Previous thread

I'm not sure 9 pages will last us, so I'm getting prepared a bit early! Check the last thread first before posting here — we might still be over there.

She thought she would win

Lolol... there is no way she thought she was going to win 😂😂

EvilRingahBitch · 22/11/2020 21:12

I seem to remember Esther Rantzen doing a toe curling “sexy older woman” routine.

The thing about “thinking Maisie was safe” was that of course she was safe. We all knew that if Clara hit that dance-off she was a gonner, but the voting permutations required to send Maisie home were theoretically possible but ludicrously unlikely in practice.

People talk a lot about the Eastenders vote, but I don’t believe in it. I’ve literally never seen an Eastenders actor being kept in by the Strictly viewers beyond what their dancing or entertainment factor would lead you to expect.

Skipsurvey · 22/11/2020 21:15

didnt kara tointon hale from EE?

Skipsurvey · 22/11/2020 21:15

although @EvilRingahBitch, i guess she had dancing ability?

ThursdayLastWeek · 22/11/2020 21:17

@Skipsurvey

didnt kara tointon hale from EE?
Yes but she fell over the first week and didn’t seem to believe in herself at all. Which is what you have to do to cover up the fact you’re any good if you want people to like you Wink
ScienceSensibility · 22/11/2020 21:17

I read a magazine article/interview with Shirley this week.

She was contacted to audition for Strictly, along with many others, apparently. Did an awful first audition but was called back for ‘another go’.
Then didn’t hear anything for many weeks, before the job offer came.

I would really like to know

  1. Who else auditioned for the job?
  1. Who was offered the job and turned it down? Given the lonnnng gap before Shirley got the phone call.
  1. On what basis she was selected above the others? They would ALL have had the requisite dance knowledge/experience to even get the phone call. So that means the producers chose her, for what?

Now, given the BBC getting into all sorts of trouble ref diversity, it probably had to be a woman, and given the hoo haa at the time about age discrimination, their preference might have been for an older woman.

BUT there it stops for me. Yes, she looks ok on TV, but I bet the other female candidates did too, given dancers or ex dancers tend to keep in shape.

So, why not Karen Hardie? Or Erin Boag? Or Natalie Lowe. Or Lilia Kopylova?
All popular with the Strictly fan base, and Lilia even has judging experience on one of the Strictly spin offs.

The gig is high profile, highly paid and yet Shirley is making an absolute pigs ear of it. Is there no performance appraisal? Was it an open ended contract?
Giving her Head Judge as well, an abomination.
It’s taken three series of her for me to reach this view. How much longer do we have to endure her?

PS ref Anton
I though he wouldn’t get the job because he is a white, middle aged, Male. If they were that concerned about the Laila Rouass episode then surely he would have been stood down as a dancer? Motsi has no where near the credibility with a British audience that Anton does, and her judging critiques are hysterical.

Maybe in Craig’s next book he will reveal more?😀

augustusglupe · 22/11/2020 21:19

I voted for Maisie, Bill and BVB.
I find Johannes a bit odd too, I never got the appeal. Shame they can't bring Graziano back as a main dancer..or Greasy as DH calls him.

jambeforeclottedcream · 22/11/2020 21:19

@Skipsurvey

didnt kara tointon hale from EE?
Yep she did
SequinsandStiIettos · 22/11/2020 21:29

Aw Gregg's wasn't quite as bad as I remember but Aliona did spend half the routine on the other side of the floor Grin

SchadenfreudePersonified · 22/11/2020 21:31

@GarethSouthgatesWaistcoat

Sorry for your orchid-woe Schaden!

Thank you.

SequinsandStiIettos · 22/11/2020 21:36

Esther went out on a tango wk 3. The garter was unnecessary.
Have not found her rumba yet though (Vorderumba saved her!)

Florabritannica · 22/11/2020 21:41

That garter is truly terrifying.

randomsabreuse · 22/11/2020 21:41

I'll probably vote for Maisie next week. I liked her dance but there's a tactical part that figures she's likely to survive the dance off so it doesn't matter, while those lower down the leaderboard won't survive the dance off against a judge's favourite (CQ for instance...).

Until the end it's more a case of voting for those I want to see get further that might be at risk - the final is the only place I'd actually vote without considering "tactics". That said I'm not sure there's much more tactical voting required this year- I'd not be particularly upset if any of the remaining contestants win, except possibly JJ as he's starting to lag technically.

Clara did not deserve to have to dance that routine let alone go out on it but suspect she's in trouble if she gets a decent theme and messes it up next week.

Facelikearustytractor · 22/11/2020 21:43

@ThursdayLastWeek

I voted for Maisie because I don’t understand why people dont like confident young women
Same here. You get good dancers who act grateful for their points and it gets voters backs up, but when you get someone who loves dancing and has a bit of confidence (although I think it's just excitement we are seeing rather than "look at me I'm brilliant') people are pissed off by that too.

I hope she makes it to the final. I want a great final with good dancing, not a popularity contest. I hope Bill stays though, even though I didn't think this week was particularly great. I think he has been lucky with the dances given, same with JJ, who has had hardly any latin. Has he even had a salsa, samba or a Cha Cha yet? I can only remember him in ballroom and the jive.

Redcrayons · 22/11/2020 21:45

Kara played a blinder
She was good, but not too good. Had a couple of duff weeks, and then got really good. Plus she had Artem 😍 at her. And she was really sweet and likeable.

Kelle bright probably did the best out of the EE lot, I think (except Kara, obvs).

SequinsandStiIettos · 22/11/2020 21:45

Bless her, Carol looked bloody amazing in the frock though

the80sweregreat · 22/11/2020 21:48

Kellie Bright doing Oliver ! Was good.,

SchadenfreudePersonified · 22/11/2020 21:49

Sorry to hear about your orchid, Schaden. Daffodil

Thank you Maireas

Gregg was creepy with Aliona.

Gregggg is creepy full stop,

The only clearcut case of a pro loathing their celeb, IMO, was Aliona with Gregg Wallace, and I couldn't blame her for that.

People line up to loathe Gregggggg, so it would have been surprising if Aliona hadn't

I feel sorry for Maisie, she must be gutted knowing the public don't like her. I think there is a lot of sexism where a young man can get away with things a young woman can't.

I agree - rightly or wrongly, a lot of young men get away with cockiness where a young woman can't. I don't like that sort of arrogance in either sex, myself.

Schady I am so sorry about your orchid. But if you put in in a frock and bung it on strictly next year, it will get a massive sympathy vote

That is BRILLIANT, Fuzzy my little puffling

I don't suppose you've got any sequins going spare?

I hope she makes it to the final. I want a great final with good dancing, not a popularity contest.

Agree Tractor

Florabritannica · 22/11/2020 21:54

I’m quite puritanical about ringers, so my dream final is Bill, Clara, Ranvir.

ShirleyPhallus · 22/11/2020 21:57

@Redcrayons

I’ve never forgiven them for breaking up tbh
Maireas · 22/11/2020 22:05

Which makes me think... No Strictly relationships this year??

jambeforeclottedcream · 22/11/2020 22:12

Kara & Artem were awesome together

SunshineCake · 22/11/2020 22:15

@jambeforeclottedcream

Shirley is not happy
What happened please ?
iklboogeymum · 22/11/2020 22:15

Bloody hell we go through these threads quickly.

jambeforeclottedcream · 22/11/2020 22:16

SunshineCake
I got the vibe that she'd save Maisie in the DO through gritted teeth.
