Perhaps they want to move away from the perception that it's only white middle class women that sew?

I wonder what the actual demographic make up is like, proportionately.

I don't think clothes sewing is predominantly a white hobby at all (I mean aside from there being a greater proportion of white people in the UK), but it's definitely predominantly female.

Also, there are some young people who are extremely good at sewing, but in general there are going to be fewer of them.

Yes, if you become a wardrobe mistress or something (and I suspect they're not allowed on the show?), but if you're a 50 year old 'hobby' sewer who's been doing it for 35 years and several babies/children you'll have sewn more than somebody who's 20.

All the craft groups I go to are 100% white British, women. I do loads. Sewing, quilting, knitting and crochet, machine knitting. Obviously I’m not saying sewing bee should be all white women. Of course not! I’m just saying it doesn’t seem to reflect real life in any way and contestants, like a pp said, are supposed to have some interesting back story, or be a minority. I just would like to see more sewing. I don’t care by who just less skits and life stories and more sewing!

Definitely skewed towards Northerners this year! I counted and its 5 Northerners, 2 Midlands, 1 Scot, 1 NI and 3 based down South but that does include French Raph.

I agree with PPs point about gaining expertise with age but the best sewers in the first episode were the younger ones so definitely there on merit.

I noticed the preponderance of Northerners (as a Northerner myself) and wondered if it was anything to do with travelling restrictions resulting from COVID.

On a slightly related note, Pointless seems to have a HUGE proportion of people who are actors./ directors/ playwrites etc this at the moment, and I wondered if they were similarly restricted - they have an even greater turnover of contestants.

During ordinary times, though, I'd like ordinary people - I don't mind what race, colour or creed or sex they are, but I don't need them necessarily to have a collection of earwax or to train goldfish to jump through hoops in their bathtub.

Just good, pleasan,t craftspeople skilled in whatever field they have entered for.

Is a buffet dress one where you can wander over to spread & stash half of it under the flounces? Because I definitely need one for the next buffet BIL2 & son are at.
