Previous thread

I'm not sure 9 pages will last us, so I'm getting prepared a bit early! Check the last thread first before posting here — we might still be over there.

Shirley loved Caroline, so she must have seen something I didn't. There was a distinct lack of engagement and enthusiasm at times. I suppose she could just have been tired and fed up. Maybe she was glad to end the experience.

lynsey91 · 23/11/2020 10:52

I find Maisie a bit boring to watch to be honest. As others have said she just doesn't seem to have the joy that others have.

Doesn't help that I either have known a couple of her songs. Also the fact that she could dance from day 1. I want to see celebs learn to dance not be able to dance already.

I could not agree more about wondering how Shirley got the job. I did like her the first year but now she is just an embarrassment. Mind you I still think she is better than Motsi because at least she says some sensible things and gives constructive criticism. Motsi just makes loads of noise and speaks rubbish.

Craig is definitely the best judge although I do think he sometimes marks too low. Anton was also good and, like Craig, didn't feel the need to shout and leap around.

I would like to see Anton as a judge permanently next year either as a replacement for Motsi or for Bruno although I do quite like Bruno.

Why can't they have a female judge who can talk sense, not shout, not be bitchy and not leer over the young men?

DigOutThoseLemonHandWipes · 23/11/2020 11:20

I thought she saw the opportunity to point out that they are of a similar age, presumably because she thinks the comparison would flatter her? I can't think why else she need to refer to the age of any female contestant over 50 AND her own age every single time. To me in her head she continued but I'm soooooo much slimmer/younger looking.

CharityDingle · 23/11/2020 11:21

Motsi just makes loads of noise and speaks rubbish.

I'm a relatively recent viewer of Strictly, but this was my impression of Motsi from the beginning. When I first started watching, I used to be completely confused as she poured out lots of words of praise, then marked a contestant with a five or something.

Right result I felt. Quite glad to see the back of CQ. Something about her whole manner just irked me. She also wasn’t relaxed and joyful about being part of strictly. I felt she was highly strung and thought she’d do better than she did. First episode I thought she was disappointed by her score (and surprised) and this week i felt she expected a 9 at least and was again surprised by the 8s. She says the “right” things in interviews (just glad to be dancing etc etc) but it doesn’t seem genuine. ITT will be interesting tonight.

Masie I did feel really sorry for her - she looked totally crushed to be in DO again and I agree Gorka was lovely doing all the talking as I think Maisie would have cried if she’d had to say too much. She is only 19 and to realise that you aren’t “popular” at that age when popularity matters to you so l in much better hard to deal with. I thought Craig’s words were lovely and he was trying support and offer her encouragement. I don’t think it’s entirely due to the ringerness of her (I don’t think she’s up there with the best of the best ringers) I think it’s more what others have said that her personality isn’t coming across as fun and young but a little too competitive and trying to act cool. I hope she stays in a while longer but can’t see her being in the final.

Clara I was delighted she made it though. Think a lot of people must have felt she was given raw deal with theming and gave her enough votes which is great. Hope she gets w good dance and theme next week.

For those saying JJ will get the Scottish vote next week .... not this one he won’t!!! Can’t stand the bloody kilt and it’s going to be all about his Scottish roots Hmm cynical ploys. What dance needs a kilt anyway?!? Amy is so “on” all the time - whoever said that upthread thank you because I’ve been trying to pin down what irritates me about her and I think you’ve hit the nail on the head for me. The other professionals you see them relaxed smiles genuine laughs personality. With Amy is performance and fake seeming so much. Sickly sweet trying to always say the right thing. Sorry I’m sure she’s a lovely person but I can’t take to her.

the80sweregreat · 23/11/2020 11:53

Craig and Bruno have both made comments about some of the men on the show too! As much as I like Craig , he can be as bad as the women are with the men sometimes.

iklboogeymum · 23/11/2020 11:53

I'm sure Maisie's lovely and lots of her 'cockiness' is a front. She's been in the public eye since she was 7 and maybe thinks she always has to be 'on' or like her character (I don't watch EE so I'm not sure). Having said that, she does seem to go through the motions of her dances and not 'feel' them, if that makes sense?

SoupDragon · 23/11/2020 12:20

He doesn't drool and fan himself and go really OTT. Even Bruno is "restrained" in that respect I think. Shirley is positively lecherous (it would be unacceptable from a male judge too!).
SchadenfreudePersonified · 23/11/2020 12:27

@ImAncient

Gosh that sounds harsh but I’ll clarify. She’s not very nice to some of the females & always seems to single one out.
The truth is rarely sugar-coated,.

She is a bitch. Evidence that women can be just as misogynistic as men if they put their minds to it.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 23/11/2020 12:38

@ppeatfruit

Ok marking my place. I can't spend the whole morning reading this ,and the last thread fgs. So forgive me if anyone else noticed that Caroline DELIBERATELY underdanced the dance off, She knew it was over so she gave up.

Twas the correct result!!!!!!!!!!

I can't say I noticed any under dancing, but I definitely thought that she looked relieved to be out of it.

It's a lot of hard work, and if you are sensitive to criticism (and most people are - especially in the public eye) then reading what was said about her - true or false - must have been awful.

When it started I had high hopes for her - I thought she'd be great fun.

She wasn't.

NVWLS and Maisie I didn't like - I thought he was an idiot and she was a cockymare who thought herself above it all.

He has really proven me wrong - I've been very impressed with how he's come on.

Maisie , I now think, is just someone who has always been good at what she does, has been praised to the skies for it and told how marvellous she is, and is now hitting a wall of criticism that she's never been inoculated against. She looked stricken, and it reminded me how very young and vulnerable she is - and yes, I know that there are women who had three kids by the time they were 19 etc - but she's still not that much more than a child. I felt very sorry for her, especially if her apparent contempt was (as Ringo Starr used to say) "just her face". I suspect she has been "levied" so much that she hasn't had much (critical) contact with the non-stage world. This might do her good in many ways to reflect on how she can come across - but it's also a very hard and hurtful lesson. I truly felt sorry for her - she's getting a vote from me next week.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 23/11/2020 12:39

A strip the willow? Grin I could go for a ceilidh-based couple's choice, now there seem to be no rules at all about it.

*luvvied, not levied

Bad Autocarrot! Bad, bad technology!

CaveMum · 23/11/2020 13:00

@ScienceSensibility I dint know about the interviews for Head Judge this time round but I do know that Lorna Lee auditioned when the show was first launched, and Len got the job. She was considered too harsh!

She did that show on Channel 5 where they tried to teach “naughty” teens to dance www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-5461329/How-wayward-teens-learnt-respect-hands-ballroom-teachers.html

I think I mentioned a Highland Fling upthread? hoicks bosoms in a "you all ignored my wisdom" sort of a way

SunshineCake · 23/11/2020 13:55

Maybe people don't like Maisie as she doesn't come across as genuine and had a penchant for stupid cigarette looking drugs.

ScienceSensibility · 23/11/2020 14:23

That’s interesting CaveMum. I didn’t know that, thank you.👍🏻

Samcro · 23/11/2020 14:48

why is Maisie vulnerable?
she is an adult.

iklboogeymum · 23/11/2020 15:07

Apparently while driving - according to the press.

Elderflower14 · 23/11/2020 15:28

Apologies for the Sun link... Maisie and "Spliff"!!

the80sweregreat · 23/11/2020 15:49

Oh dear! That's not good ; I wonder if she'll be allowed to continue on the show?

DigOutThoseLemonHandWipes · 23/11/2020 16:06

The80s the article is from the summer so I can't see it being an issue now.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 23/11/2020 16:20
Ooooh!

Take all my "not much more than a child" and "vulnerability" comments back.

SHE WILL NEVER GET MY VOTE NOW!

NEVVAH!!!!!

SparklingDinosaurs · 23/11/2020 16:28

Oh that’s so disappointing - silly girl. Drug driving is a massive no no for me (and most people I’d imagine!) so she’ll never get my vote now. I hadn’t heard that before but wonder if others were more aware prior to strictly and that’s influenced the votes too. I was beginning to warm to her slightly too after seeing her looking gutted at the red light going over here but no sympathy now.

SparklingDinosaurs · 23/11/2020 16:29

Also even if she wasn’t smoking drugs the car shot might have put me off her anyway with all that pink steering wheel cover and other accessories Confused

BillBaileysPasoFace · 23/11/2020 16:38

The Highland Fling isn’t really a ceilidh dance, though, and it’s done solo.

( adjusts swords on the kitchen floor in advance of tonight’s Highland dance class via zoom)
