I think the jury is still out as to the precise ethnicity of Queen Charlotte's ancestors but as they were some 10-15 generations before her, I'm not sure Charlotte quite qualified for her place on the list of 100 Greatest Black Britons a few years ago!

If Queen C was mixed race then we all are

SchadenfreudePersonified · 04/06/2021 19:40

Good point Whing - I'll bet almost all of us are - especially in England - we were getting invaded right, left and centre at one tome

was of Jewish descent, not moor Jews were living in North Africa since Roman times if not earlier, there were Jewish Moors and Christian Moors living in settlements in Morocco , it’s only natural for them to relocate to Iberia with Muslims ,Christians.

I enjoyed the first episode but thought it lost pace and vigour in the remaining parts. I thought Jodie was fantastic.

I don't agree she wasn't likeable. She displayed some unpleasant behaviour when she was under enormous stress- as have many people. It doesn't make someone generally unlikeable. I thought she was strong. Perhaps that is not accurate.

Catherine of Aragon was a far stronger character than history has her down as. I would like to see more of her being portrayed.

Henry really was a piece of work. Imagine being famous for cutting off two of your wives' heads. I'm so pleased Elizabeth was thr strongest of his heirs- ultimate revenge.

Jews were also in Spain since Roman times too. Just because she is of Jewish descent, it doesn’t necessarily follow that her ancestors came with the invasion of the Moors from North Africa some 500yrs prior......

Besides, in the 14th C when she lived the term “Moor” referred to Muslims, not the Christians or Jews living in Spain under the Muslim occupation and rulers. So it is very doubtful that her ancestor could have been a “Jewish Moor” as you allege.

In addition, the Moors were vast majority white people. They were Berbers who are basically brown skinned Caucasians (white people come in different shades as do all races) same as today’s Middle Eastern Arabs. The only black Moors were those among the Mamelukes who were a race diverse slave army for the Moors before obtaining their freedom (converting to Islam was a prerequisite) and then working as freedmen.
