Drag is very fashionable now though.

FuzzyPuffling · 05/12/2020 08:24

I really hate drag. I object to it very strongly indeed ( I'm in the "womanface" camp. When the drag bit is on I shall take the opportunity to go to the loo.

billysboy · 05/12/2020 08:24

You can still get 3 / 1 on HRVY whilst Bill is the Bookies favourite

Maireas · 05/12/2020 08:27

Fuzzy I agree. It's an exaggerated pastiche of femininity as entertainment. Woman face indeed. By the end of this, they'll have had most of the male pros and some celebs in drag.

FuzzyPuffling · 05/12/2020 08:31

I genuinely don't see how drag is seen as socially acceptable and indeed fashionable. I wish strictly had kept well away. It's not big and it's not clever.

ppeatfruit · 05/12/2020 08:41

Yes 'tis true Maireas I'm conflicted about it tbh I don't much mind the trad. panto dame stuff. As long as it's not too blue. But I find the OTT really blue and often mysogonist (sp?) modern stuff (a la the latest show from USA) too much. She may be traditionalish but I HATE Mrs Brown's Boys.

Just because it's fashionable doesn't make it pleasant, look at the bodycon dresses and terrifyingly high stilettoes !! Those poor women will have bad backs when the hit their late 30s or earlier!!

Maireas · 05/12/2020 08:52

Because if you're a woman you have to teeter and wobble and your movements must be restricted. Those shoes are the equivalent of foot binding.

ppeatfruit · 05/12/2020 08:58

Well yes to an extent but at least there's an option here. Trainers are flat!!! Witness the pain some of the contestants suffer from wearing middle height heels to dance in!!

This isn't ancient China, where even the men grew their fingernails so long they couldn't lift anything only the Royals though , it showed they didn't have to DO anything .Blimey.

Comefromaway · 05/12/2020 09:09

Which song are they doing from Priscilla? I love the show, it’s great fun, seen it three times on stage now.

Maireas · 05/12/2020 09:09

True. I saw an article this morning about Shirley Ballas and how she had to starve herself to be a size 6 when Darcy Bussell was a fellow judge. I thought it was very sad. She's a woman of 60, not a teenager.

ppeatfruit · 05/12/2020 09:18

Shirley has low self esteem, she said it herself, in an interview about the removal of breast implants that she had done (due to danger from the medics not being able to see under them when giving mammograms). So a cancer risk.

Almost everyone does have a low self esteem though.

ppeatfruit · 05/12/2020 09:20

Priscilla is quite fun, it shows both sides of drag. Terry Stamp is brilliant in it.

Bluffinwithmymuffin · 05/12/2020 12:51

Not sure what to think of the whole drag thing, so very interested to read your comments. I always assumed it was a sort of celebration of the female form by men who get a kick out of dressing up and envy the fact that, traditionally, women are at liberty to wear heels etc without anyone batting an eyelid - but I could be completely wrong about that.

I agree with ppeatfruit that most of us have issues with the way we’re made one way or another, but I doubt silly Shirley suffers particularly from low self esteem, other than when she’s being interviewed for some lightweight newspaper article. I also doubt she had to starve herself to be a size 6; she’s a small/medium build, been a dancer all her life (super slim and fit in any case) plus today’s size 6 is the 80s size 10, which is what Shirley would be naturally tbh.

Maireas · 05/12/2020 12:53

Well, she said she practically ate nothing.

ppeatfruit · 05/12/2020 13:15

Bluffin No not a newspaper (I don't read the lightweights anyway) it was on telly The One Show I think or it could've been on ITT. Why would anyone say they had low self esteem if they didn't?

She's a teacher, if she still dances for the odd competition, her weight could yo yo. Dancers are known for it. (she'd know how to do it!) Maireas

Ref. drag I like Grayson Perry he doesn't do it disrespectfully Like Eddie Izzard it 's some sort of genetic thing I suppose.

Bluffinwithmymuffin · 05/12/2020 13:24

I’m not saying Shirley’s pretending to have low self esteem exactly, just that there’s a fine line sometimes between genuine crippling insecurity and being overly preoccupied with your looks, and if I had to hazard a guess I’d put Shirley in the second category.

Maireas · 05/12/2020 13:33

ppeatfruit yes, Grayson Perry dresses that way in his female alter ego.

ppeatfruit · 05/12/2020 13:36

True, but sometimes the over confidence that her and Motsi display can often hide those insecurities. They both seem to be 'driven' highly motivated people who 'wear' their loudness (or think that's what people want) Bruno is a similar type. Craig has much more real confidence.

Redcrayons · 05/12/2020 13:44

Marking my place Glitterball

That’s a bit harsh to Shirley, She was coming in as a newbie and having to stand next to tall, gorgeous Darcey. Who wouldn’t feel intimidated?

Shirley always looks so amazing, I’m 10 years younger, and wish I looked half as good.

Maireas · 05/12/2020 13:51

She does look fabulous. Always glamorous, but not over the top. Standing next to Darcy must have been tricky! It's a shame that she needed to starve herself, she's a capable and successful woman.

ppeatfruit · 05/12/2020 13:56

Start saving RedCrayons !! Botox and fillers are expensive!! I'm not sure about the 'princess' dresses she's been wearing recently Maireas

Maireas · 05/12/2020 13:58

Yes, I prefer something more elegant and structured.

TheLadyOfShallnott · 05/12/2020 13:58

Our Shirl would have been straight on the pies if she’d been sitting next to me.

It would have been like sitting a chopstick next to a redwood. other trees are available

Maireas · 05/12/2020 14:00

😂 😂 😂 😂

The only drag artist I've ever liked was Danny la Rue* (and he described himself as a female impersonator). I never got the impression that he was Misogynistic, or that he caricatured women the way I do with most of the ones you see.
