FINDING ALICE ... SPOILER THREAD ONLY

Spoilers allowed here! For those of us who are binge watching this drama.

I have just finished episode three and I think this is the best drama I've seen in a long time.
I have a feeling that Alice isn't that innocent! The way the policeman looked at her during the inquest , but I'm probably wrong.
I can't wait to see episode four as I'm not sure what to expect now.
No spoilers allowed on the other thread.

I got halfway through episode one before turning it off. Nipped on here to see if anyone else was discussing it.

Utter horse shit Grin and those comparing it to After Life, one of the best shows on telly ever?

Clymene · 21/01/2021 22:00

They wouldn't give them the sperm for a DNA test and the notion that you can make someone a director of a company without their knowledge is completely ridiculous. Plus doesn't any idiot know that if you have no money and your deceased partner owns a business, you look it up on companies house and find out how much money is in the business/who else is involved.

And why on earth would she give her expensive kitchen to someone for £5k when she had sold it for £20k?

Things like this irritate me profoundly as you can see. Grin Like doctor foster, it's just stretched the bounds of credibility too far

notacooldad · 23/01/2021 09:00

We both get a few episodes last night.
Weve got two left and I really don't know if I can be bothered watching them. It's all a bit ridiculous.

Whitegrenache · 23/01/2021 09:07

Dd15 and I really enjoyed it
Alices dad was hilarious and we liked the sister too!
Yes it was a bit contrived at times but we did have some laugh out loud moments!

Agree it was a theme similar to after life but no where near as good.

But it killed a few boring lockdown boredom evenings binge watching so no complaints from us

Crookairroad · 23/01/2021 09:20

Is After Life worth a watch? I’m not keen on Ricky Gervais.

Mumdiva99 · 23/01/2021 09:28

I was disappointed with this. Especially to get to the end and find they very obviously left all the loose ends for series 2. I wanted it to finish. I won't bother watching another series it wasn't good enough. I did like the Joanna Lumley and Nigel Havers pairing.

CaptainMyCaptain · 23/01/2021 09:48

It's good but there's a lot of unnecessary swearing in it to my mind.
the80sweregreat · 23/01/2021 10:38

Afterlife is wonderful but there is a lot of swearing in it which did make me cringe a bit but Netflix is a bit more lenient with that stuff.
Season two was on when I was going through a bereavement myself , so it made me cry a lot!
I loved them all but if your not a Gervais fan I wouldn't give it a go. It is a little bit more realistic than this though.

I find Ricky Gervais like nails down a blackboard usually but After Life is very good, the second series not so much. It's feels like a very real portrayal of the utter despair and hopelessness you'd feel after the death of your much loved spouse.

Finding Alice however is just shit. Clearly written by someone who has both never been bereaved and also has no idea about women, it just played into every trope about female incompetence. Actually I've just seen it was written by the guy who created that misogynistic shitheap that was Men Behaving Badly, so no surprise there.

I'm only starting Ep 4 but it's ridiculous. The completely self indulgent burial arrangements, the self obsession, the desire to keep the (vile) house which makes no sense at all - the grubbing around for money, why doesn't she have a job or income of her own? Or know anything about her husband's business? It's just so unrealistic.

The only thing that's good about it is Nigel Havers and Joanna Lumley!

Grenlei · 23/01/2021 11:04

I'm only still watching it because I have this thing about once I start something I have to finish, however bad.

Plus there's always the hope it might get better....

Frequentflier · 23/01/2021 11:05

I like the American serial Dead to Me, which has a similar plot to this. Also v unrealistic, but the main character Jen-Christina Applegate- is at least not so useless and poor at making decisions as Alice.

I didn't like The Office at all, and would have said I didn't like Ricky Gervais stuff.

Afterlife was fantastic. A lot of it resonated with me as my DH had died in the previous few years, but it was so good.
My then 13yo caught part of an episode and watched it all and really enjoyed it.

Chasingsquirrels · 23/01/2021 11:14

We watched the 1st episode live, streamed the 2nd straight after, 3 & 4 in the week when DP was over and 5 & 6 last night.
I found it enjoyable and amusing, but so many inconsistencies and incorrect information throughout it. Had to suspend belief.
The last 2 episodes just got sillier and sillier.
Hated the ending, obviously left open for a 2nd series.
Would much rather have a single series done well and concluded, then another completed separate series.

Another post death of a spouse series I enjoyed, again since DH died, was Mum.

Mooserp · 23/01/2021 11:15

It is nothing like After Life - other than the main character has lost their partner.

I'm not quite sure why I watched it all, I couldn't believe how bad it was. What a waste of good actors.

I know people grieve in different ways, but no one really seemed that upset or shocked.

And how was she able to wander into the morgue whenever she felt like it? Where there was just one bloke singlehandedly doing everything.

Grenlei · 23/01/2021 11:20

@Chasingsquirrels agree that Mum was a great series, Lesley Manville was fantastic in it.

the80sweregreat · 23/01/2021 12:04

'Mum ' was a real gem. It's a shame it didn't get the recognition it deserved.
Lesley Manville showed grief for her husband in an entirely different more poised way and it was certainly less hysterical than any of Alice's antics.
I didn't hate finding Alice I thought it wasnt that bad , but other dramas have dealt with these things so much better. It was obvious that Ricky Gervais had done his homework on the subject or knew someone in real life who had gone through it , plus how it happens to him is different too.
Showing any drama about death is going to be controversial just now anyway :(

AnyFucker · 23/01/2021 13:28

Load of ole shit

lazymum99 · 23/01/2021 15:31

Mum was brilliant. Finding Alice was nothing like it. More like a British version of Dead to Me.
Nigel Havers and Joanna Lumley were brilliant. I think they should have a spin off show of their own!
I was searching my planner for the next episode. I had no idea it had finished
There were some very good lines in it tho

ArsenicNLace · 23/01/2021 16:50

And why on earth would she give her expensive kitchen to someone for £5k when she had sold it for £20k?

She didn't sell it for £5000. That was just the down payment. In episode 6 she goes to get the balance.

I only watched it because I couldn't really see where it was going and frankly by the end still didn't (and by then didn't care). It's like the whole of the 1st series was to set the scene for the 2nd series which I won't be watching. It was pretty dull and unrealistic.

TheRealLadyWhistledown · 23/01/2021 18:48

I’m another who had to check I was actually finished! The way the business partner lady said ‘well tell her when it’s useful’ or similar but we don’t know what that is? Confused

Illberidingshotgun · 23/01/2021 18:51

I just finished watching this and felt quite let down. There was something wrong with it from the start, it didn't feel realistic at all, and I couldn't get past her calling Harry "Harry" when talking to her daughter. She'd say "your dad" surely?

goteam · 23/01/2021 18:58

I watched this and kind of enjoyed it but as others had mentioned, it was quite unrealistic. I don't understand why Alice didn't have friends of her own and kept going back to the mortuary guy for support and advice. It's a new house but seemingly her home town. Also like others have said why would she know so little about her partner's business, especially as she didnt seem to have a job of her own.

the80sweregreat · 23/01/2021 19:04

If I was Harry's wife I would have gone to see the house he was building us all and insist on a blooming bannister!
They could have had him falling down the stairs with a bannister in place still , it wouldn't have made much difference to the actual plot really.
She was so vague about everything!

Oh dear, it seems only me who thinks it's rubbish. The lead actress is not good IMO. I think she's really horrible to everyone except her daughter too. She's been really horrible to her in laws who have just lost their son.
