It's the one I remember least and I feel like I need to look for clues before next week.
Anyone fancy joining?

Rewatching here too and watched EPs 2 and 3 of series 1 tonight.

How young does Steve look, not helped by the fact he is constantly referred to as son, just to ram home how green around the gills he is 🤣

I can't work out why Hastings had the hunch that Gates is bent. It was at the awards ceremony. Surely winning officer of the year would make him draw the opposite conclusion?!

This is the first time I have rewatched a series so will be good to watch it knowing what happens in later series.

The actor who plays Dot is also doing a podcast of the current series, Obsessed with Line of Duty on BBC Sounds which was a good listen but not as good as Shrine of Duty.

MrsSiba · 21/04/2021 00:38

@GreenSlide yes, agree about the desperate sex chat. 🤮

There's when I realised I loathed Gina McKee's sex voice.

And that's not something I ever thought I'd be typing.

I believe Hastings says to Arnott that Gates’ stats are too good to be true basically - solving and convicting way more crimes than any other team. He doesn’t tell Steve about the laddering though as he wants Steve to work it out.
Buggerthebotox · 21/04/2021 08:42

God the wheedling, whining Jackie!

Gates was a great character though wasn't he? So conflicted.

I agree this series is underrated, particularly in hindsight. Lots of black humour and satire. It's clever of Jed to somehow weave the storyline and characters into the current series. I don't suppose he had any idea of how things were gojng to play out.

Reminded me a lot of Bodies with the institutiinalised incompetence, coverings up and arrogant posturing. It feels a lot more real than later series to me. I dislike Lennie James in other stuff he's done but he aced Gates imvho.

Idontlikeshouting · 21/04/2021 08:52

Love Shrine of Duty's impression of Jackie Lav -"Help me Tony" Grin

RozHuntleysStump · 21/04/2021 09:09

Watched about half of the first series.

Yes, Vicky Mclure is very attractive! Steve looks ridiculously young.
I don't think the script/acting is great in this series watching it now. Way too much chat about filling in forms and the 'civvy' Rita is dreadful.

So was Gates 'bent' all along or was he bented when he was caught between a rock and a hard place? He did know about Jackie's drug money. Interesting to see Buckles in the mix at this early stage.

This show makes me feel a bit thick tbh.

Buggerthebotox · 21/04/2021 11:41

Was Gates bent or bented?

As far as I can recall, his bentness first made an appearance when he tried to claim some expenses giving Ted and co the opportunity to bring him in. There'd been suspicion of laddering (ie manupulating crime figures) to make Gates' team look better than they actually were. This made Gates and his team very popular and cool to work for.

I'm not sure how mcuh he already knew about Jackie at first but things really escalated when he didn't turn her in for knocking over and killing her accountant. When the OCG slit Jackie's throat and the knife was placed in Gates' hands, he was doomed.

I'm not sure if they ever found the glass with the prints on though!

RozHuntleysStump · 21/04/2021 11:46

The glass with the prints on was in the office dishwasher. The cleaning lady put it in the cupboard.

Slatternforlife · 21/04/2021 11:54

Gates was laddering but not involved in organised crime until it all escalated with Jackie

Re watched the first two episodes last night, I'd forgotten just how violent it was.

Slatternforlife · 21/04/2021 12:49

I actually enjoyed series one way more on the rewatch. Tony Gates was much more complex than I remembered.
He just wanted to do the right thing at the end but was trapped and desperately trying to keep his family safe.

I’m now moving into series 2 which has always been my favourite so I’m curious to see if I enjoy it as much on the rewatch

OP posts:
wingsnthat · 21/04/2021 13:57

Yes I actually really liked tony gates too! Definitely an underrated character. His crimes weren’t as bad as the rest of the antagonists going forward, he’s barely considered bent in comparison. I think he redeemed himself

RozHuntleysStump · 21/04/2021 16:46

I’m onto series 2 now. I think the very bonny Georgia comes to a sticky end but I can’t remember how...

Slatternforlife · 21/04/2021 18:38

I liked Georgia I think she was a good fit for Steve

Ah yes the obsession with “mate” every six words I’d forgotten about that too. I actually think Kate and Steve would be good together as they get each other perfectly but don’t want to see it go down that road at the same time unless it’s done well and isn’t the main focus if that makes sense. The plot is already complicated enough!

Just finished rewatching the whole series 1, forgotten just how good it was.

TedisnotH · 23/04/2021 00:52

And I do think he only had a ons with Jackie, and then she persued him after that. And that his only wrongdoing was laddering. The expenses thing was the waitress giving him his money back, after he saved the woman and baby from the mugging outside the cafe

Blondeshavemorefun · 23/04/2021 06:17

@KittyFilter

If you have to rewatch the entire series in order to understand the latest is it because it's badly written/nonsensical or because there are such long gaps in-between series and you've forgotten what happened?
I think as long between series / started 2012

I watched all For first time aug to Oct last year

No 6 makes sense to me

Tho sometimes think oh need to check that in no 1

And yes all main characters there

Did jed plan the whole storyline over 6/7 series’s

Slatternforlife · 23/04/2021 12:49

I’ve developed a crush on Steve now after rewatching series 2 MOTHER OF GOD
what power does that little fella have over the ladies?!

@GreenSlide

I'm on ep 3 of s1 rewatch. Steve looks so young! Tony and Jackie were making me feel a bit ill with all their breathy sex chat so I'm glad she's off to the freezer.
Oh, me too. I just came on to post this - wow, her voice is SOOOO annoying. I actually made a mental note of all the female actors whose voices annoy me (and therefore I don't know how they keep getting acting jobs) while I watched this scene, to distract me from her awful voice. It was like nails on a blackboard to me. So bad that when she next appeared I turned down the sound Grin. Luckily it is a rewatch so I didn't need to hear her to keep up!!

It is so weird - I am actually more entertained than when I first watched it - I was shouting at the TV when Buckells appeared - I barely noticed him when I watched the first time. And that awful, awful child, Ryan Pilkington. Wow, he really shows that some children are just born bad. DS wandered into the room when he was on and he said "mummy, he is a very bad boy" - and I said, yes he is. Then he said - "why is he so bad" and I thought, well there is no good answer here but he gets worse (I didn't say that to DS!!).

Unfortunately, due to wandering children, I am only on episode 4 - but I would binge watch the whole series in 1 sitting if I could!!!

PhillipPhillop · 23/04/2021 14:39

I agree @Slatternforlife Steve is HOT. Maybe it's because we know him better now? The early series - is there anyone he's not sleeping with? Shock

Slatternforlife · 23/04/2021 15:31

@PhillipPhillop I know! He smiles at them and bam! I’ve never taken a shine to him before, he’s always been in the alright mate, yeah mate, see you mate, good job mate category a la Kate. But now, totally would.

Series 1 is very good I think.

Gates, Dot Cotton & Nige Morton-fabulous characters.

Also liked series 2 & 3 Keeley Hawes was great as LD who was another fabulous character.

Series 4-Roz Huntley & series 5 John Corbett-didn't rate them at all tbh.

Slatternforlife · 23/04/2021 15:55

I didn’t love the Roz Huntley series either - it didn’t feel like line of duty for some reason

I think Lyndsay Denton has been the best ax-12 foe so far she kept me guessing the whole way through
