wow- times have really changed!

Wow! It was hardly worth her while.

I am not sure where the voucher was for. I suppose with inflation, £15 might be worth a bit more after 60 years...

but it's not £900,000 is it? (I think that's about what the runner up gets this year- it's gone down a bit this year!).

Petch would be complaining by now and waffling about how shortening the points and keeping the matches to an hour is so much better.

But he is a philistine.

It would be better if they put this on after the women's final and put the women's doubles after the men's final. I'm sure that's what used to happen?
