I'm really enjoying it so far, have been looking forward to it

3kidsareenough · 01/06/2021 21:32

Yes. Really liking it so far. Quiet happy with Cromwell (so far!) Mark Rylance will always be my only Cromwell. Is it weekly episodes?

3kidsareenough · 01/06/2021 21:33

And agree Jodie Turner Smith is fab as Anne 🤗

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 01/06/2021 21:35

I will admit I am surprised at how much I am enjoying it-

Cromwell such a slimey toad-very well cast although I know what you mean @3kidsareenough

Production values high-loving the costumes

I don’t like it.
Some elements are just too jarring, why is no one around when they are eating and walking and such. Surely there would have been grooms of the bedchamber, ladies in waiting, kings companions, servers etc around.
Why’s she strangling him?
Why is she kissing Jane Seymour.
Why is Jane Seymour a child?

I like the actress as Anne though, she carries herself as I imagine Anne would.

TheWitchCirce · 01/06/2021 21:45

She's magnificent!

WineGetsMeThroughIt · 01/06/2021 21:48

What network is it on? Would love to watch this!

SchadenfreudePersonified · 01/06/2021 21:50

It's awful - historically inaccurate (and not just because Anne is black), dreadful dialogue, and worst of all, boring. I'll watch to see if it kicks up, but if it doesn't I won't watch any more. Life is too short for bad telly.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 01/06/2021 21:51

I'm watching on 5HD, Wine.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 01/06/2021 21:51

*picks up, not kicks up, though that would do if it injects a bit of excitement

MaMaLa321 · 01/06/2021 21:52

what a load of rubbish. Setting aside the race issue, the costumes and settings look cheap and tacky, and, as a poster said above, where are the servants? The writer seems to think that AB wandered around alone, or she and Henry ate unattended, which would never have happened.
Stupid, and not even much fun.

Rillington · 01/06/2021 23:36

We have up after 20 minutes. It was awful.

Rillington · 01/06/2021 23:36

Gave up not have up

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 02/06/2021 00:25

Shockingly bad.

But I’ll give them their dues for shoehorning in a lesbian kiss and sex scenes. And for spending an unnecessarily long time filming from between Anne’s legs.

They have made Anne extremely unlikeable. Which is a shame as I will be cheering on the Accusers when they decide her fate. For the first time.

The horse scene was extremely unnecessary. And to repeat it in the dream sequence?

The absolute worst telling of her story that I’ve ever seen.

3kidsareenough · 02/06/2021 06:32

I liked it Grinwill watch again tonight Wink

Whinginadeville · 02/06/2021 07:45

Awful just awful can't believe anyone is serious about this being brilliant Confused. Waste of a fabulous actress really hope she can lose this from her cv.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 02/06/2021 08:02

Dreadful re-telling of the story - really, really bad.

Waste of a decent cast.

Agreeing with Sheldon here. I've always had a soft spot for Anne Boleyn. Pursued by a selfish, dangerous despot who used his power to (effectively) force her into a relationship; she had wanted to marry Henry Percy, but their families - and the King and Wolsley - stopped that. She did very well to hold out for marriage. Then when she couldn't provide the son he wanted, and he had got bored of life with a woman who argued back to him, he had"evidence" fabricated to get rid of her.

She probably wasn't a very nice person in some ways, but she had had to fight her own family (who had prostituted out her sister to the king) and stand up for herself in a court which hated her and tried to undermine her at every step - so much can be done with this story.

And they've made it boring, and turned Anne into a very unpleasant person that you can't wait to see get decapitated. Very disappointing.

I do like your take on the character of AB! She is one of my favourite historical characters of all time. I've not seen this series yet but I note it has had mixed reviews.
amusedtodeath1 · 02/06/2021 08:54

It doesn't work for me tbh, the actress being black was weird for a minute or so, but she's such a great actress it didn't take long for me to forget about that.

What jars is everything else. The house they're filming in is too small for a palace, the dialogue is really bad. The lesbian kiss? WTF? The Dresses are particularly bad, one piece dresses didn't exist at the time. It jumps straight in to the end of the story without any sort of introduction. Which one's Cromwell, and why does Henry come across like the manager of a high street store rather than the despot he was. The S&M stuff (choking, etc.) was so weird.

I just don't get what they were trying to achieve tbh.

Mummy194 · 02/06/2021 09:25

@Ivebeeninlockdowntoolong

People who don't like that AB is black will come up with all sorts of excuses. I suggest you watch it yourself.

I have never known AB to be portrayed as a likeable character, mostly because even in other retellings, she is the hussy who stole Henry from Catharine. Because initially Henry was so inthralled with her, the writers in all shows allude to her sexuality - withholding before marriage etc. 🤷‍♀️

The actress was good in The Tudors, but played her as scamming. Scarlet J was a paranoid AB. Never heard these complaints before.

KillingMeDeftly · 02/06/2021 09:44

I found it really dull and plodding, and I love Tudor history. Definitely no Wolf Hall!

No excuses here. And I resent that you are insinuating that my poor opinion of it is down to the colour of the actress. You don’t know me.

It was a dreadful, sleazy and cheap looking adaptation.

Poundies Tudors if you will.

Anne has never been portrayed as the sweet perfect maid but you were always shown her vulnerabilities and the pressure she was under from all sides. More often than not from her family. I for one couldn’t help but feel for her.

But I dislike this snidey version of Anne. We have not been shown enough of a vulnerable side of her to feel any sympathy or compassion.

It wouldn’t have mattered which actress played her.

Wrong bride - but this Anne?

I like her not.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 02/06/2021 11:51

The actresses' colour has nothing to do with the dreadful scripts, awful locations and cheap and nasty looking costumes.

I wasn't in favour of a black Anne, I admit, but was excited to watch what I thought would be a well-written historical drama. Unfortunately this isn't. It isn't clear who the other characters are, and even allowing for scriptwriters' license and an updating of language this is an awful take on a period of history. Deftly described it as dull and plodding, and that is how I found it, too. It just didn't retain my interest.

As I have said - it is a waste of a good cast. Very disappointing. And I would have said that whatever colour the actors were, because it was just a dreadful script and should never have hit our screens.

Sheldon is right - we just don't care about her - there is nothing sympathetic in her character at all.

Not just people on here who are unimpressed with the programme.

Well, it's no Wolf Hall, that's for sure!

Seems very low budget, lack of extras as attendants, unembellished costumes, strange acting styles. A strangely low-key, muted Henry.

I don't like it.
