Is going too OTT on the woo and melodrama for my tastes.

OP posts:

Quite enjoying this. Loved the book and the P&P film.
My favourite Rumer Godden book is Five for Sorrow, Ten for Joy.

My vertigo rages when they go up that bell tower, though. That sheer drop, CGI or not 😫 Good grief!

It's horrible!

I feel like I'm being sucked over the edge into the void!

purpleme12 · 29/12/2020 15:51

I was quite interested to see where it was going after episode one.
But just can't be bothered after last night's episode
I ended up feeling like what's the point of this really

Honeyroar · 29/12/2020 20:49

I know, I really hope tonight livens up and there’s a bit of story.

Boredsillyathome · 29/12/2020 21:51

When is it set, is it after WW1? It is slow but love all the atmosphere and Mr Dean!

Honeyroar · 29/12/2020 21:54

It’s surely not going to finish at 10?

OVienna · 29/12/2020 21:54

1914

OVienna · 29/12/2020 21:59

That was to Boredsilly

TreacleHart · 29/12/2020 22:03

3 episodes to tell the story. Nothing much happened !

SetPhasersTaeMalkie · 29/12/2020 22:09

I really enjoyed it. I remember watching the original film with Deborah Kerr and being absolutely terrified. This was a bit more of a slow burn but I was engrossed.

Twigletgirl27 · 29/12/2020 22:12

This has been the best thing on tv all Christmas. When sister clodagh leant forward to Mr Dean and said "Catherine, my name is Catherine" the floodgates opened. I found those few words incredibly moving.

Nuie · 29/12/2020 22:13

Loved it. Fantastic story and excellent acting. Well done BBC.

Honeyroar · 29/12/2020 22:14

I thought it was really disappointing. They could’ve done so much more with it. I feel like I’ve wasted three nights watching that.

woodhill · 29/12/2020 22:14

Shame the Prince didn't get caned, awful double standards, he pursued the girl

SaintGutFree · 29/12/2020 22:18

I burst into tears! I thought it was absolutely beautiful- it touched me in a way the film didn't.
Brownbananabandana · 29/12/2020 22:19

Utter horsehit, the original film is so much better. This version felt like it was directed by an amateur, really clunky, one dimensional with no actual intrigue.

Twigletgirl27 · 29/12/2020 22:21

@SaintGutFree I haven't seen the film but want to now. I can't explain why I sobbed except that Clodagh clearly would have loved to stay with Mr Dean but couldn't. But she opened up to him in a way she couldn't to anyone else. Beautiful and moving x

Maireas · 29/12/2020 22:23

@Boredsillyathome - it's set in 1934, twenty years after the young woman's suicide.

Rayn · 29/12/2020 22:25

It reminded me of a passage to India. How the spirituality of a place can determine events.

Boredsillyathome · 29/12/2020 22:26

@Maireas ah thank you

colouringindoors · 29/12/2020 22:26

Really enjoyed that! Very atmospheric, good mix of characters and complex relationship between Sr Clodagh and Mr Dean.

colouringindoors · 29/12/2020 22:28

twigletgirl yes! very powerful.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 29/12/2020 22:32

I enjoyed it.

It wasn't anywhere near as good as the film - the film was chilling regarding Sister Ruth's madness as I recall, but it was still excellent and I'm glad i watched it. It would have been better as a single 90 minute drama, though.

AllAboutHallowsEve · 29/12/2020 22:34

I found myself unexpectedly crying at the end. I think it was because Sister Clodagh sharing her real name with Mr Dean was the most intimate thing that could happen between them. And the actress who played Sister Ruth was brilliant. She was previously in The Fall playing an evil teenager who tries to seduce the killer. She plays sweet faced cruelty really well.

colouringindoors · 29/12/2020 22:41

oh yes! that's where she's from!
